Oral mucosal Langerhans cells express DR and DQ antigens.

The expression of the Class II antigens HLA-DR and HLA-DQ in human oral mucosa was examined in health and in the presence of inflammation. DQ antigens were detected on dendritic intra-epithelial cells which expressed the Langerhans cells (LC) phenotype T6+, DR+. In healthy gingiva, DR and DQ were co-expressed on Langerhans cells, whereas in an experimental gingivitis (day 8), more LC expressed DR than DQ.

Characteristics of lipopolysaccharide interaction with human peripheral-blood monocytes.

The interaction between radioiodinated lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli 0111:B4 (125I-LPS) and human peripheral-blood monocytes was studied. The association of 125I-LPS with monocytes at 37 degrees C appeared to depend on binding to the cell membrane with subsequent internalization of the molecule, and was not saturable with time (up to 2 h) or 125I-LPS concentration (up to 10 micrograms/ml). There was no apparent difference in the behaviour of unlabelled LPS and 125I-LPS with respect to monocyte association.

Dose-dependent reduction of lipopolysaccharide pyrogenicity by polymyxin B.

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria are potent pyrogens in mammals. Polymyxin B (PB), a cationic polypeptide antibiotic, binds lipid A, the active moiety of LPS, with high affinity and abrogates several biological responses to LPS. We studied the effect of PB on pyrogenicity of purified LPS from E.

Epididymitis Caused by Brucella ovis in a Southern Ontario Sheep Flock.

Epididymitis was diagnosed in three rams in a commercial sheep flock in southern Ontario. The affected rams had palpably enlarged epididymides and two rams had semen which contained inflammatory cells and was of poor quality. Serum compliment fixation titers for Brucella ovis were 1:20, 1:80 and 1:90.

T-lymphocyte subset changes in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Immunocytochemical techniques using monoclonal antibodies directed against T-lymphocyte surface antigens (OKT3, OKT4, and OKT8) were used to investigate changes in the T-cell subpopulations throughout the natural time course of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). All lesions contained large numbers of OKT3-positive T cells. Preulcerative lesions were characterized by many OKT4-positive inducer/helper cells and few OKT8-positive suppressor/cytotoxic cells (T4:T8 approximately equal to 2:1).

Reversibility of the stabilization effect of sodium molybdate on uterine estrogen and progesterone receptors of the vervet monkey.

Sodium molybdate affected the stability of vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops pygerythrus) uterine estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors. Yields of receptors were invariably higher (20-40%) when cytosols were prepared in the presence of 10mM sodium molybdate. No changes were observed in the binding affinities for the natural ligands as reflected in dissociation constants.

Infertility in a ram associated with a knobbed acrosome abnormality of the spermatozoa.

A yearling Rambouillet ram with an asymmetrical scrotum was examined for potential breeding soundness prior to use in a synchronized mating program in a purebred flock of 20 ewes. Initial sperm cell evaluation revealed 78% knobbed acrosomes associated with few other abnormalities of the head and midpiece. Use of the ram resulted in no conception in one group of ten synchronized ewes.

The effect of season and technique on synchronized and induced estrus and the induction of lambing in the ewe in a commercial setting.

At 40 day intervals, groups of 87 to 142 commercial ewes of mixed breeding were subjected to a 5 day breeding period, following one of three estrus inducing or synchronizing treatments (intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate) for 12 days with (progestin P.M.S.

Pregnancy diagnosis and assessment of fetal numbers in the ewe in a commercial setting.

Jugular plasma progesterone concentrations were used to accurately predict open ewes (96 +/- 3%) in early pregnancy, but they less accurately predicted subsequent lambing especially during the late breeding season and most of the seasonal anestrus. Respiratory activities of subsarcolemmal and intermyofibrillar mitochondrial populations isolated from denervated and control rat soleus muscles.

Ultraturrax and Nagarse released populations of mitochondria isolated from control and day 21 denervated rat soleus muscle were characterized with respect to their oxidative phosphorylation, ADP translocase and ATPase activities. Both Ultraturrax and Nagarse released mitochondrial populations displayed lower capacities for oxidative phosphorylation; lower ADP translocase activities and higher Mg2+ stimulated ATPase activities than their corresponding controls. For both the denervated and control states, the Nagarse-released mitochondrial populations displayed significantly higher respiratory activities than the Ultraturrax released fractions.

Ca2+-uptake properties of two populations of mitochondria from normal and denervated rat soleus muscle.

Ultraturrax- and Nagarse-released populations of mitochondria were characterized with respect to their Ca2+-uptake activities (i) by means of the indirect polarographic technique and (ii) directly by the 45Ca Ruthenium Red-quench method of Reed & Bygrave [(1974) Biochem. J. 140, 143-155].

Clinical microbiological, and histological manifestations of Streptobacillus moniliformis-induced arthritis in mice.

Intravenous inoculation of Streptobacillus moniliformis into mice resulted in an infection in which the predominant feature was progressive polyarthritis that rendered some joints immobile within 6 months. No migration of arthritis from joint to joint or remission and exacerbation were apparent. Viable organisms were apparently removed by the host from blood, liver, and spleen within 28 days post inoculation but persisted in joints for approximately 6 months in some animals.
