Does weight-based pricing for municipal waste collection contribute to waste reduction? A dynamic panel analysis in Flanders.

This paper analyzes the effects of weight-based pricing on municipal waste generation in Flanders (Belgium) by applying the bias-corrected least squares dummy variables estimation model to account for the dynamic relationship. The study also considers yearly weight-based pricing dummy variables to clarify the annual effects after its introducing and price elasticities of weight-based pricing systems from the both viewpoints of short and long terms. The results by the dynamic panel estimations showed that the continuous participation of weight-based pricing decreases the amount of residual waste significantly by approximately 10.

Clinicopathological Analysis of 320 Cases of Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma Using the Hans Classifier.

The estimation of clinical prognosis for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with a quick, cost-efficient method is necessary because of the clinical heterogeneity of this disease, which leads to death, relapsed or refractory disease in approximately 40% of patients. We analyzed 320 cases diagnosed from 2007 to 2013 treated with R-CHOP therapy at Tokai University Hospital and associated institutions. DLBCL was classified according to the cell-of-origin using the Hans algorithm [germinal center B-cell-like (GCB) vs non-GCB subtypes], and into 6 subgroups derived from combinations of CD10, BCL6 and MUM1 markers.

A novel 111-nucleotide duplication in the G gene of human metapneumovirus.

In 2017, novel human metapneumovirus (HMPV) A2b subgroup strains with a 111-nucleotide duplication in the G gene was detected by the present team. These strains were related to previously identified HMPV A2b strains with a 180-nucleotide duplication; however, they appeared to be different strains, produced by an independent duplication event. The recent evolution of HMPV suggests that careful monitoring of this virus is required.

(HMPV), a member of the family , was first isolated in 2001. Seroepidemiological studies have shown that HMPV has been a major etiological agent of acute respiratory infections in humans for more than 50 years. Molecular epidemiological, genetic, and antigenetic evolutionary studies of HMPV will strengthen our understanding of the epidemic behavior of the virus and provide valuable insight for the control of HMPV and the development of vaccines and antiviral drugs against HMPV infection.

Cost and efficiency of disaster waste disposal: A case study of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

This paper analyzes the cost and efficiency of waste disposal associated with the Great East Japan Earthquake. The following two analyses were performed: (1) a popular parametric approach, which is an ordinary least squares (OLS) method to estimate the factors that affect the disposal costs; (2) a non-parametric approach, which is a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) to analyze the efficiency of each municipality and clarify the best performance of the disaster waste management. Our results indicate that a higher recycling rate of disaster waste and a larger amount of tsunami sediments decrease the average disposal costs.

Population doubling level-dependent change of secreted glycosaminoglycan in equine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

In regenerative medicine using transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the importance of regulating the quality of MSCs has been well recognized; however, there is little information concerning the relationship between the population doubling level (PDL) and the stemness of MSCs in equine medicine. In this study, we showed that the amount of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) secreted by bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs) decreases with increase of PDL. Enzymatic digestion and two-dimensional electrophoresis revealed that a main component of GAG produced by BMSCs was hyaluronan with a small amount of chondroitin sulfate.

Does industrial waste taxation contribute to reduction of landfilled waste? Dynamic panel analysis considering industrial waste category in Japan.

Waste taxes, such as landfill and incineration taxes, have emerged as a popular option in developed countries to promote the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle). However, few studies have examined the effectiveness of waste taxes. In addition, quite a few studies have considered both dynamic relationships among dependent variables and unobserved individual heterogeneity among the jurisdictions.

Testis cancer gene D40 expression and its relationship with clinicopathological features in infertile men.

We previously identified a novel human cancer/testis gene, D40, which is dominantly expressed in testicular germ cells, various cancer cell lines and primary human tumors. The expression of D40 mRNA and proteins in various testicular tissues was quantified using the conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), real-time quantitative RT-PCR and western blot analysis. The relationship between levels of D40 expression, serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) level and Johnsen's score was examined.

