Background: Our goal was to elucidate the differences in degree of technical difficulty of thyroidectomy in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Methods: Charts of adult patients who had undergone thyroidectomy were reviewed. Patients with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT) or Graves' Disease (GD) were individually compared to a control group of patients with early stage malignancy or goiter.

Embracing a 'new normal': the construction of biographical renewal in young adults' narratives of living with a stoma.

Stoma surgery can be a life-changing procedure due to bodily changes and related psychological responses. Despite previous literature identifying unique challenges for young adults living with a long-term condition, no studies have explored the biographical implications of stoma formation. Drawing on interviews with 13 young adults, aged 18-29 years, with a stoma resulting from inflammatory bowel disease, this article aims to generate new theoretical insights in understanding the process of biographical (re)construction and the wider implications of stoma formation among this group.

"I put it in my head that the supplement would help me": Open-placebo improves exercise performance in female cyclists.

This study investigated the effect of open-placebo on cycling time-trial (TT) performance. Twenty-eight trained female cyclists completed a 1-km cycling TT following a control session or an open-placebo intervention. The intervention consisted of an individual presentation, provided by a medic, in which the concept of open-placebo was explained to the participant, before she ingested two red and white capsules containing flour; 15 min later, they performed the TT.

Paratuberculosis and bovine tuberculosis are two mycobacterial diseases of ruminants which have a considerable impact on livestock health, welfare, and production. These are chronic "iceberg" diseases which take years to manifest and in which many subclinical cases remain undetected. Suggested biomarkers to detect infected or diseased animals are numerous and include cytokines, peptides, and expression of specific genes; however, these do not provide a strong correlation to disease.

Carnosine is an abundant histidine-containing dipeptide in human skeletal muscle and formed by beta-alanine and L-histidine. It performs various physiological roles during exercise and has attracted strong interest in recent years with numerous investigations focused on increasing its intramuscular content to optimize its potential ergogenic benefits. Oral beta-alanine ingestion increases muscle carnosine content although large variation in response to supplementation exists and the amount of ingested beta-alanine converted into muscle carnosine appears to be low.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) is a constitutively active serine-threonine kinase that regulates numerous signaling pathways and has been implicated in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases. Alcohol exposure increases GSK-3β (ser9) phosphorylation (pGSK-3β); however, few studies have investigated whether GSK-3 regulates the positive reinforcing effects of alcohol, which drive repetitive drug use. To address this goal, male C57BL/6J mice were trained to lever press on a fixed-ratio 4 schedule of sweetened alcohol or sucrose-only reinforcement in operant conditioning chambers.

A CRISPR platform for targeted in vivo screens identifies Toxoplasma gondii virulence factors in mice.

Genome-wide CRISPR screening is a powerful tool to identify genes required under selective conditions. However, the inherent scale of genome-wide libraries can limit their application in experimental settings where cell numbers are restricted, such as in vivo infections or single cell analysis. The use of small scale CRISPR libraries targeting gene subsets circumvents this problem.

Endocuff Vision is safe to use for dysplasia surveillance in patients with ulcerative colitis: a feasibility study.

Endocuff Vision improves adenoma detection rates in patients without inflammatory bowel disease. This study aimed to investigate the safety and feasibility of Endocuff Vision-assisted high-definition white light endoscopy (HDWLE) with dye-spray chromoendoscopy for detection of dysplasia in patients with ulcerative colitis. Patients with clinically inactive ulcerative colitis due for dysplasia surveillance were recruited.

Efforts to reduce the global TB burden are hindered by the lack of simple, reliable non-sputum based diagnostics. To date studies investigating the biomarker potential of circulating host proteins and mRNA have not shown sufficient diagnostic utility. Recently, there has been increasing interest in circulating miRNA as a biomarker of TB disease.

It is widely assumed that the strongest case for permitting non-medical sex selection is where parents aim at family balance. This piece criticizes one representative attempt to justify sex selection for family balance. Kluge (2007) assumes that some couples may seek sex selection because they hold discriminatory values, but this need not impugn those who merely have preferences, without evaluative commitments, for a particular sex.

