Article Synopsis
  • - The report discusses a case of fatal canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in a 2-year-old pug from Brazil, which was imported to French Guiana, a region not typically associated with this disease.
  • - The dog initially showed a skin issue that healed, but later developed serious symptoms, leading to suspicion of VL, which was confirmed posthumously by testing for L. infantum.
  • - This case highlights the rarity of canine VL in French Guiana and suggests a need for increased local surveillance to monitor potential transmission routes of the parasite.

Stress and HIV disproportionately affect Latinx adults in the United States, contributing to numerous health inequities. Among people living with HIV (PLWH), increased stress is associated with decreased medication adherence, effectiveness, and higher rates of immunosuppression and comorbidities. Our study ( N = 126) examined the relationship between perceived stress and HIV-related health among Latinx ( n = 83) and non-Latinx White ( n = 43) PLWH.

The widespread dissemination of carbapenem-resistant bacteria in wastewater systems, particularly from clinical sources, poses a significant public health risk. This study assessed the concentrations and distributions of extracellular DNA (exDNA) and intracellular DNA (iDNA) harboring carbapenemase genes in wastewater from six tertiary care hospitals in Germany. We collected a total of 36 samples, comprising six biological replicates from each hospital, and analysed them using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and digital PCR (dPCR).

Antibiotic resistance is increasingly recognized as a critical challenge affecting human, animal, and environmental health. Yet, environmental dynamics and transport of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial communities in karst and non-karst leachate following poultry litter land applications are not well understood. This study investigates impacts of broiler poultry litter application on the proliferation of ARGs (tetW, qnrS, ermB, sulI, and bla), class 1 integron (intI1 i), and alterations in microbial communities (16S rRNA) within karst derived soils, which are crucial and under-researched systems in the global hydrological cycle, and non-karst landscapes.

Acinetobacter baumannii has become a prominent nosocomial pathogen, primarily owing to its remarkable ability to rapidly acquire resistance to a wide range of antimicrobial agents and its ability to persist in diverse environments. However, there is a lack of data on the molecular epidemiology and its potential implications for public health of A. baumannii strains exhibiting clinically significant resistances that originate from non-clinical environments.

Purpose: Although most anesthetic drugs are classified as compatible with breastfeeding, literature shows that anesthesia providers routinely advise patients to discard milk when receiving all types of anesthesia. The purpose of this project was to determine if a multimodal educational module and cognitive aid improved student registered nurse anesthetists' knowledge and confidence to counsel lactating patients on current anesthesia-related recommendations.

Design: This project used a pre-experimental one-group, pretest and post-test design.

The frequencies of 6 different facultative pathogenic bacteria of the ESKAPE group (priority list WHO) and a total of 14 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with different priorities for human medicine were quantified in wastewaters of poultry and pig slaughterhouses using molecular biological approaches. Raw sewage from poultry and pig slaughterhouses was found to be contaminated not only with facultative pathogenic bacteria but also with various categories of clinically relevant ARGs, including ARGs against the reserve antibiotics group. The concentration of the different gene targets decreased after on-site conventional biological or advanced oxidative wastewater treatments, but was not eliminated.

The system of the four different human blood groups is based on the oligosaccharide antigens A or B, which are located on the surface of blood cells and other cells including endothelial cells, attached to the membrane proteins or lipids. After transfusion, the presence of these antigens on the apical surface of endothelial cells could induce an immunological reaction against the host. The final oligosaccharide sequence of AgA consists of Gal-GlcNAc-Gal (GalNAc)-Fuc.

Animal manure improves soil fertility and organic carbon, but long-term deposition may contribute to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) entering the soil-water environment. Additionally, long-term impacts of applying animal manure to soil on the soil-water microbiome, a crucial factor in soil health and fertility, are not well understood. The aim of this study is to assess: (1) impacts of long-term conservation practices on the distribution of ARGs and microbial dynamics in soil, and runoff; and (2) associations between bacterial taxa, heavy metals, soil health indicators, and ARGs in manures, soils, and surface runoff in a study following 15 years of continuous management.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been reported as major anthropogenic reservoirs for the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into the environment, worldwide. While most studies mainly focus on the intracellular DNA (iDNA), extracellular DNA (exDNA) accounting for a significant proportion of the total DNA in wastewater, was usually neglected. Following the One Health approach, this study focuses on wastewaters of municipal, clinical, and livestock origins (n = 45) that undergo different treatment processes (i.

Many organizations play a role in creating, supporting, clarifying, and certifying the foundational documents for nurse practitioner (NP) education and practice. Quality standards for NP education are promulgated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). Competency-based education, in the form of interactive learning, helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.

The care of breastfeeding patients who require anesthesia presents unique challenges; therefore, caregivers must be knowledgeable regarding drugs' pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic profiles to ensure the safety of the breastfed infant. Although most anesthetic drugs are compatible with breastfeeding, health care providers continue to advise patients to "pump and dump." This advice can lead to undesirable outcomes, including interruption or cessation of breastfeeding, creating possible physical and psychological challenges for parents and their neonates.
