Problem: Childbirth on traditional territories is unattainable for many Indigenous peoples living in remote communities in Canada.

Integrating knowledge systems for holistic approaches to addressing knowledge and health inequities: combining fuzzy cognitive maps.

This paper describes fuzzy cognitive mapping as an accessible and robust tool to strengthen community engagement in health promotion research. We outline how fuzzy cognitive mapping can combine, compare, and contextualize knowledge and priorities from diverse population groups as well as from evidence syntheses. We present procedures to represent a shared perspective across populations or population groups through reconciling maps by simple or weighted averaging.

Background: Fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) is a graphic technique to describe causal understanding in a wide range of applications. This practice review summarises the experience of a group of participatory research specialists and trainees who used FCM to include stakeholder views in addressing health challenges. From a meeting of the research group, this practice review reports 25 experiences with FCM in nine countries between 2016 and 2023.

Introduction: As the number of people living in cities increases worldwide, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), urban health is a growing priority of public and global health. Rapid unplanned urbanisation in LMICs has exacerbated inequalities, putting the urban poor at increased risk of ill health due to difficult living conditions in cities. Collaboration with communities in research is a key strategy for addressing the challenges they face.

Giving birth in a good way when it must take place away from home: Participatory research into visions of Inuit families and their Montreal-based medical providers.

Background: Transferring pregnant women out of their communities for childbirth continues to affect Inuit women living in Nunavik-Inuit territory in Northern Quebec. With estimates of maternal evacuation rates in the region between 14% and 33%, we examine how to support culturally safe birth for Inuit families when birth must take place away from home.

Methods: A participatory research approach explored perceptions of Inuit families and their perinatal healthcare providers in Montreal for culturally safe birth, or "birth in a good way" in the context of evacuation, using fuzzy cognitive mapping.

Artificial intelligence in public health: the potential of epidemic early warning systems.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate automated early warnings in epidemic surveillance by harnessing vast open-source data with minimal human intervention has the potential to be both revolutionary and highly sustainable. AI can overcome the challenges faced by weak health systems by detecting epidemic signals much earlier than traditional surveillance. AI-based digital surveillance is an adjunct to-not a replacement of-traditional surveillance and can trigger early investigation, diagnostics and responses at the regional level.

Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass: An Evolving Paradigm Over the Past 25 Years.

Objective: We have routinely utilized minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) for revascularization of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. We examined how this procedure has evolved.

Methods: A retrospective review was undertaken of 2,283 consecutive patients who underwent MIDCAB between 1997 and 2021.

Traditional Midwifery Contribution to Safe Birth in Cultural Safety: Narrative Evaluation of an Intervention in Guerrero, Mexico.

A 2017 randomised controlled trial in Guerrero State, Mexico, showed supporting Indigenous traditional midwives on their own terms improved traditional childbirths without inferior maternal health outcomes. This narrative evaluation complements the trial to document participant experience of safer birth in cultural safety, transformative dynamics and implementation issues of the intervention. Stories came from 26 traditional midwives, 28 apprentices, 12 intercultural brokers and 20 Indigenous women who experienced the intervention.

For many years, physicians' approach to the transfusion of allogeneic red blood cells (RBC) was not individualized. It was accepted that a hemoglobin concentration (Hb) of less than 10 g/dL was a general transfusion threshold and the majority of patients were transfused immediately. In recent years, there has been increasing evidence that even significantly lower hemoglobin concentrations can be survived in the short term without sequelae.

Factors and Priorities Influencing Satisfaction with Care among Women Living with HIV in Canada: A Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping Study.

Engagement along the HIV care cascade in Canada is lower among women compared to men. We used Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM), a participatory research method, to identify factors influencing satisfaction with HIV care, their causal pathways, and relative importance from the perspective of women living with HIV. Building from a map of factors derived from a mixed-studies review of the literature, 23 women living with HIV in Canada elaborated ten categories influencing their satisfaction with HIV care.

Viscoelastic Testing and Factor Concentrate Therapy to Reduce Bleeding and Transfusions in the Surgical Separation of Ischiophagus Twins: A Case Report.

The surgical procedure to separate conjoined twins represents a rare and major challenge. One of the most feared perioperative scenarios is the presence of coagulopathy secondary to bleeding. We present a case of the surgical separation of ischiopagus tetrapus twins using a patient blood management strategy encompassing a tranexamic acid infusion, intraoperative viscoelastic testing, and early fibrinogen supplementation to reduce bleeding and transfusions.

Robotic-assisted closed-chest management of a fungal-infected prosthetic aortic graft: a case report.

Background: Fungal prosthetic graft infections are associated with high mortality, typically requiring aggressive surgical debridement. We present an alternative, minimally invasive approach to address these challenging clinical cases.
