Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in India. CKD often coexists with heart failure (HF), diabetes, and hypertension. All these comorbidities are risk factors for renal impairment.

A Randomised Controlled Trial Comparing Ketamine Fentanyl for Procedural Sedation in the Emergency Department for Adults with Isolated Extremity Injury.

Introduction: Alleviating pain and anxiety of patients during procedures is an essential skill for an Emergency Physician (EP). Several sedatives and dissociative agents are used for PSA (Procedural Sedation and Analgesia). In this study, we aimed to compare two drugs that is, ketamine and fentanyl for procedural sedation in adults with isolated limb injuries in the Emergency Department (ED).

Evaluation of Long-term Stability of Secondary Alveolar Bone Grafts in Cleft Palate Patients Using Multislice Computed Tomography and Three-Dimensional Printed Models: A Prospective Study.

Aim: Three-dimensional (3D) printed models are contemporary volumetric bone graft assessment technique for secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients. The study aimed at evaluation of long-term stability of iliac autograft in SABG using multislice computed tomography (CT) and 3D-printed model-based volumetric analysis.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-eight patients were included in this prospective clinical study.

Estimation and correlation of serum and salivary glucose and immunoglobulin A levels and salivary candidal carriage in diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

A correlation has been noted between diabetes mellitus (DM) and changes in the oral cavity. The present study aimed to estimate, compare, and correlate serum and salivary glucose and IgA levels and salivary candidal carriage in diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Eighty-eight subjects were categorized into three groups: group 1 (controlled DM; n=27), group 2 (uncontrolled DM; n=32) and group 3 (non-diabetics; n=29).

Evaluation of cystic schwannoma of masticator space - A case report.

Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the neural sheath and occurring in up to 45% of the cases of extracranial neurogenic tumors. Schwannomas of masticator spaces are rare. This article reports the case of an intraoral schwannoma occupying the masseteric and buccal spaces of a 55-year-old woman, for whom detailed imaging investigations were performed, comprising conventional extraoral radiographs, ultrasound, and plain and contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

Hemifacial spasm secondary to vascular loop compression: a rare case report.

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is characterised by brief, persistent, involuntary paroxysmal contractions of the facial muscles innervated by the facial nerve. Broadly its aetiology is portrayed as primary and secondary. Primary HFS is a result of vascular compression of the ipsilateral facial nerve at its root exit zone, and secondary HFS can occur after any injury to the facial nerve from the internal auditory canal to the stylomastoid foramen, which may be a result of a cerebellopontine angle tumour, schwannoma, fusiform aneurysm, or demyelinating lesion such as multiple sclerosis.

"Introducing Modified Dakkak and Bennett Grading System for Indian Food in Oral Submucous Fibrosis": A Dharwad Study.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is one of the "diseases of civilization" because of the large differences in prevalence among races, geographic areas, and individuals at different socioeconomic levels. It is a premalignant condition strongly associated with the habit of chewing areca nuts. This study is to compare the scoring system in relation to the burning sensation of mouth and dysphagia using the visual analog scale (VAS) and Dakkak and Bennett grading system for Indian food, respectively, in OSMF patients.

An unusual case of neural palatal swelling.

Neural tumors in the oral cavity occur both in the soft tissues and in the jaw bones. They occur as painless, smooth surface swelling in the soft tissues of the mouth, exhibiting a slow rate of growth and mild expansion of the cortical plates. Here, we report a rare case of a cellular variant of schwannoma in a young Indian female patient who presented with an asymptomatic nodule in the mid-palatine raphe region of the hard palate, mimicking a fibroma, thus creating a dilemma in the diagnosis.

CHADS-VASc-HSF score - New predictor of severity of coronary artery disease in 2976 patients.

