Upregulation of the Wilms' tumour 1 (WT1) gene is common in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and is associated with poor prognosis. WT1 generates 12 primary transcripts through different translation initiation sites and alternative splicing. The short WT1 transcripts express abundantly in primary leukaemia samples.

Maternal transfer is a predominant route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure to offspring. We reviewed and synthesized published and unpublished data on maternal transfer of MeHg in birds. Using paired samples of females' blood ( = 564) and their eggs ( = 1814) from 26 bird species in 6 taxonomic orders, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate whether maternal transfer of MeHg to eggs differed among species and caused differential toxicity risk to embryos.

Conservation of long-distance migratory species poses unique challenges. Migratory connectivity, that is, the extent to which groupings of individuals at breeding sites are maintained in wintering areas, is frequently used to evaluate population structure and assess use of key habitat areas. However, for species with complex or variable annual cycle movements, this traditional bimodal framework of migratory connectivity may be overly simplistic.

Background: Despite improvements in surgical technique and implant longevity, some patients continue to report dissatisfaction after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). As patient satisfaction is increasingly used as a quality metric, the objective of this study was to gain better understanding of satisfaction with total joint arthroplasty from the patient perspective.

Methods: Five hundred fifty-one primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with a minimum of 1-year follow-up and were responsive to a satisfaction survey were analyzed.

Background: The subscapularis tendon is commonly released during shoulder arthroplasty, and its integrity and repair postoperatively have been shown important to help maximize patient function. However, diagnosing subscapular tendon failure can be difficult with magnetic resonance imaging secondary to metal artifact as well as very costly.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of ultrasound imaging in evaluating subscapularis integrity at specific time points following shoulder arthroplasty, in a blinded fashion.

Background: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are gaining an important role in the assessment of quality of care. There are currently limited data on the effect of payer type on PROs in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This study compared both disease-specific and general health PROs among patients stratified according to their payer type.

Background: Although smoking is a well-accepted risk factor for surgical complications, the effect of smoking on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) has not been previously investigated. Prompted by an increasingly value-conscious healthcare environment, the purpose of this study is to investigate the association between smoking and PROs in total joint arthroplasty (TJA).

Methods: A retrospective review of 713 primary total hip and knee replacements was performed.

Background: Depression and poor mental health are known to be negative predictors of patient-reported outcomes after total joint arthroplasty. Although previous studies have examined these risk factors in isolation to each other, they are, in reality, closely related, and yet each represents a different aspect of one's psychological well-being. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between depression and patient-reported outcomes, taking into account patients' baseline mental health.

We compared total mercury (Hg) concentrations in whole blood of harlequin ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) sampled within and among two geographically distinct locations and across three years in southwest Alaska. Blue mussels were collected to assess correlation between Hg concentrations in locally available forage and birds. Mercury concentrations in harlequin duck blood were significantly higher at Unalaska Island (0.

In North America and Europe, sea ducks are important indicators of ecological health and inshore marine pollution. To explore spatial variation in mercury accumulation in common eiders in the northeastern United States, we compared concentrations of total mercury in common eider blood at several New England locations between 1998 and 2013. Eider food items (mollusks) were collected and analyzed to determine if mercury concentrations in eider blood were indicative of local mercury bioavailability.

Component signaling in taste mixtures containing both beneficial and dangerous chemicals depends on peripheral processing. Unidirectional mixture suppression of chorda tympani (CT) nerve responses to sucrose by quinine and acid is documented for golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). To investigate mixtures of NaCl and acids, we recorded multifiber responses to 50 mM NaCl, 1 and 3 mM citric acid and acetic acid, 250 μM citric acid, 20 mM acetic acid, and all binary combinations of each acid with NaCl (with and without 30 μM amiloride added).

The concentrations of five esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (parabens) were measured using HPLC-MS/MS at four serial locations across the human breast from axilla to sternum using human breast tissue collected from 40 mastectomies for primary breast cancer in England between 2005 and 2008. One or more paraben esters were quantifiable in 158/160 (99%) of the tissue samples and in 96/160 (60%) all five esters were measured. Variation was notable with respect to individual paraben esters, location within one breast and similar locations in different breasts.

Anthropogenic inputs of mercury (Hg) into the environment have significantly increased in the past century. Concurrently, the availability of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic systems has increased to levels posing risks to ecological and human health. We use the common loon (Gavia immer) as an upper trophic level bioindicator of aquatic Hg toxicity in freshwater lakes.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) staining is associated with terminal fields of the glossopharyngeal and chorda tympani nerves in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST). To address AChE function at these sites, the location of the staining was examined at the fine structural level in combination with the labeling of chorda tympani nerve fibers with biotinylated dextran in golden Syrian hamsters. AChE staining was located in the endoplasmic reticulum of geniculate ganglion neuronal somata, and extracellularly, surrounding labeled chorda tympani terminal fibers and boutons in the NST.
