There are many infectious causes of fatigue, sore throat, and fever, including mononucleosis and toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasma antibody testing is rarely performed in most emergency departments; as a result, toxoplasmosis is diagnosed infrequently. We obtained Toxoplasma IgG IFA titers on ED patients who had mononucleosis testing performed to determine the frequency of toxoplasmosis in this population.

We studied the fluorescence properties of a single tyrosine (Tyr94) located in the C-terminal tail of transcription factor 1 (TF1), a type II procaryotic DNA binding protein encoded by the Bacillus subtilis phage SPO1. The time-resolved fluorescence intensity of Tyr94 in free TF1 dimers decays as a single exponential, and this is consistent with a twofold symmetrical structure. The fluorescence is readily quenched by acrylamide, but it is less accessible to anionic quenchers (iodide and citrate), suggesting that the tyrosine is located on the protein surface in a negatively charged environment provided by neighboring Glu95 and Asp96 residues.

TF1 is special in this family of procaryotic chromatin-forming proteins in its preference for hydroxymethyluracil-containing DNA, such as SPO1 DNA, and in binding with high affinity to specific sites in the SPO1 chromosome. We constructed recessive null alleles of the TF1 gene and introduced them into SPO1 chromosomes.

A review of 606 of these patients with blunt trauma was performed for the period from 1983 through 1986. When the group was evaluated there were 451 patients in the ISS cohort of 20-29 and 155 in the 30-39 group.

We present a case of a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta but without any history of trauma or chronic anticoagulation in whom a subdural hematoma occurred during hemodialysis. Despite operative intervention, the patient died.

One group of patients (Group A) received application of a bland ointment to the dorsum of the hand prior to attempts at cannulation, while the other group (Group B) received application of 2% nitroglycerin ointment to the dorsum of the hand prior to cannulation attempts. Cannulation was achieved in all 34 patients in the study, but required significantly fewer attempts in Group B patients (P = .

We reviewed the literature to determine a rational basis for the management of the varicella-zoster virus-exposed hospital employee.

In this report we describe methods that will be of general use in the isolation and characterization of proteins and the benefits of substituting boric acid for glycine in the electrophoresis tray buffers. We also describe how proteins resolved in a variety of gel systems (including those containing sodium dodecyl sulfate) may be rapidly visualized with 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid and efficiently transferred to a second gel for two-dimensional gel analysis, or isolated by electroelution for subsequent characterization.
