Background: Chronic low-grade inflammation in obesity is linked to white adipose tissue (WAT) dysfunction. Plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) activates Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), triggering NF-κB and worsening these disturbances. Previously, we showed that histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27) epigenetic modifications affect WAT gene expression in high-fat-diet mice, identifying key pathways in adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs).

Background: Many public health topics in the subject of Community Medicine have a psycho sociocultural aspect to them, and these are taught by traditional methods like didactic lectures with little or no interaction of faculty and students. This limits the comprehensive understanding of the students regarding sensitive issues. There is a felt need to improve the knowledge and understanding of many of these competencies among students through available cinema movies addressing these concepts.

Using Risk Assessment to Improve Screening for Albuminuria among US Adults without Diabetes.

Background: Guidelines currently recommend annual screening for albuminuria only among persons with diabetes mellitus (DM). There is no guidance about albuminuria screening in those with other important risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD), such as hypertension and/or family history of kidney disease. We sought to create a risk score that predicts the likelihood of albuminuria in adults without diabetes to prompt earlier detection and management of CKD.

Background: Isoxazolines inhibit γ-aminobutyric acid chloride channels in insects and acarids by binding to postsynaptic receptors. This prevents chloride influx, leading to depolarization/hyperexcitation, paralysis, and death. Here, we evaluated the potential utility of a novel isoxazoline, isocycloseram, against several urban insect pests.

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and a leading cause of cardiorenal disease and mortality. Only one-third of individuals with T2D receive care as recommended by the American Diabetes Association's clinical practice guidelines. Effective strategies are needed to accelerate the implementation of guideline concordant T2D care.

Among rising environmental concerns, emerging contaminants constitute a variety of different chemicals and biological agents. The composition, residence time in environmental media, chemical interactions, and toxicity of emerging contaminants are not fully known, and hence, their regulation becomes problematic. Some of the important groups of emerging contaminants are pesticides and pesticide transformation products (PTPs), which present a considerable obstacle to maintaining and preserving ecosystem health.

Assessing trends and variability in outpatient dual testing for chronic kidney disease with urine albumin and serum creatinine, 2009-2018: a retrospective cohort study in the Veterans Health Administration System.

Background: Simultaneous urine testing for albumin (UAlb) and serum creatinine (SCr), that is, 'dual testing,' is an accepted quality measure in the management of diabetes. As chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined by both UAlb and SCr testing, this approach could be more widely adopted in kidney care.

Objective: We assessed time trends and facility-level variation in the performance of outpatient dual testing in the integrated Veterans Health Administration (VHA) system.

Study of biomarkers p53, Ki-67, Bcl-2, and VEGF in pterygium.

Purpose: To study the biomarkers present in primary pterygium samples of patients of Indian ethnicity and compare it with the samples obtained from the unaffected conjunctiva of the same eye.

Methods: A prospective case-control study of 17 eyes in patients above 10 years of age with primary pterygium who underwent pterygium excision using limbal conjunctival autograft technique. The pterygium samples (cases) and conjunctival samples (controls) were sent for immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for the following biomarkers: p53, Bcl-2, Ki-67, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

Magnetic resonance imaging in paediatric ocular and orbital lesions: A pictorial review.

Paediatric orbital lesions encompass a wide spectrum of benign and malignant entities that can arise from different components of the orbit. Clinical symptoms and signs are often nonspecific, and imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management. Ultrasonography has a limited role and radiation is a major concern with CT especially in the paediatric population.

Accurate diagnosis of Epithelioid glioblastoma (eGB) and pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is sometimes challenging owing to overlapping histologic and genetic features. There are limited reports on the immune profile of these tumors. In this study, we assessed 21 PXA [15 PXA Grade 2 (PXAG2); 6 PXA Grade 3 (PXAG3)] and 14 eGB for their histopathological and molecular association.

Generalizability of an acute kidney injury prediction model across health systems.

Delays in the identification of acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized patients are a major barrier to the development of effective interventions to treat AKI. A recent study by Tomasev and colleagues at DeepMind described a model that achieved a state-of-the-art performance in predicting AKI up to 48 hours in advance. Because this model was trained in a population of US Veterans that was 94% male, questions have arisen about its reproducibility and generalizability.

Recurrence of gigantic overhanging bleb post excision: a case report.

Purpose: To report the case of an extremely large overhanging bleb, extending from superior fornix to limbus, in a 57-year-old poorly controlled diabetic, six years after trabeculectomy for an uncontrolled primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) with recurrence, months after complete excision.

Methods: An overhanging bleb is defined as a filtering cicatrix which has been massaged downward over the cornea by eyelid action. It has been linked to anti-metabolite use during glaucoma filtering surgery.

In recent years, the application of lasers for modifying the surface topography of dental biomaterials has received increased attention. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the current status on the utilization of lasers as a potential tool for surface modification of dental biomaterials such as implants, ceramics, and other materials used for restorative purposes. A literature search was done for articles related to the use of lasers for surface modification of dental biomaterials in English language published between October 2000 and March 2023 in Scopus, Pubmed and web of science, and relevant articles were reviewed.

A Study of the Degree of Gall Bladder Wall Thickness and Its Impact on Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Background The gold standard management for symptomatic gallstone disease is elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which has replaced open cholecystectomy. The wall thickness of the gallbladder is an indicator of cholecystitis in patients who have presented with symptoms of gallstone disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate preoperative gall bladder wall thickness by ultrasonography and assess its impact on the outcome of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, including conversion rate, complications, operative time, and postoperative hospital stay.

Geographic and Temporal Trends in COVID-Associated Acute Kidney Injury in the National COVID Cohort Collaborative.

Background: AKI is associated with mortality in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, its incidence, geographic distribution, and temporal trends since the start of the pandemic are understudied.

Methods: Electronic health record data were obtained from 53 health systems in the United States in the National COVID Cohort Collaborative. We selected hospitalized adults diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 6, 2020, and January 6, 2022.

Enhancing the Cardiovascular Safety of Hemodialysis Care Using Multimodal Provider Education and Patient Activation Interventions: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation, with most patients with ESKD receiving in-center hemodialysis treatment. This life-saving treatment can result in cardiovascular and hemodynamic instability, with the most common form being low blood pressure during the dialysis treatment (intradialytic hypotension [IDH]). IDH is a complication of hemodialysis that can involve symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, cramping, and loss of consciousness.

Anastrozole-mediated modulation of mitochondrial activity by inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening: an initial perspective.

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mtPTP) plays a vital role in altering the structure and function of mitochondria. Cyclophilin D (CypD) is a mitochondrial protein that regulates mtPTP function and a known drug target for therapeutic studies involving mitochondria. While the effect of aromatase inhibition on the mtPTP has been studied previously, the effect of anastrozole on the mtPTP has not been completely elucidated.
