The retinoic acid-inducible gene-I-like receptor (RLR) family is a group of cytosolic RNA helicase proteins that play an important role in sensing viral RNAs. Melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5), an RLR protein, recognizes viral double-stranded RNA and 5'-triphosphate single-stranded RNA in the cytoplasm for the expression of type I interferon (IFN). The expression of MDA5 is also induced by type I IFN.
