A 70-year-old man, who had a laryngeal tumor discovered by otolaryngological examination during admission for suspicion of facial nerve paralysis was found dead in his bed on the seventh hospital day. Clinical doctors aspirated a large amount of mucous sputum from his larynx during their attempt at resuscitation. Although the direct cause of death was clinically unknown, an autopsy revealed an internal type laryngocele, a type of laryngeal cyst, in the right larynx and infarction of the left dorso-lateral portion of the medulla oblongata.

Cytological diagnosis of adrenal cysts is becoming more important, with the increase in cases identified due to the widespread use of imaging modalities. Adrenal cysts have been classified into four main groups: endothelial, epithelial, parasitic, and pseudocyst, with endothelial cysts further classified as lymphangiomatous or angiomatous. We report on a case of adrenal lymphangioma with atypical lymphocytes found in the intraoperative aspirate, suggesting an inconclusive diagnosis, although immunohistochemical study led us to suppose their B-cell origin.

We describe a rare case of a 46-year-old Japanese man with dermatomyositis (DM) and interstitial lung disease who developed spontaneous pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema. Relatively mild myositis, mild elevation of CK values and the absence of anti-Jo-1 antibody were observed and the case was similar to amyopathic DM. Treatment of this patient with oral prednisolone and cyclosporin A (CsA) was effective for the myositis and interstitial lung disease.

An otherwise healthy 85-year-old woman presented with purulent multifocal subcutaneous nodules on the dorsal side of the right forearm and hand. Histopathologic examination of the biopsied specimen showed a subcutaneous granuloma with central abscess and necrosis, consistent with phaeomycotic cyst. Faint brown septate hyphae and moniliform fungal elements were found in the granuloma.

To find new anthelmintics against parasites living in host tissues, we used an in vitro assay to screen isoquinoline alkaloids for nematocidal activity on the larva of dog roundworm, Toxocara canis. To evaluate the efficacy of anthelmintics in vitro, Tsuda et al. previously introduced the concept of Relative Mobility (RM) of Toxocara larvae.

Background: The processes of malignant tumour invasion and metastasis are known to include the destruction of cell stroma and vascular basement membrane. It has been suggested that type IV collagenase degrades type IV collagen, a main component of the basement membrane.

Methods: In our study, type IV collagenase activity in human thyroid tumours was measured by the Liotta method.

Tripartite efflux systems of Gram-negative bacteria that contain an inner membrane transporter belonging to the resistance nodulation division (RND) superfamily can extrude a large variety of structurally diverse compounds. To gain an insight into the molecular mechanisms of substrate recognition by these multidrug resistance (MDR) transporters, we isolated spontaneous mutations that altered the substrate specificity of the MexCD-OprJ pump from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These mutations enabled the pump to extrude the normally non-transported beta-lactam antibiotic carbenicillin.

We examined the nematocidal activity of various isoquinoline alkaloids. The method of evaluating nematocidal activity involved the microscopic examination of the state of larvae after the compound was administered to determine the minimum lethal concentration (MLC). In addition, cytotoxic activity (IC50) was examined using HL-60 culture cells.

Visual pathways of a new mutant of chicken (GSN/1) with hereditary visual impairment were ophthalmologically, electrophysiologically, and histopathologically examined. Clinically, GSN/1 chickens drooped and had decreased locomotor activity. As an indicator of visual acuity, the spatial frequency characteristics of GSN/1 chickens showed poor scores at high frequency.

We examined the effects of isoquinoline alkaloids in vitro in an effort to identify a treatment for Strongyloides stercoralis larva migrans in humans. Infective third-stage larvae of S. ratti and S.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by systemic hamartomas. Although the disease-determining genes TSC1 and TSC2 have been isolated, the molecular pathogenesis of the disease is not understood. We examined cell cycle abnormalities in skin specimens and cultured cells derived from specific lesions of TSC patients with confirmed TSC1 or TSC2 mutations.

We investigated the effects of a 7 day repetitive administration of tetrabenazine (TBZ), which depletes monoamines, on both locomotor behavior and histomorphometrial findings of substantia nigra in rats. These results were compared with the effects of a single dose of TBZ, which is a common paradigm in animal models of depression. A single dose of TBZ causes reversible decrease of voluntary movement and no histological changes.

With the aim of developing therapeutic agents for strongyloidosis, the disease caused by infection with Strongyloides stercoralis, we established a novel assay technique using S. ratti and S. venezuelensis as models for S.

We present the first report of bladder carcinoma that demonstrates a mixture of two distinct histological patterns resembling malignant lymphoma. The patient was a 79-year-old man. One of the histological patterns was a diffuse growth of monomorphic carcinoma cells, and the other was a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, obscuring the carcinoma.

A 65-year-old woman with refractory anaemia who had been treated with systemic corticosteroids for several months developed cryptococcal cellulitis of the right cubital fossa. She was treated empirically for a presumed bacterial cellulitis with little response. Histological examination of debrided tissue revealed Cryptococcus as the causative organism.

A case of malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is reported. Histologically, spindle cell proliferation with remarkable whorl formations was predominant in the tumor. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were diffusely positive for CD117 (c-Kit) and vimentin and partially positive for CD34.

Transradial angiography has recently emerged as an alternative to the transfemoral or transbrachial approach, especially for coronary or cerebral procedures. However, there are few such studies regarding abdominal angiography. In our institution, we performed abdominal angiography and intervention by the transradial arterial method in 42 cases using a 120-cm-long 4 Fr catheter and compared the results with the transfemoral or transbrachial arterial method and examined the usefulness of this technique.

Warthin's tumors are one of the most easily recognizable tumors using light microscopy. However, histopathological diagnosis is difficult in a few cases when characteristic cystic cavities with papillary walling and underlying lymphoid stroma are obscured by reactive changes. We describe a case of an extirpated Warthin's tumor of the right parotid gland which demonstrated extensive necrosis, squamous metaplasia and xanthomatous inflammation.
