Anticipatory Violence and Health Among Black Adults in the United States.

This study analyzes the relationship between anticipatory community and police violence and health outcomes including mental and physical well-being, sleep problems, and functional disability. Using data from a nationally representative survey of 3015 self-identified Black and African American adults in the USA collected in 2023, findings from a series of regression analyses reveal that anticipating community violence is linked to poorer self-rated health and increased sleep problems. Anticipatory police violence is associated with poorer physical health and sleep disturbances.

Agency Nurse Usage of Infusion Interoperability: Identifying Barriers and Improving Workflows.

Over the past several years, hospitals have utilized agency staffing to combat staffing shortages. Increased use of agency staffing presented an opportunity for implementation of an education project related to the potential variance in practice of permanent staffing, specifically with the use of infusion interoperability in the inpatient setting at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center St Margaret hospital. Discussion around variables causing agency nurse setbacks with utilizing infusion interoperability while trying to meet the required standard laid the groundwork for this project.

Healthy at Home for COPD: An Integrated Digital Monitoring, Treatment, and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Intervention.

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Frequent exacerbations result in higher use of emergency services and hospitalizations, leading to poor patient outcomes and high costs.

Objective: Demonstrate the feasibility of a multimodal, digitally enhanced remote monitoring, treatment, and tele-pulmonary rehabilitation intervention among patients with COPD.

A Disaster Response Complex for training of emergency responders in the Northwest United States.

The Disaster Response Complex (DRC) is a year-round training complex that specializes in training emergency responders in realistic indoor and outdoor environments. The outdoor site is comprised of 3 acres of secured customizable space for various exercises. The indoor site is designed to include an indoor facility with a full-size city street, complete with storefronts and motor vehicles that can be configured for emergency response training exercises, and a train or subway station where mockups of derailments can be simulated.

Sexuality Minority Status, Victimization, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

Prior research suggests that sexual minority status is related to victimization, mental health issues, and substance use. However, few studies have sought to connect these relationships in a way supported by theory, and fewer have utilized probability and/or nationally representative samples. The current study seeks to test the relationships among these variables, guided by general strain theory (GST).

Rationale and Design of Healthy at Home for COPD: an Integrated Remote Patient Monitoring and Virtual Pulmonary Rehabilitation Pilot Study.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, costly, and morbid condition. Pulmonary rehabilitation, close monitoring, and early intervention during acute exacerbations of symptoms represent a comprehensive approach to improve outcomes, but the optimal means of delivering these services is uncertain. Logistical, financial, and social barriers to providing healthcare through face-to-face encounters, paired with recent developments in technology, have stimulated interest in exploring alternative models of care.

Systemically administered wound-homing peptide accelerates wound healing by modulating syndecan-4 function.

CAR (CARSKNKDC) is a wound-homing peptide that recognises angiogenic neovessels. Here we discover that systemically administered CAR peptide has inherent ability to promote wound healing: wounds close and re-epithelialise faster in CAR-treated male mice. CAR promotes keratinocyte migration in vitro.

Illness-Promoting Psychological Processes in Children and Adolescents with Functional Neurological Disorder.

Previous studies suggest that subjective distress in children with functional neurological disorder (FND) is associated with stress-system dysregulation and modulates aberrant changes in neural networks. The current study documents illness-promoting psychological processes in 76 children with FND (60 girls and 16 boys, aged 10.00-17.

Reciprocal Neighborhood Dynamics in Gun Violence Exposure, Community Health, and Concentrated Disadvantage in One Hundred US Cities.

Gun violence imparts a tremendous human and financial toll on local communities. Researchers have documented extensive mental and physical health consequences of generalized violence exposure but few studies have analyzed the particular impacts of gun violence on community well-being using nationally comprehensive data. We leverage a unique database of almost 16,000 neighborhoods in 100 US cities (2014-2019) to examine how year-over-year rates of gun violence correspond to overall neighborhood well-being and three aspects of community health: (1) health behaviors, (2) physical and mental health status, and (3) health prevention efforts.

Low language capacity in childhood: A systematic review of prevalence estimates.

Background And Aims: Epidemiological studies have provided invaluable insight into the origin and impact of low language skills in childhood and adolescence. However, changing terminology and diagnostic guidelines have contributed to variable estimations of the prevalence of developmental language difficulties. The aim of this review was to profile the extent and variability of low language prevalence estimates through a systematic review of epidemiological literature.

