Peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs), a novel family of pattern recognition molecules (PRMs) in innate immunity conserved from insects to mammals, recognize bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan (PGN) and are suggested to act as anti-bacterial factors. Background: The construction of complete bi-directional block in the isthmus (ITH) between the tricuspid annulus and inferior vena cava by radiofrequency energy (RF) applications is sometimes hampered due to anatomical problems such as a thick isthmus or aneurysmal pouch in patients with common atrial flutter (AFL).

Methods And Results: Fifteen patients were referred for RF ablation of AFL. The anatomical thickness of the right atrial ITH, diameter of the right atrium and thickness of the right atrial free wall were determined using intracardiac echocardiography (ICE), along with the endocardial electrogram recordings at the ITH.

Within a few minutes of an intravenous injection of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into mice, platelets accumulate, largely in the lung. At higher doses, LPS induces rapid shock (within 10 min), leading to death within 1 h. This type of shock differs from so-called endotoxin shock, in which shock signs and death occur several hours or more later.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an increase in laser power on the transmitted laser signals from vital and non-vital teeth, in the hope of achieving a better assessment of human pulp vitality with the transmitted laser-light flowmeter. The experiments were carried out on total of 61 vital teeth with no restoration (19 upper central incisors, 16 upper lateral incisors, 16 upper canines, and 10 first premolars) and five non-vital upper central incisors (the root canals of which were filled with gutta-percha) in 15 subjects aged 22-28 years. For use with transmitted laser light, the fibers within the probe of a conventional laser Doppler flowmeter (LDF) apparatus were used, one for transmitting light onto the labial surface, the other for receiving it at the palatal surface of the same tooth, as reported previously.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia. In order to define the morphologic characteristics of the masseter muscle incidental to bone abnormalities, we present 3 cases of CCD with the masseter muscle thickness and maxillofacial bone abnormalities, using computed tomography (CT) and panoramic radiographs. In CCD patients (a) the masseter muscles were less thick than in age- and sex-matched control subjects, (b) the zygomatic arch was discontinuous with the hypoplastic zygomatic bone, (c) the ascending ramus of the mandible had parallel-sided borders, and (d) the coronoid process pointed upwards and/or posteriorly.

Objective: The function of the C-terminus region of the human ether-a-go-go related gene (HERG) has not been well characterized except for its involvement in trafficking. To understand further the role of C-terminus region, we performed a functional analysis of a novel frameshift mutation (1122fs/147) identified in a Japanese long QT syndrome 2 (LQT2) patient who had recurrent episodes of syncope.

To help us investigate the time course of mandibular enlargement in acromegaly or acrogiantism to determine the most suitable period for occlusal treatment in this disease, our aim was to develop a rat model of acromegaly (acrogiantism). In this study, prominent mandibular enlargement was induced by continuous subcutaneous infusion of human recombinant insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) (640 microg/day) in 10-week-old male rats for 4 weeks (n = 6); the control sham-operated group was injected with saline alone (n = 6). Circulating human IGF-I was clearly detectable in the IGF-I group during the four-week administration period, while endogenous rat IGF-I levels decreased.

We recently reported that anti-IL-15 neutralizing mAb has been shown to inhibit production of MCP-1 in response to IL-2 from normal human gingival fibroblasts (HGF), the major constituent of gingival tissue. In the present study, we examined the expression of IL-2R and IL-15R subunits in HGF from normal and inflamed regions and the role of endogenous IL-15 in IL-2-mediated signaling. Normal HGF expressed IL-2Rbeta and common gamma-chain (gammac) but not IL-2Ralpha or IL-15Ralpha, whereas inflamed HGF expressed IL-2Ralpha, IL-15Ralpha, IL-2Rbeta, and gammac, as assessed by RT-PCR and flow cytometry.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic Abs targeting proteinase 3 (PR3) have been detected in relation to a wide range of inflammatory conditions such as periodontitis, and interaction of anti-PR3 Abs with endothelial and epithelial cells provokes cell activation, although the underlying mechanism has been unclear. The present study showed that human oral epithelial cells expressed PR3 mRNA after treatment with proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1alpha, TNF-alpha, IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and IFN-gamma. A 29-kDa PR3 was expressed on the cell surface and released into culture supernatants by the cells upon stimulation with these cytokines.

To determine the risk of developing symptoms due to the presence of maxillary and mandibular third molars, we analyzed a reliable population sample by age, and according to third-molar position and impaction level using long-term follow-up data under conditions of good oral hygiene. Of 308 graduates from our dental school, a total of 776 third molars were followed up for periods of 11 to 27 years by means of intraoral radiographs. The development of symptoms, the participant's age, and third-molar angular position and degree of impaction were investigated.

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and oral mucosa in which the cell-mediated cytotoxicity is regarded as a major mechanism of pathogenesis. To understand its pathophysiology further, the present study examined the in situ expression of chemokines and chemokine receptors in oral lichen planus. Immunohistochemical analysis of 15 cases has consistently revealed that infiltrating CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the submucosa predominantly expressed CCR5 and CXCR3.

This study was designed to determine whether painful electrical stimulation of the tooth pulp induces centrally mediated reflex vasomotor changes in human gingiva and whether the sympathetic nervous system is involved in the vasomotor responses. Dynamic changes in maxillary gingival blood flow (GBF) following painful electrical stimulation of the mandibular lateral incisor were investigated, by means of laser-Doppler flowmetry, in both healthy volunteers and patients undergoing sympathetic blockade for hyperhidrosis. Increases in GBF were observed in both healthy volunteers and patients on the ipsilateral side without an increase in systemic blood pressure, but the evoked GBF increase disappeared when pain sensation was abolished by local anesthetization with 2% xylocaine solution.

An 87-year-old man was referred to our institution to undergo radiofrequency catheter ablation for typical atrial flutter. A decapolar electrode catheter with an interelectrode spacing of 1mm positioned at the cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) exhibited 2 discrete potentials. The first electrogram was recorded at a site close to the tricuspid annulus and the second at a site close to the inferior vena cava at the CTI.

The cause and duration of the thrombogenesis provoked by radiofrequency catheter ablation (RF-CA) was investigated by measuring the thrombin-antithrombin III complex (TAT) in 43 patients who underwent RF-CA and in 20 control subjects who underwent an electrophysiologic study. Blood samples were collected at 7 different times: before introducing the sheaths, during the ablation procedure and at 30 min, 6 and 24h, and 3 and 6 days after the procedure. Groups of mated female Sprague-Dawley rats were simultaneously exposed to 0 (sham exposed), 7, 70, or 350 microT (rms) circularly polarized 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF) for 22 h/day on gestational day 8-15, the period of rat fetal organogenesis (organogenesis study) or from day 0 to day 7 of gestation, the rat preimplantation period (preimplantation study). It has been shown earlier that electrical stimulation of the distal cut end of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in the cat evokes three different patterns of pulpal blood-flow (PBF) response in the ipsilateral mandibular canine tooth (a decrease, a biphasic response, or an increase). The response to a given stimulus sometimes changed to another pattern even in one and the same experimental animal during the course of the experiment. It is known that the evoked decrease is due to activation of the sympathetics and that the increase is due to antidromic activation of sensory fibres; but, it is unknown why the response varies so much.