Background: CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores have been used for assessing prognostic risk of thromboembolism in non valvular atrial fibrillation patients. They include similar risk factors for the development of CAD To increase the likelihood of determining CAD severity, the CHA2DS2-VASc-HS and CHA2DS2-VASc-HSF score comprising of hyperlipidemia, smoking and family history respectively in addition to the components of the CHA2DS2-VASc score and male instead of female gender. The aim was to investigate whether these risk scores can be used to predict CAD severity.

Scleroderma and dentistry: Two case reports.

Background: Scleroderma is a chronic connective tissue disorder with unknown etiology. It is characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in the connective tissues causing vascular disturbances which can result in tissue hypoxia. These changes are manifested as atrophy of the skin and/or mucosa, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and internal organs.

Quantification of telomerase activity in normal oral mucosal tissue and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Background And Objective: The role of telomeres and telomerase in oral cancer is an area of much recent interest. The understanding of the role of telomere biology, the end replication problem leading to genomic instability and the reactivation of telomerase, is absolutely critical to our understanding of oral cancer, and more so, to our ability of early diagnosis and developing novel therapies and cancer prevention approaches. The aim of the present study was to quantify telomerase activity (TA) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and normal oral mucosa and assess the role of telomerase as diagnostic and prognostic marker of oral malignancy.

Kaulath, a new fungal fermented food from horse gram.

Horse gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum) is used in the traditional method for treatmentof several health complications. It is also known that fermentation of such substrates yields a number of compounds that enhance the overall activities against several disease states. Solid state fermentation of horse gram using Penicillium camemberti showed an inhibition of pancreatic lipase and alpha glucosidase activities.

Role of Depression, Anxiety and Stress in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus: A Pilot Study.

Context: Lichen planus is a psychosomatic disease. Higher frequency of psychiatric symptoms, poor quality of life, higher level of anxiety and neuroendocrine and immune dysregulations, all these factors, will enhance the exacerbation of the disease.

Aims: The present study was to assess depression, anxiety and stress levels in patients with oral lichen planus.

Sclerotiorin is non-mutagenic and inhibits human PMNL 5-lipoxygenase and platelet aggregation.

Sclerotiorin, isolated from the fermented broth of Penicillium frequentans, exhibited potent inhibition against human polymorphonuclear leukocytes 5-lipoxygenase and human platelet aggregation with a half maximal value 36 μM and 250 μM, respectively. Further, the Ames test has demonstrated the sclerotiorin to be non-mutagenic.

Kabuki Make-up Syndrome - A Case Report with Electromyographic study.

Kabuki make-up syndrome (KMS), also called Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome reported in 1981, is a rare congenital disorder of unknown aetiology. It is know to occur in many other ethnic groups, though initially described in Japan. We report a 24-year-old girl of Asian origin diagnosed with Kabuki syndrome based on characteristic clinical features.

Assessment of condylar changes in patients with temporomandibular joint pain using digital volumetric tomography.

A tyrosinase inhibitor from Aspergillus niger.

Tyrosinase, in the presence of oxygen, is the main culprit in post harvest browning of food products, resulting in the drop in its commercial value. In an effort to seek natural tyrosinase inhibitors for food applications, a screening programme was undertaken. Of the 26 fungal cultures isolated from soil samples of Agumbe forest, India, one isolate S16, identified as Aspergillus niger, gave an inhibition of 84 % against the enzyme.

Hurler syndrome: orofacial, dental, and skeletal findings of a case.

Hurler syndrome is a disorder of mucopolysaccharide metabolism caused due to inherited deficiencies of lysosomal α-l-iduronidase activity. We present a case of a 15-year-old male patient presenting with clinical and laboratory characteristics of the syndrome. A rare combination of skeletal, ophthalmologic, and dental findings was observed in this patient.

Disseminated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting as bilateral salivary gland enlargement: a case report.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) constitutes a group of malignancies those arises from cellular components of lymphoid or extranodal tissues. The head and neck is the most common area for the presentation of these lymphoproliferative disorders. Primary involvement of salivary glands is uncommon.