Chaplains of Color: Histories and Practices.

From the gallows and fields of war to the street and bedside, chaplains of color have been present and instrumental in providing spiritual and emotional support in public and private settings across the United States. Their histories and experiences are not well documented and integrated into the field of spiritual care and chaplaincy, a field often understood as predominantly White, male, and Christian. This article introduces this special issue by offering historical context-particularly for Black chaplains-and naming the key themes that weave through the articles included.

Building the foundation for a community-generated national research blueprint for inherited bleeding disorders: research priorities to transform the care of people with hemophilia.

Background: Decades of research have transformed hemophilia from severely limiting children's lives to a manageable disorder compatible with a full, active life, for many in high-income countries. The direction of future research will determine whether exciting developments truly advance health equity for all people with hemophilia (PWH). National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) and American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network conducted extensive inclusive all-stakeholder consultations to identify the priorities of people with inherited bleeding disorders and those who care for them.

Race, Neighborhood Opportunity, and Life-Threatening Complications in Children With Cancer: A Moderated Mediation Approach.

Background: Racial disparities exist in the incidence and severity of life-threatening complications of childhood cancer and its treatment. Little research has been conducted to examine the sociocultural pathways that are underlying these inequities.

Objective: This study examined the association between race and complications and the intermediary pathway of a child's access to opportunity in the neighborhood environment.

An Isochroman Analog of CD3254 and Allyl-, Isochroman-Analogs of NEt-TMN Prove to Be More Potent Retinoid-X-Receptor (RXR) Selective Agonists Than Bexarotene.

Bexarotene is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL); however, its use provokes or disrupts other retinoid-X-receptor (RXR)-dependent nuclear receptor pathways and thereby incites side effects including hypothyroidism and raised triglycerides. Two novel bexarotene analogs, as well as three unique CD3254 analogs and thirteen novel NEt-TMN analogs, were synthesized and characterized for their ability to induce RXR agonism in comparison to bexarotene (). Several analogs in all three groups possessed an isochroman ring substitution for the bexarotene aliphatic group.

Emergency Department Communication in Persons Living With Dementia and Care Partners: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: To synthesize published research exploring emergency department (ED) communication strategies and decision-making with persons living with dementia (PLWD) and their care partners as the basis for a multistakeholder consensus conference to prioritize future research.

Exploring the Insecticidal Potential of Gaseous and Aqueous Ozone to Control Spotted-Wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Over the last decade, numerous companies have marketed aqueous ozone sprayers for insect and disease management, but little to no data has been published on their efficacy. Thus, we evaluated the potential of both gaseous and aqueous ozone as a potential preharvest insecticide against the adult life stage of the invasive fruit pest, spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura). Gaseous ozone was applied at two dosages, 14,600 and 30,100 ppmv, for varying durations and the respective concentration-time (CT) exposure responses were modeled for sex-specific mortalities recorded at 0, 24, 48, and 72 h following treatment.

Growing Old in the Bible Belt: Resources for Aging LGBT Adults Living in the South.

There has been an increase in the literature about LGBT older adults in recent years; however, there is a need for further sociological quantitative research examining the impact of geographic region on LGBT aging. Utilizing data from a nationwide survey, this study focuses on the availability of LGBT-specific resources for LGBT aging adults living in the South. We examine the effects of community type and sociodemographics on the availability of LGBT-specific resources as well as the type of resources available.

Hospice Referral in Advanced Cancer in New Jersey.

The need for hospice care is increasing in the United States, but insufficient lengths of stay and disparity in access to care continue. Few studies have examined the relationship between the presence of symptoms and hospice referral. The study measured the association between hospice referral and demographic characteristics and the presence of pain and depression in a cohort of people hospitalized with metastatic cancer in New Jersey in 2018.

Palliative Care Use in Advanced Cancer in the Garden State.

Background: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Patients with metastatic cancer have a high symptom burden. Major global and domestic cancer care recommendations advise integration of palliative care services for these patients.

Rapid onset functional tic-like behaviours in children and adolescents during COVID-19: Clinical features, assessment and biopsychosocial treatment approach.

Aim: To report the prevalence and clinical characteristics of children with rapid onset functional tic-like behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Single centre, retrospective cohort study of children (<18 years) referred to the tic clinic from January 2018 to July 2021. We calculate the prevalence of newly diagnosed functional tics, and compare the clinical features to chronic tic disorder/Tourette syndrome (CTD/TS).
