Article Synopsis
  • Minoxidil is commonly used off-label for treating hair loss but may increase the risk of pericardial effusions, even at low doses.
  • A study compared 51 patients on low-dose oral minoxidil with 49 control patients for the presence of these effusions, using ultrasound to evaluate results.
  • The findings revealed no significant difference in the prevalence of small pericardial effusions between the two groups, suggesting LDOM is not linked to increased risk in this small cohort of alopecia patients.

Introduction: Both Orthopedic Surgery (OS) and Neurosurgery (NS) perform spine surgery in the setting of trauma. However, it is unknown whether outcomes differ between these specialties. This study compares management and outcomes for vertebral fractures between NS and OS, hypothesizing similar operation rate, length of stay (LOS), and readmission.

Introduction: Past research has demonstrated a "reopening phenomenon" of increased firearm violence associated with the initial lifting of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic-related restrictions after the first wave. Now, with widespread societal reemergence from stay-at-home measures, we hypothesize another spike in firearm violence in the United States (US). Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the trends in firearm violence before and after extensive community reopenings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: Intrathoracic surgical stabilization of rib fractures allows for a novel approach to rib fracture repair. This approach can help minimize muscle disruption, which may improve patient recovery compared with traditional extrathoracic plating. We hypothesized patients undergoing intrathoracic plating (ITP) to have a shorter length of stay (LOS) and intensive care unit (ICU) LOS compared with extrathoracic plating (ETP).

Background: Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is being done with increased frequency and new advances. Intrathoracic SSRF is a new less invasive approach compared to the traditional extrathoracic plating procedure. Educational assessment can be done through descriptive analysis of learning curves with operation time used as a proxy measurement for learning.

Article Synopsis
  • A 70-year-old woman developed a painful, enlarging nodule on her forearm, which was found to be a subcutaneous mass after surgical excision.
  • The pathology revealed that it was an intravenous lobular capillary hemangioma (IVLCH), a rare benign tumor that typically causes discomfort but can be cured with excision.
  • The authors propose a new acronym for identifying various cause of tender skin tumors, emphasizing the need for ongoing updates in this classification to assist medical professionals in their diagnoses.*
