Schools continue to represent one of the main settings that guarantee health promotion interventions, as it has been widely demonstrated in numerous fields that diet and eating habits are shaped in the early stages of life and maintained into adulthood. Through the food education promotion project, "Healthy Snack", implemented by the Prevention Department of the Local Health Authority ULSS 1 Dolomiti, the interventions carried out by healthcare workers have been evaluated over time to measure their effectiveness in terms of changes in eating habits considered incorrect, with a particular focus on snacks eaten at school.

Lysozyme, especially the one obtained from hen's egg white, continues to show new pharmacological properties. The fact that only a few of these properties can be translated into therapeutic applications is due to the lack of suitable clinical studies. However, this lack cannot hide the evidence that is emerging from scientific research.

Tumor growth is driven by continued cellular growth and proliferation. Cyclin-dependent kinase 7's (CDK7) role in activating mitotic CDKs and global gene expression makes it therefore an attractive target for cancer therapies. However, what makes cancer cells particularly sensitive to CDK7 inhibition (CDK7i) remains unclear.

In the 100 years since its discovery, lysozyme has become an important molecule, both as model for studies in different fields and as a candidate for the therapy of various pathological conditions. Of the dozens of known lysozymes, in this review we focus on one in particular, lysozyme extracted from hen egg white (HEWL), and its interaction with the immune system when it is administered orally. Experimental data show that there is an axis that directs immune system activation from GALT (gut-associated lymphoid tissue) and the intestinal lymphocyte clusters.

Ensuring safe meals with suitable hygienic-sanitary and nutritional features is an essential requirement to guarantee health in different settings. This study aims to evaluate the compliance of collective catering menus adopted in both school canteens and healthcare facilities in a regional area where specific guidelines have been issued, assessing many matters from food weight to single courses and from the use of wholegrain pasta and bread to the rotation of seasonal fruit and vegetables. Overall, 85 menus, edited by freelance professionals and endorsed by the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service staff of the Local Health Authority, were assessed from 2018 to 2022, highlighting critical issues potentially attributable at a local level to the lack of complete knowledge of the existence of guidelines and official reference documents among nutrition professionals.

COVID-19, the severe acute respiratory syndrome, is one of the major emergencies that have affected health care systems. Drugs and oxygen are only partially effective in saving lives in patients with severe COVID-19, and the most important protection from death is vaccination. The widespread use of COVID-19 adenovirus-based vaccines has provided evidence for the occurrence of rare venous thrombotic events including cerebral venous thrombosis and splanchnic venous thrombosis in recipients of Vaxzevria and Jcovden vaccines and the review focus on them.

The expansion of metal-based complexes in the last 20 years has been very intense and many metals have been involved. Among the many compounds studied, the ruthenium-based complex NAMI-A embodies the unique paradigm of the ability to selectively inhibiting and preventing the development and the growth of distant metastases originating from solid tumors in all the tumor models on which it has been tested. An activity that can be detected only in vivo since the compound is virtually free of measurable direct cell cytotoxicity in vitro.

The involvement of viruses and SARS-CoV-2 in autoimmune diseases is well known. The recent demonstration that ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Covid-19 (AstraZeneca) vaccine (ChA) favors the production of anti-platelet factor 4 (anti-PF4) antibodies, blood clots, and thrombocytopenia raises the question of whether other anti-CoViD-19 vaccines favor the same patterns of events. We assessed the frequency of severe adverse events (SAEs) documented in the EudraVigilance European database up to April 16, 2021 related to thrombocytopenia, bleeding, and blood clots in recipients of ChA compared to that of recipients of the BNT162b2 Covid-19 (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine (BNT).

