Unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with poor lung function. It is not known whether this is due to low consumption of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, or is a consequence of higher intakes of harmful dietary constituents, such as processed meat. On the basis of the high affinity of Zn(2+) to sulfur and imidazole, we targeted nucleotides such as GDP-β-S, ADP-β-S, and AP3(β-S)A, as potential biocompatible Zn(2+)-chelators. The thiophosphate moiety enhanced the stability of the Zn(2+)-nucleotide complex by about 0.7 log units.

The objectives of the current study were to describe fibromyalgia patient-spouse incongruence regarding patient pain, fatigue, and physical function; and to examine the associations of individual and interpersonal factors with patient-spouse incongruence. Two hundred four fibromyalgia patients and their coresiding partners rated the patient's symptoms and function. Multilevel modeling revealed that spouses, on average, rated patient fatigue significantly lower than patients.

This review provides a framework for the development of an operational definition of sarcopenia and of the potential end points that might be adopted in clinical trials among older adults. While the clinical relevance of sarcopenia is widely recognized, there is currently no universally accepted definition of the disorder. The development of interventions to alter the natural history of sarcopenia also requires consensus on the most appropriate end points for determining outcomes of clinical importance which might be utilized in intervention studies.

The reduced muscle mass and impaired muscle performance that define sarcopenia in older individuals are associated with increased risk of physical limitation and a variety of chronic diseases. They may also contribute to clinical frailty. Metal chelators are potential therapeutic agents for treating diseases such as Wilson's and Alzheimer's where the pathology involves an excess of metal-ions (Cu(II) and Zn(II)/Cu(II)/Fe(II/III), respectively). In addition to the high affinity of the metal-ion to the chelators, metal selectivity of the chelators is essential to achieve the therapeutic goal, that is, the successful removal of excess of harmful metal-ions in a physiological extracellular medium rich in alkali and alkali earth metal-ions. Suboptimal maternal nutrition and body composition are implicated in metabolic disease risk in adult offspring. We hypothesized that modest disruption of glucose homeostasis previously observed in young adult sheep offspring from ewes of a lower body condition score (BCS) would deteriorate with age, due to changes in skeletal muscle structure and insulin signaling mechanisms. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV(1)/FVC were not associated with bone mineral density at any site; associations with bone mineral content were removed by adjustment for body size.

A new transformation of methylene-bis(phosphonic dichloride) into tetrathiobisphosphonate derivatives is reported. The reaction of methylene-bis(phosphonic dichloride) with 1,2-ethanedithiol in bromoform in the presence of AlCl(3) formed methylene-bis(1,3,2-dithiaphospholane-2-sulfide), which gave rise to O,O'-diester-methylenediphosphonotetrathioate analogues 1a-k upon reaction with phenols and alkyl alcohols in the presence of DBU. Reaction mechanisms are proposed, and all products were characterized by (31)P, (13)C, and (1)H NMR.
