Analysis of alternate material Onyx™ for total knee arthroplasty instrumentation sets.

Context: A 25-pound weight limit is currently set on containerized instrumentation sets by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), in order to reduce strain on the staff and ensure that the sets are not too crowded in order to preserve sterilization and drying of the instruments. This is pushing companies to reduce the weight and number of instrumentation sets for the operating room. One solution has been to explore the viability of new, lighter materials such as Onyx.

Retrospective analysis of robotic unicompartmental and total knee arthroplasties: patient demographics and outcomes.

Context: With the growing number of robotic knee arthroplasties being performed, new outcomes must be analyzed to provide a database for comparing robotic and nonrobotic surgeries. These results can be utilized in the future to properly assess the significance of utilizing robotic technology in the operating room regarding patient outcomes and cost.

Objectives: The aims of this study are to: (1) analyze adverse outcomes from robotic-assisted knee arthroplasty and its relation to sex, body mass index (BMI), and age; and (2) explore any possible differences in outcomes among robotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

The Persistence of Sperm and the Development of Time Since Intercourse (TSI) Guidelines in Sexual Assault Cases at Forensic Science Ireland, Dublin, Ireland.

The persistence of sperm using confirmatory microscopic analysis, the persistence of sperm with tails, time since intercourse (TSI) analysis, and results from the acid phosphatase (AP) reaction from approximately 5581 swabs taken from circa 1450 sexual assault cases are presented. The observed proportions of sperm in the vagina and anus declines significantly after 48 h TSI, and sperm on oral swabs were observed up to 15 h TSI. The AP reaction as a predictor of sperm on intimate swabs is questioned.

Homicide/suspicious death statistics for cases submitted to the forensic science laboratory in the Republic of Ireland for 2004-2008.

The purpose of this study was to examine the trends and patterns of homicide in the Republic of Ireland over a five-year period (2004-2008). In total, 293 cases are covered in the survey. The majority of the victims were men.
