In tropical forests, several studies have explored the effects of environmental factors and tree species diversity as well as functional trait diversity and trait composition on aboveground biomass (AGB) stock. However, these abiotic and biotic effects on individual biomass variability (BioVar) are still largely unexplored, which limits our understanding of the plant-plant interactions for species coexistence. Here, we used the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Models (PLS-SEMs), and other complementary analyses, on data from 189 tropical forest plots in Sri Lanka, to test the linkages amongst climate (a latent variable of solar radiation and potential evapotranspiration), soil (pH and cation exchange capacity), plot (plot size and stand density) conditions, big-sized trees, species-functional diversity, and BioVar.
