With more than 150 recognized breeds, donkeys assume relevant economic importance, especially in developing countries. Even if the estimated number of heads worldwide is 53M, this species received less attention than other livestock species. Italy has traditionally been considered one of the cradles of European donkey breeding, and despite a considerable loss of biodiversity, today still counts nine autochthonous populations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to create a new type of cheese, called "Ewiss cheese" (EC), using sheep milk while employing traditional Swiss cheese technology, producing two variations with raw milk (RM) and pasteurized milk (PM).
  • - Microbiological analyses showed no significant differences in lactic acid bacteria between the RM-EC and PM-EC, with both types having mainly mesophilic LAB cocci initially, but shifting to LAB rods after 9 months of ripening.
  • - The resulting cheeses had different textural properties and compositions—RM-EC had higher protein and lactic acid content, while PM-EC had more propionic acid, and both emitted 46 diverse volatile compounds.

Differential somatic cell count (DSCC), the percentage of somatic cell count (SCC) due to polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and lymphocytes (LYMs), is a promising effective diagnostic marker for dairy animals with infected mammary glands. Well-explored in dairy cows, DSCC is also potentially valid in sheep, where clinical and subclinical mastitis outbreaks are among the principal causes of culling. We pioneered the application of DSCC in dairy ewes by applying receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to define the most accurate thresholds to facilitate early discrimination of sheep with potential intramammary infection (IMI) from healthy animals.

About three decades of breeding and selection in the Valle del Belìce sheep are expected to have left several genomic footprints related to milk production traits. In this study, we have assembled a dataset with 451 individuals of the Valle del Belìce sheep breed: 184 animals that underwent directional selection for milk production and 267 unselected animals, genotyped for 40,660 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Three different statistical approaches, both within (iHS and ROH) and between (Rsb) groups, were used to identify genomic regions potentially under selection.

Aim: The effect of liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E has been evaluated on the aggregation features of different amyloidogenic proteins: human Amyloid β1-40 (Aβ), transthyretin (TTR) variant S52P, human β2microglobulin (β2m) variants ΔN6 and D76N, Serum Amyloid A (SAA).

Methods: The formation of fibrillar aggregates of the proteins was investigated by ThioflavinT fluorescence assay and validated by Atomic Force Microscopy.

Results: The results show that liposomes are preventing the transition of non-aggregated forms to the fibrillar state, with stronger effects on Aβ, β2m ΔN6 and SAA.

Italy counts a large number of local chicken populations, some without a recognized genetic structure, such as Val Platani (VPL) and Cornuta (COS), which represent noteworthy local genetic resources. In this study, the genotype data of 34 COS and 42 VPL, obtained with the Affymetrix Axiom600KChicken Genotyping Array, were used with the aim to investigate the genetic diversity, the runs of homozygosity (ROH) pattern, as well as the population structure and relationship within the framework of other local Italian and commercial chickens. The genetic diversity indices, estimated using different approaches, displayed moderate levels of genetic diversity in both populations.

In the Mediterranean basin countries, the dairy sheep production is usually based on local breeds, which are very well-adapted to their production systems and environments and can indeed guarantee income, employment, and economic viability in areas where production alternatives are scarce or non-existent. Mastitis is still one of the greatest problems affecting commercial milk production. However, genetic evaluation of mastitis is particularly difficult because of its low heritability and the categorical nature of the trait.
