Background: Despite prevention efforts, type 2 diabetes mellitus continues to increase in incidence among First Nations children and is associated with early and aggressive complications. We aimed to determine the experiences of adolescents living with type 2 diabetes and the barriers to living well with type 2 diabetes that adolescents perceived.

Methods: We recruited adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus from the pediatric diabetes clinic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to participate in a day-long facilitated focus group discussion.

Background: Indigenous youth with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are disproportionately affected by early onset albuminuria and are at high risk of kidney failure in early adulthood. Traditional biological approaches have failed to fully explain the renal morbidity seen in this population. The mproving renal omplications in dolescents with type 2 diabetes through search cohort (iCARE) study was therefore designed in collaboration with patients, to more holistically evaluate risk factors for renal morbidity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether the readiness for adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors was associated with mental health and comorbid conditions in youth with T2D.

Methods: A cross-sectional comparison of various measures of mental health (distress, stress, resilience) and comorbid conditions (glycated hemoglobin, adiposity, hypertension) was conducted within a cohort of indigenous youth with T2D living in Canada, stratified according to their readiness to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors based on Prochaska's transtheoretical model.

Results: Within the entire cohort (n = 162), only 14% were considered ready to adopt all healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Background: Research suggests that prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) increases the risk of insecure caregiver-child attachment and related negative child emotional-behavioural outcomes. Research also shows positive effects of attachment-focused interventions in preventing disrupted caregiver-child attachment relationships; however, such interventions have not been specifically adapted for children with FASD.

Objectives: This paper describes the implementation, challenges, and results of a community home-based attachment intervention, Circle of Security® (COS), with preschool children affected by PAE/FASD in Manitoba, Canada.

Background: Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is associated with a high burden of renal complications, culminating with end stage kidney disease in early adulthood. The establishment of relevant bioclinical determinants of albuminuria and ultimately progression of chronic kidney disease in youth is critically important to facilitate patient risk stratification and aid in the development of treatment targets and tailored prevention strategies. In response to the important gaps in knowledge, we created a prospective cohort study of youth with type 2 diabetes titled the Improving Renal Complications in Adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes through the REsearch (iCARE) Study.
