Background: Thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) plays a pivotal role in various physiological mechanisms, including antioxidant defence, detoxification, apoptosis, regulation of enzyme activities and cellular signal transduction. TDH can be used as a biomarker to detect oxidative stress (OS) levels and ischemia status in the tissues. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery is a procedure associated with high oxidative stress.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the effects of preoperative listening to patient-preferred music and classical music on postoperative anxiety and recovery.

Methods: A prospective, randomized controlled, single-blind study included 255 patients who were scheduled for elective inguinal hernia operation under general anesthesia. Spielberger state State-Trait Anxiety Inventory form 1,2 (STAI-I, STAI-II), Quality of Recovery Score-40 (QoR-40) were applied in the preoperatively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if patients receiving rhomboid intercostal block (RIB) or pectoral nerve block (PECS) after unilateral modified radical mastectomy (MRM) use less opioids than those receiving local anesthetic infiltration.
  • Eighty-one female patients were randomly divided into three groups: RIB, PECS, and control (local infiltration), with assessments of tramadol usage, recovery quality, pain scores, and sleep quality in the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Results showed that both RIB and PECS groups had significantly lower tramadol consumption and better recovery quality and sleep compared to the control group, indicating these blocks are effective in managing pain post-MRM surgery.

The serratus posterior superior intercostal plane (SPSIP) block is a novel technique recently described for thoracic analgesia. This study presents two cases using this technique for postoperative pain after mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection. The SPSIP block was administered to the patients in the preoperative period as part of multimodal analgesia, and postoperative pain was monitored using the numeric rating scale (NRS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated changes in patient demographics and clinical characteristics in non-COVID ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing them with the year before the pandemic.
  • A total of 2,292 patients were analyzed, revealing a significant increase in ICU admissions during the pandemic, with longer stays and distinct diagnoses compared to the pre-pandemic period.
  • Findings indicate a notable shift in the profiles of patients requiring non-COVID ICU care due to the pandemic's broader impact on healthcare resources and admission patterns.

Background: Although laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy is associated with faster return to daily activity, inadequate postoperative pain control can cause prolonged hospital stays and patient discomfort. Erector spinae plane block (ESP) can be administered for postoperative pain management in abdominal and thoracic surgery. We investigated the effects of unilateral ESP block application in laparoscopic hernia surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • High-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) has been used in airway surgeries but is less reported during percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT), prompting a study to compare it with traditional ventilation methods.
  • In a study of 75 patients, three groups were formed: one using endotracheal tubes (ETT), another using laryngeal mask airways (LMA), and the last using HFJV, analyzing data such as procedure duration and complications.
  • Results indicated that HFJV led to significantly shorter PDT durations and fewer complications compared to both ETT and LMA, suggesting it could be a more effective method for airway management during PDT.

Background: Anxiety is a state of worry caused by the anticipation of external or internal danger. Awareness During Anesthesia (ADA) is an unexpected memory recall during anesthesia. In this study, we aimed to determine the factors that affect preoperative anxiety and observe the incidence of ADA, as well as to determine the anxiety levels of these patients with a history of ADA.

Background/aim: To determine the effectiveness of pregabalin and adductor canal block on opioid consumption, postoperative pain, and fast-tracking.

Materials And Methods: A total of 51 American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) classification I–II patients aged 18–70 years who were scheduled to undergo elective anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were included in the study. Patients were randomized into groups P, A, and C.

Background: Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) use is very common during anesthesia practice. Sore throat, earache, hoarseness and swallowing difficulties may occur on LMA insertion. The primary aim of this study was to describe the effects of topical application of a spray formula of chlorhexidine gluconate and benzydamine hydrochloride (Kloroben® oral spray, 30 mL) on postoperative sore throat due to LMA use.
