Therefore, it is difficult to predict the course of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC), with some men remaining on first-line androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for several years while others progress more rapidly. Improving our ability to risk-stratify patients would allow for the optimization of systemic therapies and support the development of stratified prospective clinical trials focused on patients likely to have the greatest potential benefit.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Elevated pre-treatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may reflect immune dysfunction and is negatively prognostic in cancer patients treated with immunotherapy, but it is unclear if NLR is predictive of immunotherapy benefit.
Methods: We identified stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with definitive chemoradiation and adjuvant durvalumab within the national Veterans Affairs system from 2017 to 2021. We compared the prognostic value of NLR measured before durvalumab start to a control group of stage III NSCLC patients treated with definitive chemoradiation alone from 2015 to 2016 (no-durvalumab group) before the approval of adjuvant durvalumab.

Management of leukostasis requires time-sensitive diagnostics and therapeutics, and leukapheresis remains a mainstay of treatment in select patients. Leukapheresis requires coordination of multi-disciplinary resources, which can prove challenging in the emergency department setting, and delays in treatment due to the complexity and coordination required are common.

Methods: Consecutive non-trial mCRPC patients who received ≥1 dose of radium dichloride-223 at four academic and one community urology-specific cancer centers from May 2013 to June 2014 were retrospectively identified. Association of baseline and on-therapy clinical variables with number of radium doses received and clinical outcomes including overall survival were analyzed using chi-square statistics, cox proportional hazards, and Kaplan-Meier methods.

Bevacizumab is an effective targeted therapy with demonstrated survival benefits for many patients with advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Some patient populations are at higher risk for bleeding complications and bevacizumab should be avoided, but advanced age should not be used as the sole exclusion criterion for use. Bevacizumab is generally a well-tolerated therapy that can be safely given in combination with multiple chemotherapy agents in the induction and maintenance phases of therapy.

In the past 30 years, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma (ACA) has increased significantly. Sadly, advances in treatment have not followed the same trend, and the prognosis for patients with esophageal ACA remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate of only 15%. Like most cancers, early detection is the key to improving prognosis, but this outcome has proven difficult in the esophagus for several reasons: 1) patients present with advanced disease because "alarm symptoms," such as dysphagia, occur at a late stage, and 2) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) and early ACA are not visible on routine surveillance endoscopy.