The search for alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture has focused on the use of vaccines for immune-prophylaxis. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility and characteristics of chitosan-alginate microparticles for the oral delivery of immune-prophylactics to finfish. The microparticles, which incorporate fluorescent-labelled lysozyme, were produced by spray-drying method; their structural properties and uptake from the gastrointestinal tract of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were assessed by microscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Skeletal muscle aging leads to a loss of mass and function due to changes in protein expression, organelle structure, metabolism, and neural communication.
  • Different muscle fibers, which vary in Myosin Heavy Chains and metabolic properties, work together to meet functional demands, making muscle architecture crucial for its performance.
  • Research on aging in mice showed an increase in fast-contracting fibers and oxidative capacity in certain fibers, alongside reduced blood supply and development of tubular aggregates, indicating that aging selectively alters muscle fiber types.

We recently showed that the treatment with Resveratrol (RES) contrasts the effects of ageing on the skeletal muscle (SKM), reduces the appearance of tubular aggregates (TAs), and improves the fatigue resistance. Since fatigue resistance depends on the SKM capillary network, and RES has been described to improve vascularisation, we analysed the SKM capillarization in naturally ageing C57BL/6J male mice, fed with 0.04% RES in the diet for 6 months, which showed a better fatigue resistance in a previous work.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 7 (CDK7), along with cyclin H and MAT1, forms the CDK-activating complex (CAK), which directs progression through the cell cycle via T-loop phosphorylation of cell cycle CDKs. CAK is also a component of the general transcription factor, TFIIH. CDK7-mediated phosphorylation of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) at active gene promoters permits transcription.

Article Synopsis
  • Lysozyme is a key player in the innate immune system, known for its antibacterial properties and emerging anti-inflammatory effects, which are still being understood.
  • A study using RNA sequencing on U937 monocyte cells revealed that lysozyme alters the expression of genes related to the TNF-α/IL-1β inflammatory pathway.
  • The findings suggest that even low concentrations of lysozyme can significantly impact gene regulation, highlighting its potential for therapeutic use in managing inflammation.

The aim is to introduce and characterize a new experimental demonstrative model contributing to the increase of measurement accuracy, in terms of minimum detectable activity (MDA) and background reduction, for the analysis of samples having low concentrations in tritium and radiocarbon on Quantulus 1220. The clue is related to the qualitative and quantitative differences between tritium and carbon-14 inventories of the pulp used to manufacture the cups involved in noncatalytic combustion of samples by flame oxidation method. The quality of the experimental results depends on the temporal origin of the wood from which the pulp/cellulose was extracted/purified, the specific inventory contributing to the threshold level of the MDA for the beta-emitting radionuclide to be investigated.

Targeting specific tumor metabolic needs represents an actively investigated therapeutic strategy to bypass tumor resistance mechanisms. In this study, we describe an original approach to impact the cancer metabolism by exploiting the redox properties of a ruthenium organometallic compound. This organometallic complex induced p53-independent cytotoxicity and reduced size and vascularization of patients-derived tumor explants that are resistant to platinum drugs.

Recent reports indicate that some cancer types are especially sensitive to transcription inhibition, suggesting that targeting the transcriptional machinery provides new approaches to cancer treatment. Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)7 is necessary for transcription, and acts by phosphorylating the C-terminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II (PolII) to enable transcription initiation. CDK7 additionally regulates the activities of a number of transcription factors, including estrogen receptor (ER)-α.

Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be a powerful approach to visualize the exact distribution of drugs at the sub-cellular level. In this work, we exploit this approach to identify the distribution and localisation of the organometallic ruthenium(II)-arene drug Ru(η⁶-C₆H₅Me)(pta)Cl₂, termed RAPTA-T, in MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. These cell lines have been chosen because the former cell lines are highly invasive and resistant to most chemotherapeutic agents and the latter ones are very sensitive to hormonal-based therapies.

Solid tumours are constituted of tumour cells, healthy cells recruited from the host tissues and soluble factors released by both these cell types. The present investigation examines the capacity of co-cultures between the HCEC colon epithelial cells and the HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells (mimicking the primary site of tumour growth) and between IHH hepatocytes and the HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells (metastatic site) to influence the effects of NAMI-A (imidazolium trans-imidazoledimethylsulphoxidetetrachloro ruthenate) on the tumour cells themselves. The growth of HCT-116 cells is significantly influenced when the cancer cells are sown on a monolayer of HCEC.
