Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis: our experience with review of published reports.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyse the cases of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with review of published reports.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all nephrectomy specimens during February 1995 to January 2006. We found 26 cases of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.

CT appearances of hydatid disease at various locations.

Hydatid disease has characteristic imaging features on CT, which allow accurate preoperative diagnosis in most cases. However, when it occurs at unusual locations the diagnosis is often difficult, especially as the imaging appearance varies at different sites. In this article we have presented a pictorial review of the CT features of disease due to Echinococcus granulosus at various sites in the human body.

Temporal expression of transforming growth factor-beta2 and myostatin mRNA during embryonic myogenesis in Indian broilers.

TGF-beta2 and myostatin, the members of TGF family, act through both autocrine and paracrine mechanisms to regulate the growth and differentiation at various developmental stages in chicken. The kinetics and expression profile of these two growth factors were investigated by semi-quantitative RT-PCR, during the myogenesis of Indian broiler chickens. Total RNA was isolated from whole embryos on each of embryonic days (E) 0-6 (n=3 per day) and from the biceps femoris muscle at E7-E18 (n=3 per day).

Cytokines in reproductive remodeling of molting White Leghorn hens.

The role of cytokines in regression of the ovary and oviduct during induced molting in chickens was investigated by evaluating the expressions of IL-1beta, IL-6, IFN-gamma, IL-2, TGF-beta2, MIP-1beta and IL-8 in the regressing ovary and oviduct by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. In addition, serum hormonal profiles (estrogen, progesterone and corticosterone), along with the gross regression and histological changes of the ovary and oviduct, were investigated. The correlation between expression of cytokines and hormonal changes during the induced molting was also studied.

First time detection of Japanese encephalitis virus antigen in dry and unpreserved mosquito Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, 1901, from Karnal district of Haryana state of India.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) antigen has been detected by antigen capture enzyme linked immunosorbentassay (ELISA) in dry specimens of the mosquito Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, 1901, collected from Karnal district of Haryana state in northern India. These mosquitoes were stored in dry condition for 20 months, at room temperature, before processing. The procedure of detecting JEV infection in long time stored, dry vector mosquitoes, has important application in the surveillance of Japanese encephalitis.

A study on susceptibility status in aquatic and adult stages of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus was undertaken at International Airports of Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin located in southern India. WHO standard test kits were used to conduct insecticide susceptibility tests against various organophosphates, organochlorines, carbamates and synthetic pyrethroids.

Outbreak investigation of scrub Typhus in Himachal Pradesh (India).

Scrub Typhus outbreak investigation was undertaken during September 2003 in the three worst affected districts Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh (India). A total of 113 cases and 19 deaths (17.27 percent case fatality rate) were reported from the eight districts, which were reporting cases.

Polymeric nanoparticulate delivery system for Indocyanine green: biodistribution in healthy mice.

The objective of this study is to investigate the biodistribution of Indocyanine green (ICG) in healthy mice, when delivered through polymeric nanoparticles. The poly(DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles entrapping ICG were engineered and characterized. The extraction method for ICG recovery from biological samples was developed.

Surveillance of dengue vector at thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) International Airport.

A survey of Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquitoes was undertaken in and around the International airport at Thiruvananthapuram during premonsoon season. An attempt has been made in this paper to elaborate on the presence of risk potential for Dengue /yellow fever at the airport with the detection of Aedes breeding. The entomological indices have also been discussed with regard to presence of potential wet containers and rate of infestation by Aedes mosquitoes.

Antithrombin III assay using thrombin in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), other thromboembolic disorders and hepatic diseases.

Fifty cases comprising 11 cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), 16 cases of venous thromboses and 23 cases of hepatic diseases were studied for AT III levels using clotting assay. Twelve samples were subjected to ATIII estimation by the commercially available synthetic chromogenic assay. Twenty age and sex matched controls were also analysed to find out the reference value for the techniques.

Long-term use of penicillin for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis.

A continuing sub-clinical streptococcal infection might be responsible for chronic plaque psoriasis. In this open study, we investigated thirty patients with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis. The majority of the patients had been ill for 5 years or more (21 out of the total 30), and they had taken various treatment modalities for psoriasis with no significant improvement and frequent relapses.

