Background: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive disease characterized by pancreatic fibrosis for which effective treatment options are lacking. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown potential for fibrosis treatment but face limitations in clinical application. The high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) fragment mobilizes MSCs from bone marrow into the blood and has emerged as a promising therapeutic agent for tissue regeneration in various pathological conditions.

There is no recent update on the clinical course of retransplantation (re-LT) after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the US using recent national data. The UNOS database (2002-2023) was used to explore patient characteristics in initial LT, comparing deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT) and LDLT for graft survival (GS), reasons for graft failure, and GS after re-LT. It assesses waitlist dropout and re-LT likelihood, categorizing re-LT cohort based on time to re-listing as acute or chronic (≤ or > 1 mo).

The condition for artificial agents to possess perceivable intentions can be considered that they have resolved a form of the symbol grounding problem. Here, the symbol grounding is considered an achievement of the state where the language used by the agent is endowed with some quantitative meaning extracted from the physical world. To achieve this type of symbol grounding, we adopt a method for characterizing robot gestures with quantitative meaning calculated from word-distributed representations constructed from a large corpus of text.

Article Synopsis
  • Abdominal angiography techniques like transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) are vital for treating liver cancer, but traditional transfemoral access (TFA) can lead to issues like postoperative pain and extended bed rest, impacting patient satisfaction.
  • A study involving 1,601 patients showed that using transradial access (TRA) for TACE achieved a high success rate of 99.4% and a low complication rate of 1.2%, with 98.2% of patients wanting the radial method for future treatments.
  • TRA is shown to be a safe and effective alternative to TFA for abdominal angiography, potentially easing the patient experience and improving clinical outcomes.

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a serious global health issue, ranking as the fifth most common cancer and causing significant cancer-related deaths; liver transplantation could be a cure, but recurrence after the procedure is a major concern.
  • This study analyzed 113 patients who received living-donor liver transplants for HCC from 2001 to 2020, focusing on a new metric called liver immune status index (LISI), which may influence recovery and prognosis by assessing donor liver characteristics.
  • Results show that higher LISI is associated with lower recurrence rates and better overall survival, suggesting that LISI could serve as a helpful noninvasive marker to predict early recurrence risk and tap into the liver's natural immune response against

Plate fixation to zygomatic arch fractures carries the risk of facial nerve palsy and scarring of the cheek; however, without plate fixation, bone deviation or displacement may reoccur after surgery. Furthermore, zygomatic arch fractures combined with zygomatic body fractures are more postoperatively unstable than single zygomatic arch fractures. Few reports have focused on this combined fracture type, and no consensus has been reached regarding treatment.

Immunotherapy using immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has shown superior efficacy compared with conventional chemotherapy in certain cancer types, establishing immunotherapy as the fourth standard treatment alongside surgical intervention, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. In cancer immunotherapy employing ICIs, CD8-positive cytotoxic T lymphocytes are recognized as the primary effector cells. For effective clinical outcomes, it is essential that the targeted cancer cells express HLA class I molecules to present antigenic peptides derived from the tumor.

In cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) of the head, we evaluated the exposure dose reduction effect to the crystalline lens and position-matching accuracy by narrowing one side (X2) of the X-ray aperture (blade) in the X-direction. We defined the ocular surface dose of the head phantom as the crystalline lens exposure dose and measured using a radiophotoluminescence dosimeter (RPLD, GD-352 M) in the preset field (13.6 cm) and in each of the fields when blade X2 aperture was reduced in 0.

Background And Aims: Liver macrophages are heterogeneous and play an important role in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) but there is limited understanding of the functions of specific macrophage subsets in the disease. We used a Western diet alcohol (WDA) mouse model of ALD to examine the hepatic myeloid cell compartment by single cell RNAseq and targeted KC ablation to understand the diversity and function of liver macrophages in ALD.

Approach And Results: In the WDA liver, KCs and infiltrating monocytes/macrophages each represented about 50% of the myeloid pool.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how changes in the elasticity of the internal anal sphincter relate to anorectal function in patients with rectal cancer who underwent chemoradiotherapy.
  • - Researchers used a technique called real-time tissue elastography with transanal ultrasonography to measure sphincter hardness before and after treatment in 27 patients, finding that 59.3% experienced a decrease in elasticity.
  • - Results showed that those with decreased elasticity had significantly higher maximum resting pressure and worse Wexner scores, suggesting that internal anal sphincter sclerosis from chemoradiotherapy may contribute to anorectal dysfunction.
