Continuous sensing of biomarkers, such as potassium ions or pH, in wearable patches requires miniaturization of ion-selective sensor electrodes. Such miniaturization can be achieved by using nanostructured carbon materials as solid contacts in microneedle-based ion-selective and reference electrodes. Here we compare three carbon materials as solid contacts: colloid-imprinted mesoporous (CIM) carbon microparticles with ∼24-28 nm mesopores, mesoporous carbon nanospheres with 3-9 nm mesopores, and Super P carbon black nanoparticles without internal porosity but with textural mesoporosity in particle aggregates.

Specialized microfabrication methods are required to produce flexible ECoG devices with high-density electrode arrays. However, these fabrication methods are challenging for scientists without access to cleanroom fabrication equipment.

Combining these two modalities for simultaneous large-scale, multimodal sensing of neural activity across multiple brain regions can be very powerful. Here, transparent, inkjet-printed electrode arrays with outstanding optical and electrical properties are seamlessly integrated with morphologically conformant transparent polymer skulls.

Transparent microelectrodes that facilitate simultaneous optical and electrophysiological interfacing are desirable tools for neuroscience. Electrodes made from transparent conductors such as graphene and indium tin oxide (ITO) show promise but are often limited by poor interfacial charge-transfer properties. Here, microelectrodes are demonstrated that take advantage of the transparency and volumetric capacitance of the mixed ion-electron conductor Poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS).

Photonic curing offers advantages over conventional thermal processing methods such as ultrashort processing time and compatibility with low-temperature substrates. However, previous work on photonically cured TFTs often results in significant heating of the entire substrate rather than just the thin film at the surface.

A major challenge in modeling the normal or diseased BBB is that conventional models lack either the physiological complexity of the BBB or key functional features such as formation of a sufficiently tight barrier. In this study, we utilized human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived BMECs in a BBB-on-a-chip device that supports flow and coculture with an astrocyte-laden 3D hydrogel.

Chronic skin wounds affect millions of people each year and take billions of dollars to treat. Ulcers are a type of chronic skin wound that can be especially painful for patients and are tricky to treat because current monitoring solutions are subjective. We have developed an impedance sensing tool to objectively monitor the progression of healing in ulcers, and have begun a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and feasibility of our device to map damaged regions of skin.

Colloidal nanocrystal routes to these materials are particularly interesting, because nanocrystals may be formulated with tunable surface properties into stable inks, and printed to form devices in an additive manner. We report our investigation of an In2O3 nanocrystal synthesis for high-performance solution-deposited semiconductor layers for thin-film transistors (TFTs).

Preventing pressure ulcers is challenging because the combination of pressure and time that results in tissue damage varies widely between patients, and the underlying damage is often severe by the time a surface wound becomes visible. Currently, no method exists to detect early tissue damage and enable intervention.

Representative devices show excellent performance and transparency, and deliver mobility of 103 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) in saturation at operation voltages as low as 2 V, a sub-threshold swing of only 0.3 V/decade, and /(on) //(off) of 10(4) ~10(5) .

In this highly confined regime, we find that the larger particle bandgap can lead to higher open-circuit voltages (∼0.6 V), and thus an increase in overall efficiency compared to previously reported devices of this structure.

For high performance, these applications require epitaxially matched interfaces, which are difficult to produce. Here, we present a new architecture for producing low-strain, single-crystalline heterojunctions using self-assembly and in-film cation exchange of colloidal nanorods.
