EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia in hematopoietic stem cell donor.

We herein report a case of peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) involving a donor with EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP). The apheresis product was inspected for 24 h and there was no platelet clumping or thrombocytopenia. In the first 14 months after PBSCT, there has been no transfer of PTCP symptoms.

A survey on dogs with valvular disease flying to Japan for operation.

In small-breed dogs, myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is a common disease which may lead to chronic heart failure. Mitral valve repair is an optimal surgical treatment that is currently available in limited veterinary facilities globally because it requires a special surgery team and specific devices. Therefore, some dogs must travel overseas to undergo this surgery.

Adverse effects of cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy for malignant ascites: a single-institute experience.

Background: Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) is a strategy for improving various intractable symptoms due to refractory ascites, including hypoalbuminemia. CART has recently been applied in the treatment of cancer patients. This study was performed to assess the safety of CART in a single cancer institute.

Efficacy of group-based multi-component psycho-education for caregivers of people with dementia: A randomized controlled study.

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the ability of a group-based multi-component psycho-educational intervention (GMC-PEI) to reduce depression, and improve caregiving appraisals, coping skills of informal caregivers and the condition of people with dementia.

Methods: In this randomized controlled and blinded trial, we enrolled 54 informal caregivers of people with dementia visiting the Japan National Center of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and divided them into GMC-PEI and control groups. The intervention group received a 12-week GMC-PEI program that included six 2-h structured sessions to enhance their knowledge of dementia, caregiving skills and coping skills.

[Clinical classification of fall risk using visually obtained information at a memory clinic].

Aim: There are few studies concerning the classification of fall risk by nurses without established fall risk assessment tools. In the present study, clinical classification of fall risk using visually obtained information was compared with the assessment of fall risk in order to evaluate the rationale and validity of the clinical classification of fall risk by nurses.

Methods: New patients who visited the center of comprehensive care and research for memory disorders at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology were enrolled in the present study.

Use of anthropometric indicators in screening for undiagnosed vertebral fractures: a cross-sectional analysis of the Fukui Osteoporosis Cohort (FOC) study.

Background: Vertebral fractures are the most common type of osteoporotic fracture. Although often asymptomatic, each vertebral fracture increases the risk of additional fractures. Development of a safe and simple screening method is necessary to identify individuals with asymptomatic vertebral fractures.
