Annual health expenditures by body mass index categories and the economic impact of obesity in Türkiye: A retrospective modeling study.

Introduction: Obesity is considered not only a public health issue on a global scale but also a disease adversely affecting the world economies. Economic impact of overweight and obesity has not yet been investigated in Türkiye at a national level. This study aimed to investigate the impact of obesity on the healthcare costs in Türkiye and to estimate the overall national economic burden of obesity.

The effect of eating motivation on adherence to the Mediterranean diet, glycemia and lipid profile in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eating motivation on Mediterranean diet adherence, glycemia and lipid profile in individuals with type 2 diabetes. A questionnaire consisting of general information, eating motivation scale and Mediterranean diet adherence scale was applied to 400 individuals with diabetes. Height, weight, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein values were measured.

Acquired antithrombin deficiency in adult patients with postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between acquired antithrombin deficiency in patients undergoing postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (PC-ECMO) and thromboembolic or haemorrhagic events such as bleeding, peripheral arterial thromboembolism, and ischemic cerebrovascular events.

Methods: The study was designed as a single-center, prospective study and conducted at our hospital between November 2019 and June 2021. 50 patients who underwent ECMO due to postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock were included in the study.

Purpose: One of the key functions of brown adipose tissue is its positive impact on metabolism. This study aimed to examine the potential involvement of brown fat-related hormones in the development of metabolically healthy obesity. Specifically, we sought to compare the levels of NRG4, FGF21, and irisin between metabolically healthy and unhealthy individuals with obesity.

How does circadian rhythm affect postoperative pain after pediatric acute appendicitis surgery?

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between postoperative pain and circadian rhythm after pediatric acute appendicitis surgery.

Methods: Two hundred patients, aged 6-18 years, undergoing acute appendicitis surgery were included in this prospective observational study. The patients were divided into four groups according to the time they underwent surgery: the night group, 01:01-07:00; morning group, 07:01-13:00; afternoon group, 13:01-19:00; and evening group, 19:01-01:00.

Quality of recovery (QoR) is a significant component of peri-operative health status and is influenced by patients' characteristics and surgical and anesthetic methods. The QoR-15 scale is a patient-reported outcome questionnaire that measures postoperative QoR. The validity of the QoR-15 scale has been proven in many languages.

Expert Opinion on the Utility of Telemedicine in Obesity Care: Recommendations on a Hybrid Multidisciplinary Integrated Care Follow-Up Algorithm.

Purpose Of Review: The proposed expert opinion was prepared by a panel of obesity and law specialists from Turkey to review the utility of telemedicine in obesity care and to provide a guidance document with recommendations on a hybrid multidisciplinary integrated care follow-up algorithm and the legislation governing telemedicine practice to assist obesity specialists in practicing the telemedicine.

Recent Findings: The efficacy and feasibility of telemedicine interventions in supporting obesity management programs even during pandemics confirm that obesity is a particularly well-suited field for telemedicine, emphasizing the strong likelihood of continued utilization of telemedicine in obesity management, beyond the pandemic period. Telemedicine has great potential to address several barriers to ongoing weight-management care, such as challenges of access to specialized care, cost, and time limitations as well as patient adherence to treatment.

The effect of lyophilized dried cornelian cherry ( L.) intake on anthropometric and biochemical parameters in women with insulin resistance: A randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect on the anthropometric and biochemical parameters for women with insulin resistance when lyophilized dried cornelian cherry ( L., CM) was added to medical nutrition therapy (MNT). The study was conducted with 84 women aged 18-45, who had been diagnosed with insulin resistance.

Can subclavian/infraclavicular axillary vein collapsibility index predict spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension in cesarean-section operations?

Objective: Spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension (SAIH) is relatively common in pregnant women and has serious maternal and fetal side effects. In patients who are hypovolemic during spinal anesthesia, there may be a significant decrease in blood pressure caused by the decrease in preload. Subclavian vein sonography is a useful method for evaluating preoperative intravascular volume status.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is a component of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome and it increases in the presence of chronic inflammation. Lately, "neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio" (NLR) has been used as an indicator of inflammation. This study evaluates the association between IR and NLR in obese women.

The comparison of ultrasound-guided ilioinguinal/iliohypogastric nerve block and pre-incision wound infiltration for pediatric inguinal hernia repair: A prospective randomized clinical study.

Objectives: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common daily surgeries performed in pediatrics. This prospective randomized clinical trial aims to compare ultrasound (USG)-guided ilioinguinal/iliohypogastric (IL/IH) nerve block and pre-incisional wound infiltration (PWI) in terms of post-operative analgesia on pediatric unilateral inguinal hernia repair.

Methods: After receiving ethics committee approval, 65 children aged 1-6 years who had unilateral inguinal hernia repair were allocated to USG-guided IL/IH nerve block (group IL/IH, n=32) and (group PWI, n=33).

Background: The use of a venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the postcardiotomy shock setting (PC-ECMO) can be life-saving. Risk stratification for patients under PC-ECMO is currently challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the discriminatory ability of the different available risk scores for mortality in PC-ECMO patients.

Effect of Obesity on the Recovery Profile After General Anesthesia in Children: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Participants: 40 children (aged 2-12 years) who underwent surgery under general anesthesia and had an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical I and II.

Use of ultrasonography in confirming the malposition of the i-gel in pediatric patients: a prospective observational study.

Background: This study was designed to observe and compare the performance of fiberoptic laryngeal (FOL) view, leakage test (LT) and ultrasonography (USG) usage in detecting i-gel position in pediatric patients.

Methods: One hundred ten consecutive children were included in this single-armed prospective observational study. After anesthetic induction, i-gel placement confirmed using FOL and LT was evaluated using USG in three planes.

Objectives: Although ganglion impar blockade has long been an effective procedure in the treatment of coccydynia, the pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) of the ganglion impar (GI) is a relatively new approach for the management of coccydynia. This state results in increased mortality and morbidity following cardiac surgery. A better understanding of the associated risk factors will guide the surgical team in patient management.
