Background: Despite the high recurrence rate of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), there are limitations in accurately predicting recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) based on clinicopathological factors alone. However, prediction of recurrence using biomolecular characteristics of bladder tumors has not been applied to clinical practice. The objective of this study was to establish a new gene expression scoring system for identifying patients at high risk of recurrence.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancerous tissues absorb significantly more glucose than normal tissues, prompting the development of a gadobutrol-glucose contrast solution for improved MRI imaging of tumors.
  • The contrast medium was successfully mixed, tested on VX7 cancerous rabbits, and showed increased signal intensity after vein infusion compared to a gadobutrol-saline solution.
  • The use of the gadobutrol-glucose solution effectively enhanced the visualization of the cancerous regions in the MRI scans, indicating its potential for better cancer imaging.

  • The study investigates the role of complement component C5a and NLRP3 inflammasome in the growth of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) using a rat model.
  • It employs various methods like qRT-PCR and western blotting to analyze the expression of key inflammatory markers, finding that these markers are significantly increased in BPH tissues over time.
  • Resveratrol, a natural compound that inhibits the NLRP3 pathway, was found to reduce prostate size and inflammatory markers, suggesting potential therapeutic implications for BPH treatment.

  • The study investigates treatment options and costs for malignant brain tumors (GBM and PCNSL) in Japan through a survey of 47 institutions.
  • For GBM, the most common treatment is 'Surgery + radiotherapy with temozolomide', costing approximately 7.50 million JPY, with additional treatments raising costs significantly.
  • PCNSL treatments, especially R-MPV therapy, also incur high costs, with some regimens exceeding 1 million JPY per month, highlighting the need for better cost-effectiveness assessments in future health studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) who might experience thrombosis extension under different treatment regimens.
  • Conducted in Japan from April 2019 to April 2022, the trial involved 87 patients who received either rivaroxaban with physical therapy or physical therapy alone for 90 days, monitoring for VTE recurrence and major bleeding.
  • Results showed that the rivaroxaban group had no cases of VTE recurrence, while the physical therapy group had a 4.4% recurrence rate; however, rivaroxaban was associated with a higher incidence of major bleeding events (9.5%).

Objectives: To examine the prognosis of lower urinary tract symptoms and function after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in patients with low preoperative bladder contractility.

Methods: A total of 115 patients who underwent RARP were enrolled and divided into two groups by preoperative urodynamic findings: normal (patients with bladder contractility index [BCI] ≥ 100; n = 70) and low contractility (patients with BCI < 100; n = 45) groups. Lower urinary tract symptoms and function parameters were prospectively evaluated at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after RARP in both groups.

Glioblastoma is the deadliest form of brain tumor. The presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) significantly hinders chemotherapy, necessitating the development of innovative treatment options for this tumor. This report presents the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) that targets glypican-1 (GPC1) in glioblastoma.

Purpose: We assessed the stiffness of unilateral undescended testes after orchiopexy, examining its value in tracking histopathological changes and fertility potential during postoperative follow-up. Additionally, we explored the optimal timing for surgery based on testicular stiffness.

Patients And Methods: Thirty-six boys who had been diagnosed with unilateral undescended testis and treated with orchiopexy were included in the study.

Aims: To determine the association between drinking habits and social factors among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment in Japan.

Methods: The study participants who provided answers for the questionnaire concerning alcohol consumption were 1017 female patients undergoing ART treatment were enrolled in the Japan-Female Employment and Mental Health in assisted reproductive technology (J-FEMA) study between August and December 2018. Patient characteristics, including demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic status, were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire which was distributed only once during the period, regardless of their first or follow-up examination.

Background: Patients with bilateral primary aldosteronism (PA) generally are treated with antihypertensive drugs, but optimal treatment for patients with complications due to refractory hypertension has not been established. In this report, we present a case with bilateral PA who presented with persistent hypertension, despite treatment with 6 drugs, and left-dominant heart failure, which was improved after unilateral adrenalectomy.

Case Presentation: A 61-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of severe left-dominant heart failure.

Introduction: We report a case of bilateral neonatal testicular torsion, with an extravaginal and a contralateral intravaginal testicular torsion.

Case Presentation: A 5-day-old boy with bilateral scrotal swelling and palpable induration was diagnosed with bilateral neonatal testicular torsion by color Doppler ultrasonography. The right testis was black with 360-degree extravaginal torsion of the spermatic cord, and the left testis was brown with 90-degree intravaginal torsion.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between total protein expression of heart development protein with EGF-like domain 1 (HEG1) and clinicopathological characteristics in patients with bladder cancer (BC) after radical cystectomy (RC).

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 110 patients who underwent RC at Kitasato University Hospital. And we prepared an anti-HEG1 monoclonal antibody W10B9, which can detect total HEG1 protein.

Article Synopsis
  • S100A16 is a calcium-binding protein linked to various cancers, but its role in bladder cancer (BC) is not well-studied, prompting a retrospective analysis of 121 BC patients who had radical cystectomy (RC).
  • The study found that S100A16 was expressed in 44.6% of patients, and its presence was significantly correlated with factors like age, tumor stage, and patient outcomes like recurrence and cancer-specific death.
  • Patients with S100A16 expression showed shorter survival rates, suggesting it may serve as a biomarker for aggressive cancer in BC; additionally, the PI3k/Akt signaling pathway might be targeted for future therapies.

An isolated intravesical cavernous hemangioma of the bladder represents a rare occurrence, frequently posing challenges in distinguishing it from rhabdomyosarcoma. In this context, we present a case involving an 8-year-old male child diagnosed with a cavernous hemangioma of the bladder, which on MRI closely resembles the findings of rhabdomyosarcoma. Under such circumstances, the utilization of slow-flow images in contrast-enhanced MRI holds promise as a potentially valuable tool for discriminating between cavernous hemangioma and rhabdomyosarcoma in similar clinical scenarios.

  • Hepcidin is a key hormone related to iron regulation and is found to be elevated during Helicobacter pylori infections, possibly contributing to iron deficiency anemia.
  • A study involved patients with different types of gastritis to assess hepcidin expression in the gastric mucosa through biopsies and immunohistochemical analysis.
  • Results showed increased hepcidin expression in lymphocytes of nodular and chronic gastritis patients compared to those without H. pylori, indicating that the infection may enhance hepcidin levels associated with iron deficiency anemia.

The selective and sensitive sensing of neurochemicals is essential to decipher in-brain chemistry underlying brain pathophysiology. The recent development of flexible and multifunctional polymer-based fibers has been shown useful in recording and modulating neural activities, primarily electrical ones. In this study, we were able to realize fiber-based neurochemical sensing with high sensitivity and selectivity.
