In the present work, we described the expression and activity of extracellular signal-related kinases 1-2 (ERK1-2) in mouse primordial germ cells (PGCs) from 8.5-14.5 days post coitum (dpc) and investigated whether these kinases play a role in regulating the various processes of PGC development.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers found that special growth factors are needed for a type of cell called primordial germ cells (PGCs) to grow and survive.
  • They discovered a mix of these growth factors that helps PGCs live longer without needing support from other cells.
  • This breakthrough allows scientists to study PGCs better, which is important for understanding how eggs and sperm develop in mammals.

Strict control of cell proliferation and cell loss is essential for the coordinated functions of different cell populations in complex multicellular organisms. Oogenesis is characterized by a first phase occurring during embryo-fetal life and in common with spermatogenesis, during which mitotic proliferation of the germline stem cells, the primordial germ cells (PGC), prevails over germ cell death. The result is the formation of a relatively high number of germ cells depending on the species, ready to enter sex specific differentiation.
