Background: Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of schizophrenia. Although treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) exhibits wide-ranging neuropsychological deficits, factors defining cognitive prognosis in TRS are unclear. We aimed to clarify the association between cognitive dysfunction and factors, such as plasma concentrations of clozapine (CLZ), N-desmethylclozapine (NDMC), and homovanillic acid (HVA), due to differences in antipsychotic responses in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Platinum/taxane (TC) chemotherapy with debulking surgery stays the mainstay of the treatment in ovarian cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis, and recently its novel modality, intraperitoneal carboplatin with dose-dense paclitaxel (ddTCip), was shown to have greater therapeutic impact. Nevertheless, the response varies among patients and consequent recurrence, or relapse often occurs. Discovery of therapeutic response predictor to ddTCip and/or TC therapy is eagerly awaited to improve the treatment outcome.

Trans-cis photoisomerization is generally described by a model in which the reaction proceeds via a common intermediate having a perpendicular conformation around the rotating bond, irrespective of from which isomer the reaction starts. Nevertheless, such an intermediate has yet to be identified unambiguously, and it is often called the 'phantom' state. Here we present the structural identification of the common, perpendicular intermediate of stilbene photoisomerization using ultrafast Raman spectroscopy.

Purpose: To develop and evaluate the capabilities of a dynamic elbow testing apparatus that simulates unconstrained elbow motion throughout the range of humerothoracic (HTA) abduction.

Methods: Elbow flexion was generated by six computer-controlled electromechanical actuators that simulated muscle action, while six degree-of-freedom joint motion was measured using an optical tracking device. Repeatability of joint kinematics was assessed at four HTA angles (0°, 45°, 90°, 135°) and with two muscle force combinations (A1-biceps brachialis, brachioradialis and A2-biceps, brachioradialis).

Introduction: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumours that produce catecholamines. [131I] metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG)-avid unresectable or metastatic PPGLs are treated with [131I] MIBG radionuclide therapy. A high metabolic tumour volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) can be poor prognostic factors.

Aim: Omega-3 fatty acids have emerged as a new option for controlling the residual risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) in the statin era. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is associated with reduced CAD risk in the Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl-Intervention trial, whereas the Statin Residual Risk with Epanova in High Cardiovascular Risk Patients with Hypertriglyceridemia trial that used the combination EPA/docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has failed to derive any clinical benefit. These contradictory results raise important questions about whether investigating the antiatherosclerotic effect of omega-3 fatty acids could help to understand their significance for CAD-risk reduction.

Article Synopsis
  • Current guidelines suggest implanting defibrillators in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who have low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD).
  • A study evaluated 441 AMI patients with LVEF ≤40% to identify predictors of SCD, finding that QRS duration, severely reduced LVEF, and delayed reperfusion time were significant risk factors.
  • The combination of these three factors (QRSd ≥100 msec, LVEF ≤23%, and reperfusion time >5.5 hours) provided strong risk stratification for SCD after AMI, highlighting the need for close monitoring of patients with these conditions.

Metal nanoparticles have high potential in light-harvesting applications by transferring absorbed photon energy to the adsorbates. However, photoexcited plasmon-driven ultrafast dynamics of the adsorbate on metal nanoparticles have not been clearly understood. We studied ultrafast plasmon-driven processes of trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE) adsorbed on gold nanoparticle assemblies (GNAs) using time-resolved surface-enhanced impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy (TR-SE-ISRS).

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) elicit potent cell cycle arrest in EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which these drugs alter the tumor phenotype that contributes to the immune escape of EGFR-mutant cells. Using EGFR-mutant NSCLC cell lines and tissue samples from patients, we investigated the changes in immune checkpoints expressed in tumor cells following EGFR inhibition.

Introduction: Karyopherin alpha 2 (KPNA2) and karyopherin beta 1 (KPNB1) constitute nuclear transport protein complexes involved in nuclear import and are significant in tumor progression. Although high KPNA2 expression was associated with poor prognosis in solid tumors, the relationship between KPNA2 and KPNB1 expression and their prognostic role in gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to correlate the expression of KPNA2 and KPNB1 with various features, including clinicopathological characteristics in 130 patients with GC and survival in 94 patients with invasive lesions extending to the submucosa or deeper.

Fluorogenic probes for bioimaging have become essential tools for life science and medicine, and the key to their development is a precise understanding of the mechanisms available for fluorescence off/on control, such as photoinduced electron transfer (PeT) and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Here we establish a new molecular design strategy to rationally develop activatable fluorescent probes, which exhibit a fluorescence off/on change in response to target biomolecules, by controlling the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. This approach was developed on the basis of a thorough investigation of the fluorescence quenching mechanism of -phenyl rhodamine dyes (commercially available as the QSY series) by means of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and photophysical evaluation of their derivatives.
