Acute fulminant myocarditis is a rare event in children, accounting for about 10% of all cases of acute myocarditis. Its lack of specific onset patterns and unpredictable evolution make diagnosis and prompt treatment challenging. We observed six cases of fulminant myocarditis admitted to our Pediatric Emergency Unit (Campania region, Sothern Italy) within a very short timeframe (50 days, from July to September 2024).

Reticulate pigmentary disorders can be classified into inherited or acquired and cutaneous drug- induced reticulate hyperpigmentation belongs to this last group. The list of the drugs involved is constantly increasing and chemotherapy agents are frequently implicated. We report a new case of chemotherapy-related reticulate hyperpigmentation to gemcitabine, even though a previous chemotherapy with nanoparticle, albumin-bound (Nab®) paclitaxel and gemcitabine may have promoted the onset of the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares CO2 laser treatment and surgical deroofing for managing hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) tunnels, focusing on the effectiveness of each method in terms of healing time, pain, and cosmetic results.
  • The results showed that the CO2 laser group had a significantly shorter healing time and lower pain perception compared to the surgical deroofing group, with mean healing times of 4.7 weeks versus 10.9 weeks.
  • Both treatments had low complication rates and similar rates of complete healing at a 6-month follow-up, indicating that while CO2 laser might offer quicker recovery, both methods are effective for HS tunnels.

Article Synopsis
  • Dermoscopy aids in diagnosing skin cancers and inflammatory skin diseases, providing detailed visual features.
  • In three cases of granuloma faciale, distinct dermoscopic patterns were observed, such as elongated linear vessels and orange areas.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial as flat-type granuloma faciale can be easily confused with basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous sarcoidosis, requiring histological confirmation before treatment.

Background: Preterm birth is a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. It is unclear whether the introduction of a universal transvaginal ultrasound cervical length screening program in women at low risk for preterm delivery is associated with a reduction in the frequency of preterm birth.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that the introduction of a midtrimester universal transvaginal ultrasound cervical length screening program in asymptomatic singleton pregnancies without prior preterm delivery would reduce the rate of preterm birth at <37 weeks of gestation.

Cutaneous sebaceous carcinoma (CSC) can be classified into periocular and extraocular and can occur as part of Muir-Torre syndrome. It is usually a pink-red or yellow solitary nodule, mainly located in the head and neck region. According to the literature, dermoscopy is characterized in most cases by a yellow color, polymorphic vessels, and ulceration.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) restrictions have been correlated with vitamin D deficiency in children, but some uncertainties remain. We retrospectively studied vitamin 25-(OH) D blood levels in 2182 Italian children/adolescents hospitalized for various chronic diseases in the year before (n = 1052) and after (n = 1130) the nationwide lockdown. The type of underlying disease, gender, and mean age (91 ± 55 and 91 ± 61 months, respectively) of patients included in the two periods were comparable.

Background: The concurrent, recent increase in prevalence of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) and twin pregnancy, in combination with the shared risk factors, has led to speculation that multiples are a risk factor for GDM and, GDM may contribute to twin complications. Twin pregnancies have different physiology and greater obstetric risks compared to singletons, including prematurity and growth restriction. However, in twins methods of GDM screening, thresholds for diagnosis and treatment, as well as glycaemic control targets, have been predominantly extrapolated from singletons.

Introduction: Spitz nevi (SN) are benign melanocytic proliferations frequently occurring in children. Some pigmented SN with a starburst pattern evolve into the "stardust" one, which is characterized by a central, black to gray, hyperpigmented area and remnants of a brown network at the periphery. These dermoscopy changes are often the first alert to induce excision.

Background: Our study aimed to identify a new cut-off for febrile seizure (FS) with a good prognosis, thereby replacing the 15 min described in the standard definition of simple febrile seizure (SFS).

Methods: Our study was a retrospective observational study (from January 2018 to December 2018) on children admitted to the Pediatric emergency room of the Santobono-Pausilipon Hospital, Naples, Italy, Pediatric Unit of Latina, Rome, Italy, and Policlinico-Vittorio-Emanuele University Hospital, Catania, Italy, for fever, which developed SFS during the hospitalization. All included patients had their seizures classified as SFS according to the international criteria for epilepsy.

Including children in biomedical research is an argument for continual reflection and practice refinement from an ethical and legal standpoint. Indeed, as children reach adulthood, a reconsent method should be used, and data connected with samples should ideally be updated based on the children's growth and long-term results. Furthermore, because most pediatric disorders are uncommon, children's research initiatives should conform to standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by worldwide scientific organizations for successfully sharing data and samples.

Introduction: Visceral solid cancers can metastasize in almost any organ, including the skin and its appendages.

Case Presentation: We report here the case of a 19-year-old Caucasian girl carrying a diagnosis of malignant germ cell tumor of the ovary, with pulmonary and brain metastases, that developed a painful red-violaceous subungual papule of the 4th finger of the left hand, associated with an over-curvature of the nail plate. Dermoscopy was characterized initially by different shades of pink and red, while after few weeks, it showed black pigmentation due to subcorneal hematomas, hemorrhagic crusts, and a rainbow pattern.

Introduction: Eruptive cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (ESCC), eruptive squamous atypia (ESA) and eruptive keratoacanthomas (EKA) are different terms used to describe the occurrence of multiple cutaneous squamous neoplasms after skin surgery, laser treatment, traumas, such as tattoos, and local or systemic medical treatments. ESCC have been reported to arise at the sites of skin surgery, including the area affected by the primary tumor and split thickness skin graft (STSG) donor and recipient sites.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to report 2 additional cases of ESCC after skin surgery and make a critical revision of the literature, analyzing the clinical, histological features and outcomes of ESCC after cutaneous surgery.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders experienced an exacerbation of their symptoms with more access to the emergency department (ED). However, little is known about the experience of somatic symptom disorders (SSDs) during the COVID-19 pandemic in children. Therefore, we aimed to compare the rates of pediatric ED admissions for SSDs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to understand whether the relative risk of ED admissions for SSDs changed between the two periods.

Purpose: Abnormal flow in the ductus venosus (DV) has been reported to be associated with adverse perinatal outcome, chromosomal abnormalities, and congenital heart defects (CHD). Aneuploid fetuses have increased risk of CHD, but there are discrepancies on the performance of this markers in euploid fetuses. The aim of this meta-analysis was to establish the predictive accuracy of DV for CHD.