Adrenocortical carcinoma: retrospective study of 14 patients experienced at a single institution over 34 years.

Objective: To review clinical outcome of patients with adrenocortical carcinoma experienced at a single institute over 34 years.

Inter/intra investigator variation in orchidometric measurements of testicular volume by ten investigators from five institutions.

Aim: To perform quality control studies on testicular volume measurements for a multi-center epidemiological study of male reproductive function.

Methods: We constructed a data matrix with a balanced assignment for 2 consecutive days by ten investigators (andrological career: 4-21 years) from five institutions and 12 male volunteers aged 20-26 years. Testicular volume was measured by Prader's orchidometer.

In this report, we have examined the expression and localization of this protein in human testis with an antibody specific to D40 protein. Testicular metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

We present a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the testis that metastasized from lung cancer. The patient, who had received left pneumonectomy 2 years earlier for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung, developed pulmonary metastasis, which was treated with chemotherapy. Although the recurrence regressed after treatment, the testicular tumor progressed gradually.

Balance of apoptosis and proliferation of germ cells related to spermatogenesis in aged men.

To clarify whether germ cell apoptosis is related to a decrease of germ cells in the aged testis with impaired spermatogenesis, we investigated the apoptotic rate of each germ cell type. Testicular specimens were obtained by orchiectomy from 36 men with advanced prostate cancer and by testicular biopsy from 21 men with obstructive azoospermia, which served as controls. Frequent expression of new cancer/testis gene D40/AF15q14 in lung cancers of smokers.

We found a significant correlation between lung cancer in smokers and the expression of a human gene, D40, predominantly expressed in testis and cancers. In an attempt to clone a novel human gene, we screened a cDNA library derived from a human B cell line and obtained a cDNA clone that we refer to as D40. A search for public databases for sequence homologies showed that the D40 gene is identical to AF15q14.

Evolved stars of about one solar mass are in general spherically symmetric, yet the planetary nebulae that they produce in the next phase of their evolution tend not to exhibit such symmetry. Collimated 'jets' and outflows of material have been observed up to approximately 0.3 parsec from the central stars of planetary nebulae, and precession of those jets has been proposed to explain the observed asymmetries.

An unknown peak (peak A) was detected in a mass chromatogram of komatsuna extract containing a high concentration of phenthoate (PAP), and it was considered to be O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorodithioate (OOS). Although it is generally known that OOS exists as an impurity in technical malathion and PAP, it has not been reported that OOS is present in crops. Since an OOS standard is not commercially available, OOS was separated and purified from commercial emulsifiable malathion.

Subclinical Cushing syndrome due to adrenocorticotropic hormone-independent macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia: changes in plasma cortisol levels during long-term follow-up.

A 63-year-old man with bilateral adrenal tumors was treated for hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Endocrinologic examination during follow-up revealed the production of cortisol to be independent of the regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. Therefore, he was diagnosed as having subclinical Cushing syndrome, and these tumors were removed.

Altered expression of CD45 isoforms in differentiation of acute myeloid leukemia.

Specific expression of different CD45 isoforms can be seen in various stages of differentiation of normal nucleated hematopoietic cells. Association of membrane expression of CD45 isoforms and differential levels of leukemia cells was studied in 91 cases with de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Membrane expression of CD45RA and CD45RO was analyzed by flow cytometry and their expression patterns were compared with AML subtypes classified according to the French-American-British (FAB) classification.

Fatal alveolar hemorrhage in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease presenting polymyositis features.

A 22-year-old female with Raynaud's phenomenon, swollen hands and a high titer of anti-RNP antibodies developed fever and myositis. Prednisolone (40 mg/day) was considered effective for myositis since circulating myogenic enzymes rapidly decreased. However, she suddenly developed respiratory distress with bilateral pulmonary infiltrates and bloody sputum.
