Healthcare systems data (also known as real-world or routinely collected health data) could transform the conduct of clinical trials. Demonstrating integrity and provenance of these data is critical for clinical trials, to enable their use where appropriate and avoid duplication using scarce trial resources. Building on previous work, this proof-of-concept study used a data intelligence tool, the "Central Metastore," to provide metadata and lineage information of nationally held data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasonography compared to computed tomography (CT) in measuring quadriceps muscle mass in critically ill patients with varying body mass indices (BMI) following traumatic brain injuries.
  • Conducted in a specialized trauma ICU, the research involved a sequential analysis of muscle thickness using both ultrasound and CT scans at three different time points during patient admission.
  • The results showed that while there were minor differences between the two measurement methods, these discrepancies were clinically insignificant, indicating a strong correlation between ultrasonography and CT regardless of the patients' BMI.

Article Synopsis
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) is a rare cause of infections in artificial joints, and it can be hard to diagnose because many people with it don't have a history of tuberculosis.
  • A 67-year-old man had a joint infection after knee surgery, and tests showed it was caused by M. tuberculosis, even though he didn't have any past TB symptoms or connections.
  • Successful treatment involved two surgeries and taking anti-TB medicine for a whole year, highlighting that doctors need to consider M. tuberculosis when people have infections that regular tests don’t explain, especially in areas where TB is more common.

Hypercoagulability, which can be induced by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although anticoagulation therapy is expected to decrease the incidence of thrombosis and mortality in COVID-19 patients, the optimal use of anticoagulation therapy has not been established, especially using unfractionated heparin (UFH). Herein, we suggest a new anticoagulation treatment protocol for the use of UFH in Japanese COVID-19 patients.
