Birth is one of the most important life events for animals. However, its significance in the developmental process is not fully understood. Here, we found that birth-induced alteration of glutamine metabolism in radial glia (RG), the embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs), is required for the acquisition of quiescence and long-term maintenance of postnatal NSCs.

These V-SVZ-derived neuroblasts normally migrate to the olfactory bulb through the rostral migratory stream, differentiate into interneurons, and are integrated into the preexisting olfactory circuit. When the brain is injured, some neuroblasts initiate migration toward the lesion and attempt to repair the damaged neuronal circuitry, but their low regeneration efficiency prevents functional recovery.

In the retrospective study, patient factors were included as gender, age, body mass index (BMI), and serum albumin concentration. In obese (BMI ≥25) patients, the post-titration dose of transdermal fentanyl was significantly lower than in normal (BMI 18.

However, signs of life (gasping, pupillary light reaction, or any form of body movement) have been suggested as favorable prognostic factors for patients with refractory cardiac arrest who are undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). This study determined whether signs of life are favorable neurological prognostic factors for patients undergoing ECPR post non-shockable cardiac arrest.

The available therapeutics for patients with MPS IVA, enzyme replacement therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, revealed limitations in the impact of skeletal lesions. Our previous study, a significant leap forward in MPS IVA research, showed that liver-targeted adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene transfer of human GALNS (hGALNS) restored GALNS enzymatic activity in blood and multiple tissues and partially improved the aberrant accumulation of storage materials.

Activation of astrocytes after sensory stimulation has been reported to be involved in increased blood flow in the central nervous system. In the present study, using a chemogenetic method to induce astrocyte activation in mice without sensory stimulation, we found that astrocytic activation led to increased blood flow in the olfactory bulb, suggesting that astrocyte activation is sufficient for increasing blood flow in the olfactory bulb. The technique established here will be useful for studying the mechanisms underlying sensory input-dependent blood flow increases.

Although a quantitative assessment of healthcare professional satisfaction is desirable, no specific measures have been devised to assess family satisfaction with the healthcare and care provided by EMTs.
Aims And Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate an EMT care family satisfaction scale to measure patient satisfaction with prehospital emergency care.
Normally aerated lung tissue on computed tomography (CT) is correlated with static respiratory system compliance (C) at zero end-expiratory pressure. In clinical practice, however, patients with acute respiratory failure are often managed using elevated PEEP levels. No study has validated the relationship between lung volume and tissue and C at the applied positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).

To recognize the importance of future countermeasures, we estimated the projected number and percentage of fall-related emergency medical service (EMS) calls.
Methods: We examined the sex, age group, and location of falls among patients aged ≥ 65 years who contacted emergency services in Sapporo City from 2013 to 2021.
In the injured brain, new neurons produced from endogenous neural stem cells form chains and migrate to injured areas and contribute to the regeneration of lost neurons. However, this endogenous regenerative capacity of the brain has not yet been leveraged for the treatment of brain injury. Here, we show that in healthy brain chains of migrating new neurons maintain unexpectedly large non-adherent areas between neighboring cells, allowing for efficient migration.

This study investigated personal and work-related factors influencing work-to-family negative spillover (WFNS), a key element of WLB, among EMTs. Methods A web-based survey was conducted from July 26 to September 13, 2021, among EMTs in Hokkaido, Japan.

We show that migrating neurons in mice possess a growth cone at the tip of their leading process, similar to that of axons, in terms of the cytoskeletal dynamics and functional responsivity through protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type sigma (PTPσ). Migrating-neuron growth cones respond to chondroitin sulfate (CS) through PTPσ and collapse, which leads to inhibition of neuronal migration.

Extracellular vesicle (EV)-encapsulated RNAs could be effective targets for liquid biopsy. We aimed to identify previously unknown EV-encapsulated lncRNAs in PDAC and establish highly accurate methods for isolating EVs.

Dietary glucoraphanin (GR), a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables that activates Nrf2 and induces its target antioxidant genes. We previously demonstrated that GR increased thermogenesis and mitigated HFD-induced obesity in lean healthy mice.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine OHCA registry between June 2014 and December 2017. Patients with asphyxia-related cardiac arrest aged ≥18 years were included.
Background: Gasping during resuscitation has been reported as a favorable factor for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We examined whether gasping during resuscitation is independently associated with favorable neurological outcomes in patients with refractory ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VF/pVT) undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation ECPR.
Methods: Data from a 2014 study on advanced cardiac life support for ventricular fibrillation with extracorporeal circulation in Japan (SAVE-J), which examined the efficacy of ECPR for refractory VF/pVT, were analyzed.
Background: The relationship among advanced airway management (AAM), ventilation, and oxygenation in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) who achieve prehospital return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) has not been validated. This study was designed to evaluate ventilation and oxygenation for each AAM technique (supraglottic devices [SGA] or endotracheal intubation [ETI]) using arterial blood gas (ABG) results immediately after hospital arrival.
Methods: This observational cohort study, using data from the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine OHCA Registry, included patients with OHCA with prehospital and hospital arrival ROSC between July 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019.

After the termination of migration, newborn neurons undergo spatially controlled dendrite formation and change into a complex morphology. The mechanisms of dendritic development of newborn neurons have not been fully understood.

A brief selection time (ST) regarding the transport of patients to designated hospitals is vital to achieving a good outcome. However, to our knowledge, no studies have reported the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ST.

To examine cell morphology and connectivity in organs such as the brain, scientists need to conduct cell segmentation, which extracts individual cell regions of different shapes and sizes from a 3D image. This is challenging due to the indistinct images often encountered in real biomedical research: in many cases, automatic segmentation methods inevitably contain numerous mistakes in the segmentation results, even when using advanced deep learning methods.
