Teledermatology in the provision of biologics through COVID-19 in a rural dermatology practice-A retrospective review.

COVID-19 compounded existing barriers to healthcare for rural patients. We completed a retrospective chart review of patients receiving Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme subsidised biologics at a Modified Monash Model 3 dermatology practice during the pandemic and examined factors contributing to successful continuation of care, particularly teledermatology. Our experience is instructive in the provision of medical dermatology to regional patients.

Imiquimod induced regression of clinically diagnosed superficial basal cell carcinoma is associated with early infiltration by CD4 T cells and dendritic cells.

Imiquimod is presumed to clear basal cell carcinoma (BCC) through apoptosis mediated by cytokines and lymphocytes, with erosion often observed correlating with complete clearance. The objective was to determine the cellular immune response early in the course of treatment in order to examine whether cell mediated immunity could be responsible for imiquimod mediated regression of BCC. Sixteen adults with clinically diagnosed BCC were openly assigned to 5 days per week of drug (1, 2 or 4 weeks) or placebo (2 weeks) in groups of four.

Increased Fas ligand expression by T cells and tumour cells in the progression of actinic keratosis to squamous cell carcinoma.

Background: In the counterattack model of tumorigenesis, it has been proposed that tumours develop resistance to attack from Fas ligand (FasL)-expressing cytotoxic T cells by downregulating Fas (immune escape), while at the same time upregulating FasL expression to induce apoptosis in Fas-expressing T cells (counterattack).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine Fas and FasL expression on tumour cells and infiltrating T cells during the progression of actinic keratoses (AK), the benign precursor lesion, to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Patients And Methods: Samples of AK (n = 20) and SCC (n = 20) were collected from immunocompetent patients attending dermatology clinics.

Monitoring clozapine: are fingerprick blood and plasma clozapine levels equivalent to arm venipuncture blood and plasma levels?

The objective of this pilot study was to determine whether fingerprick blood and plasma clozapine levels were equivalent to arm venipuncture blood and plasma levels for the purpose of therapeutic monitoring. A convenient sample of 10 outpatients from the Elgin Program of Assertive Community Treatment Team (PACT) participated in the study. Blood samples were obtained simultaneously from both the arm and finger in patients at steady state to measure clozapine levels.

Treatment of dandruff with 5% tea tree oil shampoo.

Background: Dandruff appears to be related to the yeast Pityrosporum ovale. Tea tree oil has antifungal properties with activity against P ovale and may be useful in the treatment of dandruff.

Objective: We conducted a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group study to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of 5% tea tree oil and placebo in patients with mild to moderate dandruff.

Treatment of interdigital tinea pedis with 25% and 50% tea tree oil solution: a randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded study.

Tea tree oil has been shown to have activity against dermatophytes in vitro. We have conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blinded study to determine the efficacy and safety of 25% and 50% tea tree oil in the treatment of interdigital tinea pedis. One hundred and fifty-eight patients with tinea pedis clinically and microscopy suggestive of a dermatophyte infection were randomized to receive either placebo, 25% or 50% tea tree oil solution.

Reactive perforating collagenosis: a condition that may be underdiagnosed.

Reactive perforating collagenosis is a perforating disorder developing in adults, usually in association with diabetes mellitus or renal failure. We present three cases diagnosed at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a 5 month period. All three patients had long-standing diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and ischaemic heart disease.
