A study of torus palatinus and torus mandibularis in Pre-Columbian Peruvians.

An incidence of tori lower than previously reported was found in a population from Pre-Columbian Peru. It is suggested that the prevalence of tori along with other genetic markers with racial variation may be used to help identify and define a population group.

Effect of anesthesia on cardiovascular and renal function in the newborn piglet.

The effects of anesthetic agents, nitrous oxide-oxygen, nitrous oxide-oxygen plus ketamine, pentobarbital sodium and halothane, were determined in piglets 6 to 76 hr of age. After observations of cardiovascular and renal function in the unanesthetized state, the drugs were administered and observations were repeated in the anesthetized state. All of the anesthetics caused a decrease in cardiac output and an increase in total peripheral resistance in the newborn piglet.

Pathologic changes induced by an euthanasia agent.

Dogs and cats killed by intravenous injection of either 0.3 ml/kg body weight T-61 or 100 mg/kg body weight pentoarbital and necropsied at less than 5 minutes or at 15 minutes after injection did not have gross or microscopic pathological changes. A morphologic study of opportunistic cerebral toxoplasmosis.

The morphology of toxoplasma and its interaction with the cellular elements of the brain were studied in a patient who dies of extensive cerebral toxoplasmosis superimposed on Hodgkin's disease. The cerebral lesions were devoid of inflammatory cellular response and contained numerous organisms mostly in isolated multiplying forms in neurons, glia and vascular walls. Encysted forms containing multiplying organisms were seen infrequently.

Oral squamous acanthoma. Two additional cases with comments on etiology.

Two new cases of squamous acanthoma are presented, and the their clinical characteristics are compared to the eight cases previously reported. These two additional examples of this lesion are clinically similar to those previously reported. However, one of the two cases exhibits resolution after the removal of sources of trauma, thus lending support to the previously proposed theory of traumatic etiology.

Triton shells of intact erythrocytes.

About 40% of human erythrocyte membrane protein is resistant to solubilization in 0.5% Triton X-114. These components comprise a structure called a Triton shell roughly similar in size and shape to the original erythrocyte and thus constitute a cytoskeleton.

Cardiovascular effects of gallamine triethiodide and succinylcholine chloride during halothane anesthesia in the dog.

The cardiovascular effects of gallamine triethiodide and succinylcholine chloride were studied in Beagle dogs during controlled halothane anesthesia. Small but significant increases in heart rate and mean arterial presssure were observed 1 minute after intravenous injection of succinylcholine chloride. Intravenous injection of gallamine triethiodide did not produce significant cardiovascular changes.

Cardiopulmonary effects of rebreathing and nonrebreathing systems during halothane anesthesia in the cat.

Cardiopulmonary variables were measured in 3 groups of halothane-oxygen anesthetized cats. The groups, each containing 6 animals, were treated similarly except for maintenance anesthetic systems, and system variation was the basis for comparison. Groups were maintained, using a pediatric circle CO2 absorption system with an O2 flow of 0.

Cardiopulmonary effects of fentanyl-droperidol, nitrous oxide, and atropine sulfate in dogs.

The cardiopulmonary effects of droperidol-fentanyl, nitrous oxide, and atropine were evaluated in 12 adult male Beagle dogs. All dogs were surgically instrumented with a cardiac output thermistor and arterial and venous catheters and were prepared with a chronic tracheostomy. Each dog was used as its own control, and data obtained when dogs were nonanesthetized and nonmedicated were compared with data recorded after the test drugs were administered.