Differential expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cytokine mRNA in chicken lines divergent for cutaneous hypersensitivity response.

Phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced delayed-type hypersensitivity is an immunocompetent trait considered an indicator of cell-mediated immune or T-cell responses. Divergent selection was performed to generate high and low lines for response to PHA-P. Extreme-responder birds of the F2 generation in each line were used to study possible differences in macrophage activity and the associated functional genes.

Genetics of immunocompetent traits in a synthetic broiler dam line.

Three hundred and three chicks of both sexes, from a synthetic dam line (SDL) of broiler chickens, were studied for economic traits (body weights at 4, 5 and 6 weeks of age) and immunological traits (humoral and cell mediated immune responses, and serum lysozyme concentration). The objective was to evaluate these traits and to estimate their genetic and non-genetic parameters. The humoral immune response was assessed by estimating the antibody response to sheep red blood cells using the haemagglutination (HA) test and serum IgG concentration using single radial immunodiffusion (SRID).

Plasmodium falciparum: genetic diversity of C-terminal region of MSP-1 in isolates from Indian sub-continent.

Malaria parasites exhibit sequence diversity for a number of stage specific antigens. Several studies have proved that merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) is an effective target eliciting a protective immune response. The MSP-1(42) region comprising two EGF-like domains is involved in generating protective immune response in humans and other experimental animals.

Plasmodium vivax malaria.

We report 11 cases of severe Plasmodium vivax malaria in Bikaner (western India). Patients exhibited cerebral malaria, renal failure, circulatory collapse, severe anemia, hemoglobinurea, abnormal bleeding, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and jaundice. Peripheral blood microscopy, parasite antigen-based assays, and parasite 18s rRNA gene-based polymerase chain reaction showed the presence of P.

Multicenter clinical trials on a novel polyherbal formulation in allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is the most frequently occurring immunological disorder. It affects men, women and children and represents significant cost in terms of suffering and loss of productivity. Allergy is termed as an excessive reaction to an environmental allergen.

Differential expression of the duplicated cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 genes (crabp2a and crabp2b) during zebrafish embryonic development.

The cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 (CRABP2) is believed to be involved in regulating access of retinoic acid to nuclear retinoic acid receptors. We have determined the cDNA sequence and the genomic organization of the duplicated crabp2 gene (crabp2b) in zebrafish. The crabp2b cDNA was 522bp in length and encodes a polypeptide consisting of 146 amino acids.

Reduced glutathione: Importance of specimen collection.

Glutathione, the dominant intracellular thiol, plays an important protective role against oxidative stress. The accidental findings of increased reduced glutathione level postprandially as compared to post absorptive level prompted the design of present study. Reduced Glutathione levels were estimated in 50 healthy individuals in post absorptive and postprandial phase by taking whole blood in ACD bulb.

Anti-inflammatory activities of Aller-7, a novel polyherbal formulation for allergic rhinitis.

Circumcision : A Time to Rethink.

Background: Circumcision is one of the most routinely done surgery world over but has no scientific basis to enforce it on all patients. Of late, the operation has been criticized, non-operative methods have been tried and operations preserving the skin of prepuce have been recommended. The presence of physiological phimosis, which is self-correcting by the age of 15 years in children, needs to be differentiated from the pathological variety.

Background: Pre dose or trough blood cyclosporine (CSA) concentration is routinely monitored and the result is used to alter patient's drug dosing. Patients with identical pre dose blood CSA may have very different systemic exposure to the drug. Recently CSA 2 hour post dose level [C2] has been reported to correlate better with drug exposure.

Vacuum-assisted closure: microdeformations of wounds and cell proliferation.

The mechanism of action of the Vacuum Assisted Closure Therapy (VAC; KCI, San Antonio, Texas), a recent novel innovation in the care of wounds, remains unknown. In vitro studies have revealed that cells allowed to stretch tend to divide and proliferate in the presence of soluble mitogens, whereas retracted cells remain quiescent. The authors hypothesize that application of micromechanical forces to wounds in vivo can promote wound healing through this cell shape-dependent, mechanical control mechanism.
