We compared the trophic niches of freshwater sculpins Cottus spp. with those of other co-habiting forage fishes in two groups of boreal lakes with distinct habitats and fish communities. Near North Lakes (45° 00' to 47° 30' N) were deeper, stratified and contained lake trout Salvelinus namaycush as the apex piscivore, whereas Far North Lakes (51° 10' to 52° 20' N) were shallower, did not stratify and contained pike Esox lucius and walleye Sander vitreus as the apex piscivores.

Materials And Methods: Two SCCHN multi-analyte cohorts were utilized, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Chicago Head and Neck Genomics (CHGC) cohort. A well-established chemokine signature classified SCCHN tumors into high and low CD8+ T-cell inflamed phenotypes (TCIP-H, TCIP-L respectively).

Algal biofuel has yet to realize its potential as a commercial and sustainable bioenergy source, largely due to the challenge of maximizing and sustaining biomass production with respect to energetic and material inputs in large-scale cultivation. Arthroplasty infection rates in fractured neck of femur: single vs dual antibiotic cement.

Introduction: Mortality rates following hip arthroplasty range between 10% and 40% after 12 months. A higher rate is attributed to postoperative complications, of which surgical site infection is one of the most significant. In an effort to reduce surgical site infection following arthroplasty, antibiotics can be added to the cement used.

Financial Incentives to Increase Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation Among Low-Socioeconomic Status Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objectives: This study sought to examine the efficacy of financial incentives to increase Medicaid patient participation in and completion of cardiac rehabilitation (CR).

Background: Participation in CR reduces morbidity, mortality, and hospitalizations while improving quality of life. Lower-socioeconomic status (SES) patients are much less likely to attend and complete CR, despite being at increased risk for recurrent cardiovascular events.

Effects of the microbicide ceragenin CSA-13 on and properties of Bacillus subtilis spores prepared on two very different media.

Aims: To determine how the microbicide ceragenin-13 (CSA-13) kills Bacillus subtilis spores prepared on growth or sporulation media, and these spores' properties.

Methods And Results: Spores made on Luria broth (LB) growth or double-strength Schaeffer's-glucose (2xSG) sporulation plates found that spores made on LB plates have coat defects as evidenced by their lower hypochlorite resistance, faster germination with dodecylamine and slower germination with Ca -dipicolinic acid (CaDPA) than 2xSG plate spores. CSA-13 triggered CaDPA release from spores, an early step in germination, but only well at 70°C and better with spores made on LB than on 2xSG plates.

Use of ceragenins as a potential treatment for urinary tract infections.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections. High recurrence rates and the increasing antibiotic resistance among uropathogens constitute a large social and economic problem in current public health. We assumed that combination of treatment that includes the administration ceragenins (CSAs), will reinforce the effect of antimicrobial LL-37 peptide continuously produced by urinary tract epithelial cells.

High-affinity anti-glycan antibodies: challenges and strategies.

High-affinity binding of antibodies provides for increased specificity and usually higher effector functions in vivo. This goal, well documented in cancer immunotherapy, is very relevant to vaccines as well, and has particularly significant application toward glycan antigens. The inability to elicit high-affinity antibodies has limited potential applications of glycan-based immunogens, giving rise to insufficient population coverage due to low titers and short duration of protection.

Incidence and predictors of postoperative ileus after loop ileostomy closure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Postoperative ileus (POI) is regarded as the most clinically significant morbidity following loop ileostomy closure; however, its incidence remains poorly understood. Our objective was therefore to determine the pooled incidence of POI after loop ileostomy closure and identify risk factors associated with its development.

Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE (via Ovid and PubMed), Embase, the Cochrane Library, Biosis Previews, and Scopus to identify studies reporting the incidence of POI in patients who underwent loop ileostomy closure.

Purpose: Clinical interventions in programs such as cardiac rehabilitation (CR) are guided by clinical characteristics of participating patients. This study describes changes in CR participant characteristics over 20 yr.

Methods: To examine changes in patient characteristics over time, we analyzed data from 1996 to 2015 (n = 5396) garnered from a systematically and prospectively gathered database.

Introduction: Drug treatment for cancer has changed dramatically over the past decade with many new drugs often with multiple applications. More recently, the detailed pathway for approval from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK has been simplified. To explore how these changes have impacted on systemic anti-cancer therapy tumour site-specific prescribing and workload activities, we have reviewed the prescribing records for 2014-2018 in a UK cancer network.

The effect of the American Joint Committee on Cancer eighth edition on breast cancer staging and prognostication.

Introduction: Breast cancer staging has been developed to quantify prognosis and guide treatment. The American Joint Committee on Cancer eighth edition manual (AJCC8) departed from traditional anatomic staging by incorporating biological factors such as grade, hormone and HER2 receptor status into a novel prognostic staging model. The aim of this study was to externally validate AJCC8 prognostic staging.

Negligible Role for Deletion Mediated by cDC1 in CD8 T Cell Tolerance.

Deletion of CD8 T cells by dendritic cells (DCs) is recognized as a critical mechanism of immune tolerance to self-antigens. Although DC-mediated peripheral deletion of autoreactive CD8 T cells has been demonstrated using T cells reactive to model Ags, its role in shaping the naturally occurring polyclonal CD8 T cell repertoire has not been defined. Using mice lacking cross-presenting CD8α and CD103 DCs (also known as type 1 conventional [cDC1]), we demonstrate that peripheral deletion of CD8 T cells reactive to a model tissue Ag is dependent on cDC1.

Complex societies precede moralizing gods throughout world history.

The origins of religion and of complex societies represent evolutionary puzzles. The 'moralizing gods' hypothesis offers a solution to both puzzles by proposing that belief in morally concerned supernatural agents culturally evolved to facilitate cooperation among strangers in large-scale societies. Although previous research has suggested an association between the presence of moralizing gods and social complexity, the relationship between the two is disputed, and attempts to establish causality have been hampered by limitations in the availability of detailed global longitudinal data.
