Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) poses a significant health risk to both humans and non-human primates used in research, especially given the challenges posed by emerging mycobacterial species.
  • A natural outbreak of TB was found in imported cynomolgus macaques at AnaPath Research S.A.U. after initial negative tests, leading to extensive screening and diagnosis of the affected animals.
  • Despite most macaques showing no symptoms, necropsies confirmed TB in 10 out of 114 animals, tracing the infection back to Asia, while all sanitary measures taken successfully eradicated the disease.

Background. Recurrent therapeutic failures reported for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infective endocarditis (IE) with vancomycin may be due to poor bactericidal activity. Alternative antibacterial approaches using bacteriophages may overcome this limitation.

Background The potential of phage therapy for the treatment of endovascular infections remains to be evaluated. Methods and Results The efficacy of a phage cocktail combining phage vB_SauH_2002 and phage 66 was evaluated against a methicillin-sensitive strain in vitro and in vivo in a rodent model of experimental endocarditis. Six hours after bacterial challenge, animals were treated with (1) the phage cocktail.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a newly isolated phage called 3043-K38 that targets a specific capsule type (K38) in a species known for being resistant to antibiotics and often associated with hospital infections.
  • The phage carries a unique depolymerase enzyme that can break down the protective capsule, making the bacteria more vulnerable to immune attacks.
  • This research emphasizes the potential of using this phage and its depolymerase as a new strategy to combat drug-resistant bacterial infections in clinical settings.

Introduction: During pandemics, such as the SARS-CoV-2, filtering facepiece respirators plays an essential role in protecting healthcare personnel. The recycling of respirators is possible in case of critical shortage, but it raises the question of the effectiveness of decontamination as well as the performance of the reused respirators.

Method: Disposable respirators were subjected to ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) treatment at single or successive doses of 60 mJ/cm after a short drying cycle (30 min, 70°C).

Background: Infantile spasms (IS) are a severe epileptic encephalopathy. In patients with early focal ischemia and refractory IS, a preoperative evaluation is required even if IS are the only ictal manifestation.

Methods: We report three such patients who presented with IS between 5 and 7 months of age without any other focal seizure types.

Unlabelled: Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is rare disorder characterised by recurrent attacks of hemiplegia followed by developmental delay. We investigated the parental perceptions and psychosocial issues of AHC. Using a questionnaire sent to the French AHC association, we investigated families' concerns and needs of support.

Although the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is used both in agronomics and in research, genomic resources for this species are still limited and no microsatellite-based genetic map has been reported. Our aim was to construct a rabbit genetic map with cytogenetically mapped microsatellites so as to build an integrated genetic and cytogenetic map. A reference population of 187 rabbits comprising eight three-generation families with 10-25 offspring per family was produced.

A first generation clone-based physical map for the bovine genome was constructed combining, fluorescent double digestion fingerprinting and sequence tagged site (STS) marker screening. The BAC clones were selected from an Inra BAC library (105,984 clones) and a part of the CHORI-240 BAC library (26,500 clones). The contigs were anchored using the screening information for a total of 1303 markers (451 microsatellites, 471 genes, 127 EST, and 254 BAC ends).

A swine DNA genomic library was constructed in yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) using the pYAC4 vector and the AB1380 strain. The DNA prepared from two Large White males was partially digested with EcoRI and size selected after both digestion and ligation. The YAC library contained 33792 arrayed clones with an average size of 280 kb as estimated by analysis of 2% of the clones, thus representing a threefold coverage of the swine haploid genome.
