Background: Hip displacement (HD) and dislocation in severe Cerebral Palsy (CP) (GMFCS III, IV, V) are important causes of worsening disability and quality of life. Prevention must be started from the first months of life through screening programs and early treatments, both conservative and surgical. Evidence from Clinical Practice Guidelines also suggests the development of Care Pathways for good clinical practice.

In humans, () is a zoonotic infection usually involving immunocompromised subjects, only rarely affecting immunocompetent subjects. Herein, we describe an infection in a 50-year-old Russian man with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) who presented with pulmonary cavitary lesions and clinical manifestation of colonic malakoplakia. A colonoscopy examination showed ulceration and mucosal erosion, and the histological findings confirmed the colonic malakoplakia.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by a proliferation of histiocytic cells resembling dendritic Langerhans cells. LCH can be unifocal or multifocal, with one- or many-organ involvement. The serous fluids are rarely involved.

Introduction: The growing number of older people and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases highlight the need for the integration between social and health services. To ensure high quality home care, common and consistent standards are essential. Our aim is to develop a validated accreditation tool for home care.

Clotiapine is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for the management of a series of acute psychotic disorders. The current literature lacks evidence concerning the tolerability and clinical use of this drug in the management of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). In this study, we report two cases of adolescents with AN, treated with clotiapine.

Pituitary carcinomas (PCa) are extremely rare, indistinguishable from pituitary adenomas on histopathological grounds and have a poor prognosis. Most PCa start as PRL or ACTH secreting tumors in males, with relapsing invasive behaviour, refractoriness to medical and radiotherapy and increasing hormonal levels. The presence of distant metastases is still required for the diagnosis of PCa.

Background: The present retrospective case-control study is aimed at evaluating the presence of childhood traumatic factors and the difficulty in regulating emotions, within a sample of patients with eating disorders compared to the group of healthy controls.

Subjects And Methods: We included 65 people assessed for eating disorders, 40 patients and 25 healthy controls, who were given two tests: the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) to investigate the presence of traumatic events and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) to assess the emotional regulation.

Results: People with eating disorders showed higher average scores, and therefore greater severity than the control group, in all the domains explored, both considering traumatic experiences and emotional dysregulation.

Background: hemorrhagic transformation is a threatening ischemic stroke complication. Frequency of hemorrhagic transformation differs greatly among studies, and its risk factors have been usually studied in patients with anterior ischemic stroke who received thrombolytic therapy. We evaluated, in a hospital-based series of patients with posterior ischemic stroke not treated with thrombolysis, frequency and risk factors of hemorrhagic transformation.

Diabetes is a well-known risk factor for invasive mucormycosis with rhinocerebral involvement. Acute necrosis of the maxilla is seldom seen and extensive facial bone involvement is rare in patients with rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis. An aggressive surgical approach combined with antifungal therapy is usually necessary.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the functional roles of specific peptide regions in the serine protease urokinase (uPA), revealing that its connecting peptide (CP) has both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell migration.
  • - Two synthetic peptides from the CP region, uPA-(135-143) and uPA-(144-158), were tested, with uPA-(144-158) promoting chemotaxis while uPA-(135-143) inhibiting cell movement, suggesting opposing functions.
  • - The findings indicate that these peptide segments compete for binding to cell surfaces but activate different signaling pathways, highlighting hidden activities within protein domains that could inform future research on uPA's role in cell migration.

Background: It is well-known that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can affect the central nervous system (CNS).

Case Presentation: Herein the authors report unusual timely Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain scan findings in an immunocompetent patient with EBV encephalitis. Diffusion weighted MRI sequence performed during the acute phase of the disease was normal, whereas the Fast Relaxation Fast Spin Echo T2 image showed diffuse signal intensity changes in white matter.

Background: Frequency and associated risk factors for hemorrhagic transformation (HT), a worrying complication of ischemic stroke (IS), are not clearly defined. Our aim was to estimate the overall frequency and risk factors for HT in a hospital-based population.

Methods: A retrospective review of medical records of patients discharged from our department during the period 2004-2006 with a diagnosis of anterior IS.

Mutations in the RYR1 gene are linked to malignant hyperthermia (MH), central core disease and multi-minicore disease. We screened by DHPLC the RYR1 gene in 24 subjects for mutations, and characterized functional alterations caused by some RYR1 variants. Three novel sequence variants and twenty novel polymorphisms were identified.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare computed tomography angiography (CTA) sliding-thin-slab (STS) multiplanar reformatting (MPR), STS maximum intensity projection (MIP) and three-dimensional (3D) volume rendering (VR) reformatting techniques in the evaluation of cervicocranial arteries.

Materials And Methods: Twenty patients examined with multislice CT were included in this study. CTA images were reformatted as STS-MIP, STS-MPR and 3DVR in orthogonal planes and in the oblique-coronal plane.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) plays a central role in the development of cervical cancer. However, other coexisting factors, such as HIV infection, must be present for this to occur. We evaluated the prevalence of HPV in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and determined the most prevalent types of HPV in these patients.

Purpose: To assess the prognostic value of hyperattenuating middle cerebral artery sign at CT in acute cerebral infarction.

Materials And Methods: Ninety-two patients with acute cerebral infarction in the sylvian area were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent unenhanced CT 12-24 hours after the onset of symptoms and follow-up CT within 48-72 hours.

We identified four novel polymorphisms in the CACNA1S gene that encodes the alpha1-subunit of the dihydropyridine receptor. Mutations in this gene are associated with two genetic diseases: malignant hyperthermia and hypokalemic periodic paralysis. The nucleotide substitutions c2403T --> C and c5398T --> C did not result in amino acid replacement, the nucleotide substitution c4475C --> A caused the replacement of the Ala1492 with an Asp residue and an A insertion was identified in intron 36.

Purpose: We investigated the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of neurotoxoplasmosis and in the evaluation of drug treatment response.

Material And Methods: Twenty-six AIDS patients (22 men and 4 women, mean age 26.7 years) with clinical suspicion of neurotoxoplasmosis were examined.
