Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze antibiotic prescribing practices for children under 5 in West African countries using the WHO AWaRe classification, covering data from 15,854 outpatient visits at public primary health centers.
  • - Results showed high rates of antibiotic prescriptions among neonates and young infants, with percentages ranging from 59% to 83% across Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger, and about 93% of prescribed antibiotics being first-choice treatments, mainly amoxicillin.
  • - Conclusions indicate that while high numbers of antibiotics were prescribed, the appropriateness of these prescriptions—and the potential need for further evaluation—remains important, with a minimum threshold of 60% met for the recommended categories in each country. *

Article Synopsis
  • Since 2010, Burkina Faso has implemented community-based management for childhood illnesses, focusing on enhancing local healthcare through community health workers and free health services.
  • A study conducted from February to March 2023 assessed community satisfaction with the care provided by these workers in two health districts using surveys and focus groups.
  • Results indicate that while households benefit from the care, satisfaction is low due to issues with the availability and communication of community health workers, suggesting that improvements are needed in these areas.

This study was carried out in 3 types of biotopes where vegetable crops are not grown to highlight their contribution to the dynamics of vegetable-infesting flies. To this end, a trapping system based on a sexual attractant, the Cuelure associated with an insecticide was set up in 18 biotopes (6 natural areas, 6 mango orchards, and 6 agroforestry parks) in the regions of Hauts Bassins and Cascades in the South-West of Burkina Faso. During the trapping monitoring, which was done every 2 wk to collect insects captured, fruits present in 3 types of biotopes were sampled and incubated for insect emergence.

Background: Micronutrient-fortified balanced energy-protein (BEP) supplements are promising interventions to prevent intrauterine growth retardation in low- and middle-income countries. On the other hand, one concern with blanket prenatal supplementation programs using energy-dense supplements is that they could lead to more maternal and/or infant overweight. However, evidence is lacking on the potential effect of BEP on maternal and offspring body composition.

Background: The AIRE operational project will evaluate the implementation of the routine Pulse Oximeter (PO) use in the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI) strategy for children under-5 in primary health care centers (PHC) in West Africa. The introduction of PO should promote the accurate identification of hypoxemia (pulse blood oxygen saturation Sp02 < 90%) among all severe IMCI cases (respiratory and non-respiratory) to prompt their effective case management (oxygen, antibiotics and other required treatments) at hospital. We seek to understand how the routine use of PO integrated in IMCI outpatients works (or not), for whom, in what contexts and with what outcomes.
