A simple and rapid qualitative chromatographic method with a unique extraction approach was developed and validated to screen oral fluid samples for 31 compounds in driving under the influence of drugs investigations. The scope and sensitivity of the method meets or exceeds Tier I recommendations established by the National Safety Council's Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division. Since this is a targeted chromatographic screen (rather than an immunoassay), cutoffs were set to match the confirmation levels in the recommendations.

Background: The main challenge for large-scale production of bacterial cellulose (BC) includes high production costs interlinked with raw materials, and low production rates. The valorization of renewable nutrient sources could improve the economic effectiveness of BC fermentation while their direct bioconversion into sustainable biopolymers addresses environmental pollution and/or resource depletion challenges. Herein a green bioprocess was developed to produce BC in high amounts with the rather unexplored bacterial strain Komagataeibacter rhaeticus, using waste streams such as wine distillery effluents (WDE) and biodiesel-derived glycerol.

Mediastinal tumors encompass a diverse range of malignancies, originating within or spreading to the mediastinum. The administration of radiotherapy within the anatomical confines of the mediastinum presents unique challenges owing to the close proximity of critical organs, including the heart, lungs, esophagus, and spinal cord. However, recent progress in imaging techniques, treatment modalities, and our understanding of tumor biology has significantly contributed to the development of effective and safe therapeutic strategies for mediastinal diseases.

Background: We previously showed that machine learning-based methodologies of optimal classification trees (OCTs) can accurately predict risk after congenital heart surgery and assess case-mix-adjusted performance after benchmark procedures. We extend this methodology to provide interpretable, easily accessible, and actionable hospital performance analysis across all procedures.

Methods: The European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association Congenital Cardiac Database data subset of 172,888 congenital cardiac surgical procedures performed in European centers between 1989 and 2022 was analyzed.

The European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA) Congenital Database (CD) is the second largest clinical pediatric and congenital cardiac surgical database in the world and the largest in Europe, where various smaller national or regional databases exist. Despite the dramatic increase in interventional cardiology procedures over recent years, only scattered national or regional databases of such procedures exist in Europe. Most importantly, no congenital cardiac database exists in the world that seamlessly combines both surgical and interventional cardiology data on an international level; therefore, the outcomes of surgical and interventional procedures performed on the same or similar patients cannot easily be tracked, assessed, and analyzed.

The phenomenon of Rayleigh wave attenuation due to surface roughness has been well studied theoretically in the literature. Three scattering regimes describing it have been identified-the Rayleigh (long wavelength), stochastic (medium wavelength), and geometric (short wavelength)-with the attenuation coefficient exhibiting a different behavior in each. Here, in an extension to our previous work, we gain further insight with regard to the existing theory, in three dimensions, using finite element (FE) modeling, under a unified approach, where the same FE modeling techniques are used regardless of the scattering regime.

The phenomenon of the reduction in the propagation speed of an ultrasonic wave when it travels through a fatigue zone has been well studied in the literature. Additionally, it has been established that shear waves are more severely affected by the presence of such a zone, compared with longitudinal waves. Our study utilises these phenomena to develop a method able to characterise the fatigue state of steel pipes.

We have previously shown that the machine learning methodology of optimal classification trees (OCTs) can accurately predict risk after congenital heart surgery (CHS). We have now applied this methodology to define benchmarking standards after CHS, permitting case-adjusted hospital-specific performance evaluation. The European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association Congenital Database data subset (31 792 patients) who had undergone any of the 10 "benchmark procedure group" primary procedures were analyzed.

Rayleigh waves are well known to attenuate due to scattering when they propagate over a rough surface. Theoretical investigations have derived analytical expressions linking the attenuation coefficient to statistical surface roughness parameters, namely, the surface's root mean squared height and correlation length and the Rayleigh wave's wavenumber. In the literature, three scattering regimes have been identified-the geometric (short wavelength), stochastic (short to medium wavelength), and Rayleigh (long wavelength) regimes.

Objective: Risk assessment tools typically used in congenital heart surgery (CHS) assume that various possible risk factors interact in a linear and additive fashion, an assumption that may not reflect reality. Using artificial intelligence techniques, we sought to develop nonlinear models for predicting outcomes in CHS.

Methods: We built machine learning (ML) models to predict mortality, postoperative mechanical ventilatory support time (MVST), and hospital length of stay (LOS) for patients who underwent CHS, based on data of more than 235,000 patients and 295,000 operations provided by the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association Congenital Database.

Immunoassay techniques are commonly used for urine drug screening in forensic and clinical toxicology laboratories. While these techniques are excellent for the nonspecific detection of a wide variety of drug classes, their very nature renders them vulnerable to false negatives and false positives. The New York State Police Forensic Toxicology Laboratory investigated a trend of false-positive fentanyl urine drug screens and determined that urine methamphetamine levels greater than 40 μg/mL can cause a false-positive urine fentanyl screening result using the Neogen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit at a 1 ng/mL fentanyl decision point.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic currently gripping the globe is impacting the entire health care system with rapidly escalating morbidities and mortality. Although the infectious risk to the pediatric population appears low, the effects on children with congenital heart disease (CHD) remain poorly understood. The closure of congenital heart surgery programs worldwide to address the growing number of infected individuals could have an unintended impact on future health for COVID-19-negative patients with CHD.
