We present nonequilibrium physics in spin ice as a unique setting that combines kinematic constraints, emergent topological defects, and magnetic long-range Coulomb interactions. In spin ice, magnetic frustration leads to highly degenerate yet locally constrained ground states. Together, they form a highly unusual magnetic state--a "Coulomb phase"--whose excitations are point-like defects--magnetic monopoles--in the absence of which effectively no dynamics is possible.

Compressed sensing is a processing method that significantly reduces the number of measurements needed to accurately resolve signals in many fields of science and engineering. We develop a two-dimensional variant of compressed sensing for multidimensional spectroscopy and apply it to experimental data. For the model system of atomic rubidium vapor, we find that compressed sensing provides an order-of-magnitude (about 10-fold) improvement in spectral resolution along each dimension, as compared to a conventional discrete Fourier transform, using the same data set.

We propose a physical setup that can be used to simulate the quantum dynamics of the Ising model in a transverse field. Building on currently available technology, our scheme consists of electrons which float on a superfluid helium film covering a suitable substrate and interact via Coulomb forces. At low temperatures, the system will stay near its ground state where its Hamiltonian is equivalent to the Ising model and thus shows phenomena such as quantum criticality.
