Objectives: Blood transfusion is an important mode of infectious disease transmission in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study describes a model to determine the prevalence of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) and the associated burden of disease.
Methods: A five-step model was developed to determine the TTI-related burden of disease measured by disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).
A series of structural constitutional arguments lodged in multiple cases against Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) authorities to negotiate prescription drug prices via the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act threaten the legitimacy of CMS program and federal agency powers.

To improve our understanding of poor oral health care outcomes, we conducted a test of network adequacy among Medicaid pediatric dental providers in Arizona through a "secret shopper" phone survey.
Methods: This study tested multiple components of children's access to oral health care, including reliability of provider directory information, appointment availability at the practice level for children covered under Medicaid versus commercial insurance, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Purpose: People living with opioid use disorder (OUD) disproportionately encounter the criminal justice system. Although incarcerated individuals with OUD face higher risk for withdrawals, relapses and overdoses, most jails fail to offer comprehensive medications for OUD (MOUD), including recovery support services and transition of care to a community provider. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and implementation of a comprehensive MOUD program at a large county jail system in Maricopa County, Arizona.

This study reports feasibility of the same telehealth intervention in a larger set of progressive aphasia participants and explores factors potentially influencing functional intervention outcomes.
Methods: Participants with PPA or progressive aphasia in the context of a neurodegenerative dementia syndrome and their communication partners were enrolled into an 8-session intervention, with 3 evaluations (baseline, 2 months, and 6 months postenrollment).
Despite spending more on health care than any other country, the United States has the worst maternal mortality rate among all developed nations. African American and American Indian/Alaskan Native women have the worst outcomes by race, representing a stark health disparity within the country. Contributing factors disproportionately experienced by these minority populations include challenges of access to consistent and high-quality prenatal care, prevalence of underlying conditions, toxic stress due to systemic racism, and unconscious bias in health care.

In the present study, the efficacy of an erythropoietin-impregnated collagen scaffold as an alveolar ridge augmentation material versus a conventional collagen scaffold and a BioOss inorganic bovine bone xenograft was examined. The collagen/Erythropoietin (EPO) scaffold exhibited significantly more rapid and complete osseous regeneration of the alveolar defect when compared to bone xenograft and the collagen membrane alone.

Reducing these disparities warrant more innovative research approaches to better understand perspectives of Hispanic patients regarding barriers to treatment and how these perspectives compare to those of their providers. A pilot qualitative study was conducted at a major urban cancer center in Arizona that measured both patient and provider perspectives regarding barriers to treatment.

Hypernasal speech is a common symptom across several neurological disorders; however it has a variable acoustic signature, making it difficult to quantify acoustically or perceptually. In this paper, we propose the nasal cognate distinctiveness features as an objective proxy for hypernasal speech. Our method is motivated by the observation that incomplete velopharyngeal closure changes the acoustics of the resultant speech such that alveolar stops /t/ and /d/ map to the alveolar nasal /n/ and bilabial stops /b/ and /p/ map to bilabial nasal /m/.

Hypernasality is a common characteristic symptom across many motor-speech disorders. For voiced sounds, hypernasality introduces an additional resonance in the lower frequencies and, for unvoiced sounds, there is reduced articulatory precision due to air escaping through the nasal cavity. However, the acoustic manifestation of these symptoms is highly variable, making hypernasality estimation very challenging, both for human specialists and automated systems.

During some experimental trials, the latter information was available from the choices of model rats making choices together with the subject rats, because some of the model rats tended to choose the locations baited with more-preferred food. On the surface, the results suggest that social influence specified the locations of more-preferred food to the subject rats.

We sought to determine the feasibility of utilizing telepractice, via Internet video conferencing, to connect an individual with progressive aphasia due to dementia to a speech-language pathologist for treatment.
Methods: Participants received an Initial Evaluation, 8 person-centered Internet-based SLT sessions and two Post-Therapy Evaluations.

Three experiments examined the conditions under which the spatial choices of rats searching for food are influenced by the choices made by other rats. Model rats learned a consistent set of baited locations in a 5 × 5 matrix of locations, some of which contained food. In Experiment 1, subject rats could determine the baited locations after choosing 1 location because all of the baited locations were on the same side of the matrix during each trial (the baited side varied over trials).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo examine whether the outcome of a rat's own choices ("personal information") and the choice behavior of another rat ("social information") can jointly control spatial choices, rats were tested in an open field task in which they searched for food. For the rats of primary interest (Subject Rats), the baited locations were all on one side of the arena, but the specific locations baited and the side on which they occurred varied over trials. The Subject Rats were sometimes tested together with an informed "Model" rat that had learned to find food in the same five locations (all on the same side of the arena) on every trial.

The participatory research method Photovoice capitalizes on the spirit of the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words." We, a group of 10 individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and our project facilitator, used Photovoice as means to advocate for equal access to community resources. Often people with disabilities encounter difficulties in helping the able-bodied population to understand issues that are faced by persons who use wheelchairs to move about in the community.

The association between CCT and development of normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), however, is less clear. Accordingly, we designed this cross-sectional study to further explore the relationship between CCT and NTG.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Although the ability of central corneal thickness (CCT) to predict development of primary open-angle glaucoma has become increasingly well recognized, the ability of CCT to predict severity of glaucoma remains uncertain. This study was designed to expand the available knowledge about the relationship between CCT and glaucoma severity.
Methods: Retrospective identification of all patients with a clinical diagnosis of either primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension who were seen from September 2002 through May 2003 at the Albuquerque VA Medical Center eye clinic was completed.
Background: Although measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) is increasingly becoming an important component of glaucoma risk analysis, significant controversy exists regarding the benefit of calculating a corrected intraocular pressure (IOP) value from measured IOP and CCT data.
Methods: Three hundred forty-four male subjects were identified from a VA eye clinic with one of the following clinical diagnoses: ocular hypertension (OHT), primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and normal tension glaucoma suspect (NTGS). Using one eye per subject, multivariate logistic regression and correlational analyses were performed to determine relationships between glaucomatous visual-field loss and several glaucoma risk factors, including adjusted IOP values.
Primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) encompass a wide variety of lymphomas that are characterized by the localization of the malignant lymphocytes to the skin at presentation. They are slow-growing and rare, occurring in fewer than 1,000 people annually. Patients may go for months to years with skin abnormalities before being diagnosed.

Methods: Gastrointestinal tract development was examined in knockout mice and correlated with expression of EGF-R protein and EGF family members throughout the gut. Crossfostering experiments addressed roles of maternal- and neonatal-derived ligands in pup growth and intestinal development.
The extracellular domain of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) comprises four subdomains (I-IV) and mediates binding of several different polypeptide ligands, including EGF, transforming growth factor-alpha, and heparin-binding EGF. Previous studies have predominantly implicated subdomain III in ligand binding. To investigate a possible role for sequences in subdomain IV, we constructed several mutant EGFRs in which clusters of charged or aromatic amino acids were replaced with alanine.
