Objective: In adults, it is well known that high protein intake may increase the risk of nephrolithiasis through increased urinary calcium excretion and other mechanisms. We aimed to assess the role of protein intake on urinary calcium excretion in children with idiopathic hypercalciuria (HC).

Patients And Methods: The 24-h urinary urea excretion as a reflection of protein intake was evaluated in 65 children with HC and in 76 normocalciuric control children.

Growth retardation and osteopenia have been reported in some children with idiopathic hypercalciuria (IHC), particularly in those with nephrocalcinosis. The duration of hypercalciuria might be a risk factor for osteopenia. A retrospective longitudinal analysis of statural growth and a cross-sectional evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) was carried out in 26 IHC children followed for 4-13 years.
