The management of mucinous prostatic adenocarcinoma include hormonal treatment, radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy with variable long-term outcome. We report a 59 year old man with advanced mucinous prostatic adenocarcinoma involving almost the entire bladder and had failed treatment with hormonal and radiotherapy, but subsequently underwent radical pelvic exenteration surgery that resulted in long-term cure. He remains alive, his PSA remains undetectable and his surveillance CT scans did not show any evidence of recurrence after 11 years post-surgery.

Background: Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has been inversely associated with prostate cancer risk. We determined if skin type and UVR exposure are linked with parameters of prostate cancer outcome.

Methods: We used a questionnaire to determine UVR exposure parameters and skin type in 553 men with prostate cancer and, using logistic regression and survival analysis, studied their association with T-stage, Gleason score, and survival after starting hormone manipulation therapy.

Ultraviolet radiation exposure increases basal cell carcinoma (BCC) risk, but may be protective against prostate cancer. We attempted to identify exposure patterns that confer reduced prostate cancer risk without increasing that of BCC. We used a questionnaire to assess exposure in 528 prostate cancer patients and 442 men with basal cell carcinoma, using 365 benign prostatic hypertrophy patients as controls.

Background: Concerns raised by opponents to condom provision in prisons have not been objectively examined and the issue continues to be debated. The long-term effects of the introduction of condoms and dental dams into New South Wales (NSW) prisons in 1996 was examined, focusing on particular concerns raised by politicians, prison officers, prison nurses and prisoners. These groups were worried that (a) condoms would encourage prisoners to have sex, (b) condoms would lead to an increase in sexual assaults in prisons, (c) prisoners would use condoms to hide and store drugs and other contraband and (d) prisoners would use condoms as weapons.

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms are prostate cancer risk candidates. We determined if SNPs in haplotype block sub-regions C2 (SNPs C2-1, G/C(3436), C2-2, A/G(3944)) or C1 (C1-1, C/T(20965), C1-2, C/T(30056)) are associated with risk in an ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-dependent manner. In men with very low exposure, SNPs in both sub-regions were associated with risk.

We determined whether the glutathione S-transferase GSTP1 Ile105 --> Val105 substitution is associated with response to androgen ablation therapy in patients with advanced prostate cancer. As response may be associated with tumor grade, Gleason score, clinical T stage and presence of metastases we also determined if GSTP1 genotypes were associated with these prognostic parameters. We speculated that GSTP1 Ile105/Ile105 would be linked with good response to androgen ablation therapy and, low/moderate tumor grade, 1/2 clinical T-stage, Gleason score < 6 and, no metastases.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation may reduce prostate cancer risk, suggesting that polymorphism in genes that mediate host pigmentation will be associated with susceptibility to this cancer. We studied 210 prostate cancer cases and 155 controls to determine whether vitamin D receptor (VDR, Taql and Fokl variants), tyrosinase (TYR, codon 192 variant) and melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R, Arg151Cys, Arg160Trp, Val92Met, Asp294His and Asp84Glu variants) genotypes are associated with risk. Epidemiological studies have suggested that UV exerts a protective effect on prostate cancer. Accordingly, we determined, in 210 prostate cancer cases, whether parameters of exposure, skin type and polymorphism in MC1R, VDR and TYR were associated with the outcome parameters, histological grade, clinical stage and presence of bone metastases. We used logistic regression analysis, with correction for age and metastases, stage and grade in the models, to determine if the frequencies of individual factors were different in the patient groups.

Myelodysplasia syndrome (MDS) presenting as spontaneous gingival hemorrhage is described. Gingival hemorrhage is recognized as a symptom of MDS, a rare group of potentially fatal hematological disorders, but it has not previously been documented as a presenting sign. The diagnostic pitfalls are discussed with the case, and the need for careful interpretation of laboratory findings in conjunction with clinical signs is emphasized.

The current study aimed to apply a novel enhanced chemiluminescence assay in the analysis of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels from patients with untreated adult periodontitis. 3666 sites in 25 patients were monitored prior to and after attachment loss was detected with a Florida disc probe. Parameters assessed were, relative attachment level, probing pocket depth, occurrence of bleeding on probing (single episode), GCF volume (microliter), total ALP levels (microIU/30 s sample time) and ALP concentration (IU/l).

The influence of container bases on nematode spread from infested pots or ground in an ornamental foliage nursery was investigated with Meloidogyne incognita as the test nematode and cowpea as the indicator plant. The container bases examined were black cloth, concrete masonry blocks, gravel, crushed cinders, and bare ground. Masonry blocks raised 46 cm above ground (raised bench) served as the control treatment.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCN) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) on renal function and urinary prostaglandin excretion. Twenty/ESWL patients and 20 PCN patients were studied pre-, 24 h and two weeks after treatment. Twenty-four hours after treatment PCN resulted in a fall in serum potassium, sodium and calcium.

Objectives: To assess the relative efficacy of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCN) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in clearing stones and to examine factors which affected the results from each treatment.

Patients And Methods: The study comprised 390 patients treated with PCN who were compared to 618 patients treated with ESWL. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to compare the odds of success and failure in the PCN group with those in the ESWL group, whilst controlling for any potential effects of age, sex, laterality, presence of other stones, previous stone history, pre-operative treatment and centre.

Ultrasonic scalers may be operated at different power settings which may influence the final therapeutic result. The displacement amplitude of the scaling tip may affect scaling efficiency or the degree of root surface damage.
