Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of video-assisted neck surgery (VANS) for treating papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) compared to traditional open thyroid surgery.
  • A total of 121 patients were examined, with significant findings showing that VANS had less blood loss but longer operative times than open surgery, without major differences in complications or recurrence rates.
  • The conclusion indicates that VANS is a viable option for thyroid surgery in PTC cases, although more extended follow-up is necessary to fully understand long-term recurrence rates.

Rationale: Polysorbate 80 (PS80) is an amphipathic, nonionic surfactant that is commonly used to stabilize proteins in biopharmaceutical formulations. PS80 undergoes oxidative and/or enzymatic degradation. However, because PS80 is a complex mixture consisting of many constituents, comprehensive evaluations of its oxidative degradation products are difficult and insufficient.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how physical activity influences pneumonia risk in patients recovering from surgery for esophageal cancer, specifically after a radical esophagectomy.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 83 patients, tracking their physical activity during the subacute recovery phase (postoperative days 8-10) to see if it affected pneumonia development from day 11 until discharge.
  • Results showed that patients who took fewer than 1494 steps per day had a significantly higher chance of developing pneumonia, highlighting the importance of physical activity for improving surgical recovery outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The abscopal effect is a rare phenomenon where local treatment, like radiation, can trigger systemic anti-tumor responses in areas distant from the treatment site.
  • A 68-year-old man with a thyroid tumor and bone metastases underwent total thyroidectomy and radiation therapy, leading to the unexpected disappearance of bone metastases.
  • This case highlights the rare occurrence of solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the thyroid and marks the first documented instance of the abscopal effect related to thyroid surgery and radiation.

Rationale: Polysorbate 80 (PS80) is an amphipathic, nonionic surfactant commonly used in pharmaceutical protein formulations and is composed of fatty acid (FA) esters of polyethoxylated sorbitan. However, commercial PS80 products contain substantial amounts of by-products. The development of simple and reliable methods for PS80 component analysis is challenging given the inherent heterogeneity.

Background: Histopathological tumor regression grade is applied not to lymph nodes but primary tumors modified by preoperative treatments. This study focused on patients whose pathological examination at the time of surgery showed no residual tumor after chemo(radio)therapy in the primary lesion (ypT0) or lymph nodes (ypN0).

Patients And Methods: A total of 87 patients with clinical stage II/III thoracic esophageal cancer underwent esophagectomy following preoperative treatments to evaluate significances between pathological response and clinical outcomes; 51 patients with clinically definitive lymph node metastasis (cN+) were analyzed as a subgroup.

Background: Evolution of reproductive isolation is an important process, generating biodiversity and driving speciation. To better understand this process, it is necessary to investigate factors underlying reproductive isolation through various approaches but also in various taxa. Previous studies, mainly focusing on diploid animals, supported the prevalent view that reproductive barriers evolve gradually as a by-product of genetic changes accumulated by natural selection by showing a positive relationship between the degree of reproductive isolation and genetic distance.

Introduction: Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) after gastrectomy requires more attention during surgery than ordinary PD due to anatomical variation with different types of gastrointestinal anastomoses, the complication of anatomical dissection, and the extent of adhesions present. Herein, we describe the PD strategies we used in three patients who strategy for three patients who had previously undergone distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer treatment.

Discussion: Generally, reconstruction following PD in patients who have undergone a prior Billroth I reconstruction is simple, as there is no previous afferent loop.

We report a negative resistance, namely, a voltage drop along the opposite direction of a current flow, in the superconducting gap of NbSe thin films under the irradiation of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The amplitude of the negative resistance becomes larger by increasing the SAW power and decreasing temperature. As one possible scenario, we propose that soliton-antisoliton pairs in the charge density wave of NbSe modulated by the SAW serve as a time-dependent capacitance in the superconducting state, leading to the dc negative resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 27-year-old woman experienced an ischemic stroke during her first trimester of pregnancy, which turned out to be the first sign of moyamoya disease, a rare vascular disorder.
  • - After her stroke symptoms worsened despite treatment, an artificial abortion was performed, leading to an immediate halt in her neurological decline and significant recovery.
  • - The case suggests that combining artificial abortion and antithrombotic therapy can effectively manage moyamoya disease-related strokes in pregnant patients by stabilizing blood flow and preventing further neurological damage.

Conversion surgery has been reported but few cases have undergone surgical R0 resection after second-line chemotherapy. We report a case of an unresectable locally advanced gastric cancer in a patient who finally underwent the operation (R0) after second-line chemotherapy. The 77-year-old male was diagnosed with gastric cancer (cT4 [SI; Skin, Liver] N0M0 c Stage IIIA) with invasion to the skin of the abdominal wall, and chemotherapy was initially performed because of his poor performance status and due to the large defect in the abdominal wall that might occur if an operation was performed.

Temperature dependent inversion of enantioselectivity in asymmetric catalysis is an interesting and somewhat unusual phenomenon. We have observed temperature dependent inversion of enantioselectivity in the asymmetric autocatalysis reaction when triggered by a wide scope of enantioenriched alcohols and amines. The addition reaction of diisopropylzinc to pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde in the presence of enantiopure alcohols or amines affords the pyrimidyl alkanol product at 0 °C with high ee.
