Caring for Hindu patients at the end-of-life: A narrative review.

Objectives: This paper reviews the existing literature to identify specific challenges that may arise in the context of providing palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care for Hindu patients in the physical, psychological, and spiritual domains. We offer practical strategies where appropriate to mitigate some of these challenges. We review how the Hindu faith impacts EOL decision-making, including the role of the family in decision-making, completion of advance directives, pain management, and decisions around artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

An Ergonomic Risk Assessment of Ophthalmology Residents Using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) Scale.

Background: The healthcare industry has one of the highest rates of work-related injuries. Ophthalmologists are at particularly high risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are often the result of repetitive movements, such as performing slit lamp examinations. Previous studies used the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) scale to determine the ergonomic risk of a particular task.

Do Not Fall for This; Diagnostic Challenges in Orbital Floor Fractures With Extraocular Muscle Entrapment.

Extraocular muscles that are entrapped in orbital fracture sites require emergent surgical treatment. Muscle entrapment can present with subtle findings or mimic other conditions, contributing to delays in diagnosis. Here, we present two cases of extraocular muscle entrapment that were not immediately identified.

A Rare Case of Vomiting-Induced Retrobulbar Hemorrhage.

Retrobulbar hemorrhage may result in sudden accumulation of blood in the retrobulbar space which can lead to an orbital compartment syndrome. This potentially blinding condition is characterized by a rapid increase in intra-orbital pressure. While most commonly associated with orbital trauma, it may rarely occur with Valsalva events in patients on anticoagulants.

Orbital apex inflammation: a curious case of COVID-19.

A 25-year-old man presented to an urgent care facility with sudden loss of vision in his right eye, diplopia, and anosmia. He tested positive by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Nine days later, he presented at our emergency department, at which time ophthalmic examination revealed reduced visual acuity in the right eye, with poor color vision and a relative afferent pupillary defect.

Access to Family Planning Services Following Natural Disasters and Pandemics: A Review of the English Literature.

Background: When natural disasters strike, there is a sudden decrease in access to care due to infrastructure loss and displacement. A pandemic has the similar ability to acutely limit access to care. The relationship between decreased access to care and natural disasters has been previously explored.

A CURE for Meat: Comparing Bacterial Contaminants on Different Ground Beef Sources Emphasizes Process of Science and Quantitative Reasoning.

To broaden and emphasize the educational benefits of research to more biology majors in a course setting, we developed and assessed a microbiology-focused course-based undergraduate research experience that utilizes culture-based bacterial enumeration to compare contamination present on different ground beef sources (conventional vs. organic). During the final 3 weeks of the quarter, students learned and practiced common microbiology techniques like dilution math, selective and differential media-based identification, and statistical analysis to evaluate data and test hypotheses.
