We examined 40 female patients for the presence of fastidious bacteria in the bladder by culture of mid catheter and suprapubic aspiration urine specimens. Gardnerella vaginalis and Ureaplasma urealyticum were the most frequently isolated fastidious species. The suprapubic aspirate was positive in 3 patients with more than 10(5) colony-forming units per ml.

A 95% follow-up of all known diabetic patients in one racial group in Papua New Guinea was performed. Mortality was high with an average life-span of 4-5 years from the time of diagnosis. Microvascular diabetic complications were detected in over half of the surviving diabetic patients whose average duration of known disease was 3.

Phase-contrast microscopy of the urine of a young Greek woman with macroscopic haematuria showed sickling of the red blood cells. The diagnosis of sickle-cell trait was confirmed with haemoglobin electrophoresis, and an intravenous pyelogram demonstrated the typical medullary cavities seen in this disease. Urine collected from the left ureter, from which the haematuria originated, grew 10(6) Ureaplasma urealyticum/ml.

Diabetes is relatively common in the Tolais of the Gazelle Peninsula. The syndrome has the clinical and biochemical features of maturity-onset diabetes, with a familial tendency, a tendency to obesity and insulin release in response to a carbohydrate load. There is a high incidence of microvascular complications in these patients, and the median survival time is between 4 and 5 years.
