Imaging studies on acute focal bacterial nephritis.

Two cases of acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN) are reported. The first patient was a 35-year-old man and the diagnosis was made by ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT). The second patient was a 40-year-old man and was diagnosed by US, CT and renal biopsy.

An unusual profile of endocrine study in a patient with pre-Cushing's syndrome.

A unilateral adrenal tumour was incidentally detected in a 39-year-old woman with no characteristic features of Cushing's syndrome. Basal levels of glucocorticoids were within normal limits. However, abnormal pattern of plasma cortisol and ACTH was observed.

A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the mediastinum.

A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the mediastinum is reported. An 80-year-old man was admitted for further examination of a mediastinal tumor. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a large mediastinal mass and right interlobar pleural effusion.

Acquired cystic disease of the kidney and renal carcinoma in haemodialysis patients: ultrasonographic evaluation.

Ultrasonography was performed in 661 dialysis patients and acquired cystic disease of the kidney was found in 156 (125 men and 31 women). A higher incidence of cystic disease was found in males. There was no significant difference between the patients with and those without acquired cystic disease in terms of average age, but the duration of haemodialysis in those with acquired cystic disease was significantly longer.

Therapeutic and prognostic value of modal number of chromosomes at the blastic phase of Philadelphia-chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia: comparison based on the same criteria between Nagasaki University and Roswell Park Memorial Institute.

In a comparison of 47 patients with Philadelphia-chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the Nagasaki University School of Medicine and 64 patients with the same disease in the Roswell Park Memorial Institute, the correlation between the modal number of chromosomes and the therapeutic response and/or survival after the onset of the blastic phase (BP) was evaluated. The patients were divided into four groups on the basis of the modal number of chromosomes of the cells in the bone marrow: those with hypodiploidy (group 1), those with pseudodiploidy carrying a Ph chromosome (group 2), those with 47 chromosomes (group 3), and those with 48 or more chromosomes (group 4). The results revealed similar trends in the two institutes.

Liposarcoma of the renal capsule.

We report a case of liposarcoma of the renal capsule. The literature is reviewed, and diagnosis and management are discussed.

Successful hyperbaric oxygenation for radiation cystitis due to excessive irradiation to uterus cancer.

Six female patients with radiation cystitis, induced by previous pelvic radiation to uterus cancer, were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation (30-35% of oxygen concentration at 2 atmospheric absolute pressures for 90-120 min daily from 20 to 61 days with the average of 45 +/- 7 days, mean +/- standard error). Except in 1 patient symptoms and cystoscopic findings were improved. No side effects were found.

Comparison of ultrasonography, computerized tomography and angiography in dialysis patients with renal cell carcinoma.

Seventeen dialysis patients with renal cell carcinoma were examined preoperatively by ultrasonography, computerized tomography (CT) and angiography. Ultrasonography, CT and angiography correctly predicted the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma in 17 (100%) and 12 (71%) of 17, and 11 (69%) of 16 patients, respectively. Human penile hemodynamics by Xenon-133 clearance method in physiological erection.

We measured penile blood flow during physiological erection using the Xenon-133 clearance method in order to diagnose the exact cause of impotence. In 16 patients, in whom complete erection was obtained after visual sexual stimulation, the mean penile blood flow during erection was apparently higher than that in the flaccid state. On the contrary, in 6 patients whose reaction to visual stimulation was poor, penile blood flow did not change before and after stimulation.

Terodiline in the treatment of nocturnal enuresis in children.

The effect of terodiline was investigated in 17 children with nocturnal enuresis. Twelve of them were evaluated urodynamically before treatment and 6 of these were proved to have detrusor instability with or without provocation. Terodiline in a daily dose of 12.

Xanthofibroma of the adrenal gland.

The authors report on a 43-year-old woman who had undergone unilateral adrenalectomy for a right suprarenal mass. The removed specimen was histopathologically defined as xanthofibroma, a hitherto unpublished adrenal tumour. The connective tissue protein of this rare tumour contained great amounts of collagen, non-collagenous protein and elastin.

An azoospermic male with reciprocal translocation t(3;4)(p12;q21).

We report a case of autosomal translocation associated with azoospermia. The literature is reviewed, and hormone condition and testicular histology are discussed.

Serum prostatic acid phosphatase, gamma-seminoprotein and prostatic specific antigen in hemodialysis patients.

Serum concentrations of prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), gamma-seminoprotein (gamma-Sm) and prostatic specific antigen (PSA) were measured in 31 hemodialysis patients without clinical signs of malignant disease. PAP, gamma-Sm and PSA levels in serum were not significantly different between control and hemodialysis groups. A significant reduction in these tumor markers was not found after dialysis treatment.

We report a case of Klinefelter's syndrome associated with unilateral cryptorchidism and chordee without hypospadia. The literature is reviewed, and hormonal conditions of Klinefelter's syndrome during childhood are discussed.

We report a case of renal cell carcinoma in chronic renal failure without dialysis treatment. The literature is reviewed, and the relationship between renal cell carcinoma and uraemia is discussed.

The development of enamel tubules during the formation of enamel in the marsupial Monodelphis domestica.

In Monodelphis domestica, although both processes from odontoblasts and projections from ameloblasts were found in developing enamel, the majority of the contents of enamel tubules were probably processes that originated from odontoblasts. Processes from odontoblasts penetrating into enamel touched part of the ameloblasts in the stage of enamel formation. No specialised cell junctions were seen at the adherence between the two.

[Primary bilateral adrenal lymphomas in 3 cases].

This report describes three of primary bilateral adrenal lymphoma. Case 1 was an 87-year-old female. She was admitted to our hospital because of anemia.

A T-cell neoplasia showing clinicopathologic features of malignant histiocytosis with novel chromosomal abnormalities and N-ras mutation.

Malignant histiocytosis (MH) is a distinct disease entity defined clinically and morphologically. However, the neoplastic origin of MH is not well established. The authors report a 26-year-old woman who showed the typical clinicopathologic features of so-called MH.

To assess parameters of therapeutic response and survival after the onset of the blastic phase (BP) in 47 patients with Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a number of clinical hematologic, and cytogenetic data at the BP were evaluated. Among the eleven parameters examined, only the chromosomal findings correlated with the therapeutic response and survival after onset of the BP. Acute nonlymphocytic leukemia with normal karyotype. Is its in vivo drug susceptibility age-dependent?

Nineteen patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) de novo who had no detectable chromosomal abnormalities received intensive remission induction chemotherapy. After the first chemotherapy cycle, ten of 14 (71%) patients aged 60 years or less entered complete remission (CR) whereas none of five patients aged more than 65 years attained CR. On the other hand, leukemia showed a drug resistance in three (21%) of the former patients and in four (80%) of the latter patients.

Hormonal treatment of symptomatic spinal cord compression in advanced prostatic cancer.

The authors describe 2 cases of symptomatic spinal cord compression due to metastatic prostatic cancer. Both cases showed marked improvement of cord compression after hormone therapy, and decompressive laminectomy was not necessary. The management of prostatic cancer patients with symptomatic spinal cord compression is discussed.
