Pathology of sternal deformity in the Sprague-Dawley rat.

Pathological examination of two 12-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats revealed bending of the sternebrae. Grossly, the sternebrae distal to the third sternebra were bent towards the underside, and the episternal extremity was turned towards the head. Microscopically, the 4th sternebra was observed to have slipped behind the third sternebra, and fractures of the episternal cortex and slanting of the episternal cartilage were also observed.

Phenotype of preneoplastic and neoplastic liver lesions during spontaneous liver carcinogenesis of LEC rats.

The incidence and phenotype of preneoplastic and neoplastic liver lesions appearing in LEC rats after recovery from severe hereditary hepatitis were studied in comparison with the liver lesions appearing in chemical liver carcinogenesis. The livers of 168 rats (90 male, 78 female) were stained for seven histochemical markers at different time periods from the 20th week to the 122nd week of life. Glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and non-specific esterase (ES) were used as negative markers.

[A clinical study on five cases of respiratory infections caused by Neisseria meningitidis].

Five cases of the respiratory infections, in which Neisseria meningitidis was isolated upon the examination of the transtracheal aspiration (TTA), were reported. Patients studied were four males at the ages of 18, 56, 66 and 78 years, and a 18-year old female. Five cases were bronchopneumonia (two cases), acute bronchitis (two cases) and diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) (one case).

[Clinical evaluation of ofloxacin in the treatment of chronic complicated urinary tract infection].

Ofloxacin was administered orally at a daily dosage of 300 mg and 600 mg in three divided doses for 14 days to 24 and 60 patients with chronic complicated urinary infections, respectively, in order to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy. The clinical efficacy was evaluated according to the criterion proposed by the UTI Committee in Japan and its efficacy was evaluated in 84 cases. In the group of 24 patients receiving a daily dosage of 300 mg, the clinical effectiveness after a 5-day treatment was excellent in 13 cases and moderate in 7 cases.

[Diffusion of ofloxacin (OFLX) into prostatic tissue in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy].

Diffusion of ofloxacin (OFLX) into prostatic tissue was studied in 31 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy. Concentrations of OFLX in the serum and prostatic tissue were measured at scheduled intervals after 200 mg OFLX oral administration. The mean OFLX level in prostatic tissue and tissue/serum ratio at 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours was 3.

Bacterial and crystal adherence to the surfaces of indwelling urethral catheters.

Bacterial and crystal adherence to the surfaces of indwelling urethral catheters was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and immunofluorescence method in relation to microbiological examination. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated more frequently than gram-positive bacteria in urine and catheter cultures. Microorganisms and crystals frequently were associated with fibrillar material, some of which was considered to be fibrin.

[An operative case of chronic constrictive pericarditis with silicosis and lumbar caries].

We reported a case of chronic constrictive pericarditis complicated with silicosis and lumbar caries, who was improved by the operation. The patient was a 65 year old man whose past occupation was a mason. He was admitted to our hospital with chronic heart failure on March, 1986.

[Clinical efficacy of imipenem/cilastatin sodium in patients with respiratory tract infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

The clinical utility of imipenem/cilastatin sodium (IPM/CS, Tienam) was studied in 9 patients with respiratory tract infections from whom Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated using transtracheal aspiration. The patients treated were 6 males and 3 females, with ages between 42 and 78 years. The infections diagnosed were chronic bronchitis in 5 patients, diffuse panbronchiolitis in 2 and bronchopneumonia in 2.

Enhanced interleukin production after long-term administration of erythromycin stearate.

The effects of erythromycin stearate (10 mg/kg/day) were studied on productions of interleukin (IL)-1 and -2 in mice after a long-term treatment. A 28-day treatment resulted in higher levels of IL-1 production by macrophages and of IL-2 production by splenocytes, while a 7-day treatment did not increase them. T-cell growth factor activity of IL-2 preparation prepared on day 28 of treatment as determined by HT-2 cell proliferation was reduced by about 40% in the presence of anti-murine IL-4 monoclonal antibodies, while control IL-2 activity was not reduced.

[Fanconi's anemia with squamous cell carcinoma--a case report and a review of literature].

A 39-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of hemosputum and right neck swelling. Pharyngography, neck CT scan and laryngoscopy revealed moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the right pyriform sinus. After series of examinations, it was found that she had pancytopenia, hypoplastic bone marrow, hyperpigmentation of the skin, cardiac anomaly, small stature, hypogonadism, chromosomal aberrations and consanguinity in her parents.

[A case of eosinophilic pneumonia with acute progressive dyspnea and diffuse small nodular shadows on chest X-ray film].

A 52-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with high-grade fever, dry cough and severe dyspnea. Chest X-ray films revealed diffuse small nodular shadows in all lung fields, prominently in the middle and lower lung fields. On examination, peripheral blood eosinophilic leukocytosis and severe hypoxemia were demonstrated.

A 27-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of purpuras and legs' edema in the 38th week of pregnancy. On admission, the hemoglobin was 7.8 g/dl, platelets 20,000/microliter and WBC 6,600/microliters with 52% blast cells.

[Squamous cell carcinoma of the lung metastasized solitary cystic formation in the cerebellum].

A 54-year-old male previously diagnosed as having a lung squamous cell carcinoma T2N2M0 in stage III A was readmitted to our hospital, as he was complaining of a gait disturbance. A brain CT, an MRCT scan, and vertebral arteriography revealed that the lung carcinoma had metastasized as a solitary cystic formation in the right cerebellum. Thus, a craniotomy, a cyst fluid aspiration, and tumoral resection was performed.

Clinical study on bacteria detected in the upper and lower respiratory tracts in patients with sinobronchial syndrome.

The authors examined bacteria to confirm the pathogenesis of sinobronchial syndrome (SBS). There were several theories such as the pus-descending, the pus-ascending, the coinciding theory and so on. Detection of bacteria was performed in SBS patients, empyema patients with no lower respiratory disease, and healthy adults.

[The effect of erythromycin treatment on natural killer (NK) cell activity in patients with chronic lower respiratory tract infections].

We measured NK activity before and after administration of erythromycin in 7 cases of chronic respiratory infection, and investigated the relationship between NK activity and improvement of the clinical syndrome. 1) We saw a significant rise in NK activity after treatment of erythromycin. [A case of measles in adolescents with myocarditis and pneumonia].

A 18-year-old man was admitted with fever, dry cough, erythema, conjunctivitis, and dyspnea. The case was diagnosed as measles because of the typical clinical course and the increase of measles viral antibody titre. Electrocardiogram showed transient ST-T abnormalities and the laboratory data showed transient increase of CPK.

A case of inverted papilloma of the bladder with mild atypia in a 31-year-old male is reported. The patient was admitted complaining of macroscopic hematuria. An excretory urogram revealed a small filling defect in the center of the bladder.

Nephritogenoside is a minor component of the basement membrane of normal animals (including humans). It is a glycopeptide with the ability to induce chronic progressive glomerulonephritis (end stage kidney) when administered as a single footpad injection, and contains a novel carbohydrate-peptide linkage. Accumulation of abnormally high ploid nuclei in the liver of LEC rats developing spontaneous hepatitis.

Enlarged hepatocytes with huge nuclei were found in LEC rats with hereditary hepatitis. Flow cytometric analysis of the DNA content of nuclei from jaundiced LEC rats revealed the presence of very high polyploids, such as 32n and 64n. At the age of 12 weeks, before the onset of hepatitis, 8n polyploid nuclei were more frequent in LEC rats than in LEA rats, a sibling line of LEC rats.
