The interactions of a protein cytochrome c with some selected conventional and ionic liquid surfactants have been investigated at pH7.4 using ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. We used four conventional surfactants - cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), sodium N-dodecanoylsarcosinate (SDDS), and N-decanoyl-N-methylglucamine (Mega 10), and a surface active ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (CMeImCl).

The dark process has been studied in water and also in a number of protic and aprotic solvents, and aqueous solutions of ionic liquids, pluronics, reverse micelles and salt.

The compound was characterized by various analytical and spectroscopic methods, and its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were used to understand the electronic structure of the complex and nature of the electronic transitions observed in UV-vis spectra.

Their adsorption at the interface in relation to self-association in solution has been examined in both pure and mixed states with reference to detailed thermodynamic analysis of their surface chemical and solution behaviors. Their head group differences are responsible for the differences in their properties viz.

Here, first time this is employed for the determination of the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of both ionic and nonionic surfactants using the measurements of UV absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence polarization anisotropy. Results on a number of surfactants have agreed with those evaluated from conductometric, tensiometric and calorimetric methods.