The Effects of Early Parental Death and Grief on Interpersonal Functioning and Alexithymia in Adults.

Background: Empirical evidence suggests that individuals who have experienced the death of a parent early in life endorse interpersonal difficulties in adulthood. However, little is known about the underlying experiences that may lead to such distress. The current study examined whether individuals who experienced early parental death would endorse greater levels of alexithymia than individuals raised in intact families, and whether early parental death and interpersonal distress were linked through alexithymia and grief.

Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) migration in Australian waters using passive acoustic monitoring.

The fin whale is a globally endangered species and is listed as threatened in Australia, however no peer-reviewed studies are available to indicate the migratory movements of the species in Australian waters. This study uses passive acoustic monitoring as a tool to identify the migratory movements of fin whales in Australian waters. Sampling was conducted from eight locations around Australia between 2009 and 2017, providing a total of 37 annual migratory records.

Injectable gels that support load are desirable for restoring the mechanical properties of degenerated load-bearing tissue. As these gels become increasingly sophisticated, the need to remotely image them and monitor their swelling increases. However, imaging such gels and monitoring their swelling using noninvasive means is challenging.

Accuracy of the NSQIP risk calculator for predicting complications following adrenalectomy.

Purpose: Adrenalectomy is performed to treat functional pathology and remove tumors of malignant concern. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) risk calculator predicts 30-day complications and length of stay following index surgical procedures. We assess whether this tool accurately predicts complications following adrenalectomy procedures at a tertiary care academic medical center.

Matching treatment options for risk sub-groups in musculoskeletal pain: a consensus groups study.

Background: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain represents a considerable worldwide healthcare burden. This study aimed to gain consensus from practitioners who work with MSK pain patients, on the most appropriate primary care treatment options for subgroups of patients based on prognostic risk of persistent disabling pain. Agreement was sought on treatment options for the five most common MSK pain presentations: back, neck, knee, shoulder and multisite pain, across three risk subgroups: low, medium and high.

Community-Based Learning Collaboratives and Participant Reports of Interprofessional Collaboration, Barriers to, and Utilization of Child Trauma Services.

Given the high prevalence and severe consequences of child trauma, effective implementation strategies are needed to increase the availability and utilization of evidence-based child trauma services. One promising strategy, the Community-Based Learning Collaborative (CBLC), augments traditional Learning Collaborative activities with a novel set of community-focused strategies. This prospective, observational study examined pre-to post-changes in CBLC participant reports of interprofessional collaboration (IPC), barriers to, and utilization of evidence-based child trauma treatment in their communities.

Using green emitting pH-responsive nanogels to report environmental changes within hydrogels: a nanoprobe for versatile sensing.

Remotely reporting the local environment within hydrogels using inexpensive laboratory techniques has excellent potential to improve our understanding of the nanometer-scale changes that cause macroscopic swelling or deswelling. Whilst photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is a popular method for such studies this approach commonly requires bespoke and time-consuming synthesis to attach fluorophores which may leave toxic residues. A promising and more versatile alternative is to use a pre-formed nanogel probe that contains a donor/acceptor pair and then "dope" that into the gel during gel assembly.

Expression of factor V by resident macrophages boosts host defense in the peritoneal cavity.

Macrophages resident in different organs express distinct genes, but understanding how this diversity fits into tissue-specific features is limited. Here, we show that selective expression of coagulation factor V (FV) by resident peritoneal macrophages in mice promotes bacterial clearance in the peritoneal cavity and serves to facilitate the well-known but poorly understood "macrophage disappearance reaction." Intravital imaging revealed that resident macrophages were nonadherent in peritoneal fluid during homeostasis.

Comparative physiology investigations support a role for histidine-containing dipeptides in intracellular acid-base regulation of skeletal muscle.

Histidine containing dipeptides (HCDs: carnosine, anserine and balenine) have numerous therapeutic and ergogenic properties, but there is a lack of consensus on the mechanistic pathways through which they function. Potential roles include intracellular buffering, neutralisation of reactive species, and calcium regulation. Comparative investigations of the HCD content of various species provide unique insight into their most likely mechanisms of action.
